What exactly does a recovery session in the pool involve? I hear of a lot of sports teams and athletes doing it the day after they compete or even that evening.

Maybe its just a casual swim??

I find going out to a lake or river and standing in it for 10 - 20 minutes much more beneficial
I stand up to my hips or just mid quads, depending on the soreness

    water is colder
there is a body of water - so more energy behind it or a flow
    the place is always open
    it's free

So would a recovery session in the pool just consist of standing in the pool for "10-20 minutes"?

You must look pretty creepy just standing there though. Do you bring a magazine?

    Jacuzzi ftw ;)

I reckon swimming is good is because its a low impact activity. You can get blood running through your muscles and loosen them up with putting them under too much strain.

Any one ive seen usually has light jogging, some light dynamic warm up type stuff and lots of stretches in the water. If they can swim, they usually swim a bit. Google it, heaps and heaps of sample ones out there.

A couple of slow laps using whatever stroke seems to help me a bit. Not sure if that's what the teams do aswell.
