skype on mac is a joke
i have a new macbook running the latest of everything, with 16gb as well by the way:

and skype is set to run at startup, and it still manages to rake ages to load at startup and also to shut down.

i have another software called oovoo which is also terrible and hungry, ''sitting in front of the tv eating cheerio, showing its beer belly'' sloppy

mac need to only accept a certain standard of application, before allowing a reputable company like skype develop an app that runs on their machines

Is it possible you're Mac is just indexing by any chance ? I've seen those machines working and they are very very quick ! Use activity monitor to see what's running and delete everything in the Startup section. The only thing I have starting is iTunes Helper. I delete or disallow anything that tries to start at power up. The weak link in any laptop is the Hard Disk, regardless of the interface. IT's a mechanical device that needs to search across a linear track for data. If you want to see a real difference get a SSD, you'll be amazed !!

That said though, I hate the new version of Skype, looks more like the Windows version which is awful !! I got rid of it and went back to the older version.

Yeah get the old version of Skype. I don't think anyone uses the new version.

I have the new version. Works fine. Never slow.
I do prefer the old version however - but thats just for aesthetic reasons

    I use Skype version 5.7.0.1037

Extremely fast. No problems at all.

You HAVE actually installed it have you? I've come across a few people who think it's a good idea to run Skype from inside its installation disc image (it isn't).

5.7.60.1037 runs perfect on my MPro c2duo 8GB ram.

No. They got away with that on the iPhone.
