Can anyone recommend a good hd satellite receiver box that's priced in or around €100.

Going to cancel subscription service as I only ever use the basic channels an I use Netflix alot. It's brilliant for the kids shows.

    Any ideas appreciated!

    Thanks

Have a look at the Ariva 120 HD Combo, there's a huge thread on it.

Or the amiko 8820, using it at the moment without issues had 3 arivas broken, as have others according to that thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 381 ✭✭tunner

Are all of the above best bought from that polish website or are there any other recommended sites?

Is the Ferguson FK 8500 HD any good? It's on sale on that polish site.

The issues with the Ariva have been resolved.

Polish sites are cheapest but if it breaks then it's more difficult to get replacements.

For the sake of a few extra euro, you are better off dealing with a local supplier. 48 hour delivery and better support if the worst happens.

dont think the mheg 5 text is working on the Triax, which makes it only as good as a normal combi receiver?

Works grand on Saorview but not on Saorsat. As 99% of folks would be using it for saorview, that's grand. Doubt many folks would buy a combo if they wanted saorsat anyway.

I thought the 114 was the ONLY Saorsat approved box. Does MHEG5 not work properly becuase it is not being sent or that it can't handle it via sat? How can it be approved if it does not work properly? Can you mention this on the Saorsat thread to discuss?

Saorview approved, not Saorsat. Might that have something to do with it?

Off topic. It is approved, refer to Saorsat thread.

That's what I was looking for! Where is the cheapest place to buy one? See it for €150. I assume it is the most stable and that's why it's that price. Was not looking to spend that much but I it's the best ......

It's that price because it's the ONLY Saorview approved Combo. Others are due to be approved relatively soon.

There is a whole thread on it here if you have questions:

Indeed, the relevant legislation is very clear on what should be displayed

"the price so stated shall be stated as a single amount inclusive of any charge made by the person for any tax payable "

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1973/en/si/0009.html

Its interesting that the vat inclusive amount is less prominent than the exclusive price shown.

Is there legislation that specifically says the price excluding VAT cannot be shown as well as the inclusive price?

Yes as I posted "the price so stated shall be stated as a single amount"

It might not be so bad if both prices were given equal prominence but this is not the case sadly. I've alo sought the opinion of these guys http://www.nca.ie/ and whilst they agree with me they can take no action unless a member of the general public makes a complaint.

Yes ..... and that is complied with.
But it does not state that this should be the only price shown.

So if the price is also given as (xxx + VAT) is there legislation to stop it?

I think not ... but that is why I am asking.

I agree that the VAT Inclusive price should be the more prominent. Having it any other way is deliberately misleading, IMO.

It is only that I am unsure if - once the VAT Inclusive price is shown - there is anything to prevent the VAT Exclusive Price being shown also.

Yes ..... and that is complied with.
But it does not state that this should be the only price shown.

The crucial word is "single" and as I've already mentioned the NCA take the same view.

I don't think any fair minded person could see it any other way, it begs the question as to why you would show an exclusive price at all on a retail price ?
What exactly is the purpose of this if not to make the product look cheaper than it is

It is only that I am unsure if - once the VAT Inclusive price is shown - there is anything to prevent the VAT Exclusive Price being shown also.

Yes , at least the NCA thought so and I would imagine it is precisely to prevent cases like this were although both prices are shown the more expensive inclusive price is less prominent . Imagine going into a shop and a sign says €9.99 but then in very small print beside it 12.29 .

If it was allowed I'm sure there would be many many retailers doing it and obviously that is not the case.

"3. Where, for the purposes of or in connection with the sale by retail by a person of a commodity, the retail price of the commodity is stated orally by the person or by a servant or agent of the person or is stated on the commodity or on any container or wrapper in which the commodity is packed or on a ticket or label attached to the commodity or to such container or wrapper or in a catalogue or advertisement or in a notice or other document (other than an invoice), the price so stated shall be stated as a single amount inclusive of any charge made by the person for any tax payable in respect of the commodity."

Single in that case refers to the retail price quoted, and does not, from my interpretation, prevent a price being shown with the VAT separate, in addition to the VAT Inclusive retail price.

That particular SI is being complied with, IMO, which is why I asked if there was (other) legislation preventing other pricing being shown, in addition to the retail price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,341 ✭✭✭✭Tony

The NCA don't hold with that view and again I would point out that if it was permitted would it not be reasonable to expect more retailers to take more advatage of making items "appear" cheaper. It can be easily checked whether whether your interpretation is allowed by contacting the NCA

Edit: In cae this comes up in a search please see post 35 as Johnboy received a different answer from the NCA

I rang the NCA and spoke to a lady whose name begins with 'E' @ 5.12pm.

I asked if there was anything to prevent an Irish website from displaying a second price, showing VAT exclusive plus VAT amount, IN ADDITION to the correct retail price.

The answer I got was no ..... once the retail price is shown, inclusive of VAT, there is nothing in legislation to prevent the VAT exclusive price plus VAT amount from being shown also.

    regards

Thats a little strange since I got a different answer previously and begs the question as to why every retailer is not doing it?

The answer I got was clear and definite.

Then I guess the only real test would be if a member of the public made a complaint to the NCA who (quite rightly) will not take a complaint from another business.

As I understand it, the complainant is supposed to try to determine if...is compliant with legislation, as I have done, prior to their complaint.
Given the answer I received, as well as my own interpretation of the SI, I have no grounds for complaint - on that score.

I have a personal belief that the manner in which the prices are displayed, might be questioned .... but maybe under a different piece of legislation.
As the site sells to the general public it is likely (if the legislation is good) that the retail price should be the more prominent.
On the other hand, taking into account... they may have a means of avoiding that --- I don't know. I am not familiar with the relevant legislation.

If its trade only then yes its completely ok to have a single vat exclusive price ( as the trade buyer would claim back the vat ) but...does sell to the public and has a separate log in for trade members where trade prices are shown.

If its business to business only then as far as I'm aware thats ok but if it any part is open to retail then prices must be inclusive.

OP - I bought the combi box from satellite.ie

Have had few issues with it - just upgraded the firmware once and to my knowledge they are shipped with the latest firmware preloaded.

    Pros:
    Relatively cheap.
Can plug in a hard drive to allow you to record your programs
Easy enough with a PC to configure a range of favourites
Mine works very well with a TV sender allowing me to watch it on 2 TVs
Found the team at satellite.ie to be really helpful with all queries - (wrote a favourable review on their website for openess here).

    Cons
If left on too long (a day or two) the saorview stations lose their clear image - just restart the box though.
Tuning in stations - while easy you do need patience to get rid of duplicates or to re-order, (however PC tool makes this quite straightforward).
Care needs to be taken with the live recording - left my box on for a week and eventually burnt out my harddrive - (my own stupidity though, tried to treat it like a sky box).
Build quality - for the price you get what you pay for, not the sturdiest but for the price I find it grand.

All the best - hope you find a good one for yourself.
Don't forget - you will need an antenna for saorview and a dish for freeview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,830 ✭✭✭✭Taltos

Should add - wanted to get the combi box for my 80yr old mother - who hates tech.
However she hates the thought of an aeriel and dish being put on her house :(

Shame - would have saved her the UPC monthly fee but have to bow to her wishes.

Added this in just to show that I really like the box and have no hesitation in even getting it for my tech fearing mother. Not kidding - recently she got a new microwave - oh gawd - "head meet the wall (repeatedly)".

Bought the walker combo in Power City yesterday. The guy in the shop said that the Triax has some issues with recording (when you delete a recording it still takes up space on your disk), so I went for the walker.
Setup easy and so far so good.
It has a button to switch between terrestrial / satellite which is different to the last I had, where the epg list was all one, and the satellite now/next epg is a bit slow.
You can only record what you are watching !

I don't think there is such a thing as the perfect combo yet.
If I hit any major issues I'll let you know.
