    Day1 3 pints of water

    and your question is ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,161 ✭✭✭frag420

    Are you a fish??

What is the purpose of this? Im sure just drinking water will do loads for your lethargy and motivation. Try some fresh air too.

Sorry I have nothing else to add but..................................confused!!

I would call this the 365 day all-my-life water challenge. Thought this would be normal enough.

It's definitely not normal for most people to drink 6 litres of water a day. I would say the majority would drink less than 3 litres daily, easily.

6pints = ~3 litres, read the OP again....

Is it ok to be toxing up in Ireland?

No need at all for that much water.

Three litres is likely to leave you constipated as it flushes minerals like potassium out of your system.

Drink when thirsty, the whole drink as much water as you can thing has been entirely bunked and may in fact be harmful.

I could really use a cheeky volvic right now.

I would naturally drink 3 litres a day, I've a 700ml bottle that I'd drain in one go regularly :o I'm a big guy though, will it be doing me damage?

Depends, are you drinking it cos you're thirsty or want it? Then fine.

I drink about 2.5 litres myself helps me stay alert cos I don't drink coffee or tea.

But it's just the 4, 5, 6 litre madness I was referring to. No advantage to it at all.

I usually drink about 4 litres (not counting training time), and never experience problems you describe. It might matter more what you eat.

But you need to find what's the right amount for you, not just trying to hit some particular number.

tap and mineral water in ireland is full of sodium and potassium, you'd be very un likely to cause hyponatremia or hypokalemia from drinking 3 litres a day. Recommend values for a 75kg male is 2.5 litre which includes water from food, tea, milk etc..

If you're not sweating a lot or exercising, drinking too much water potentially can cause water poisoning.

Actually, you should not exceed 3L of water. More than that would put strain on your liver and particularly your kidneys.

That would really depend in size and activity. Over the course of a tough workout you could lose a litre or two had you increase the ideal amount that day.

I've been trying for the last week to get into the habit of drinking water and have been doing quite well, 4 glasses a day which is a lot for me.

Got up this morning and the waters off!

is that for sedentary or active people? and whose recommendation is it?

Any activity or situation that promotes heavy sweating can lead to water intoxication when water is consumed to replace lost fluids.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 372 ✭✭UL_heart_throb

There is no official daily recommended allowance of water. However,

    Based on:
    typical body fat composition
    typical weight
    typical %/mass water
    typical intracellular volume
    typical extracellular volume
    typical GFR
typical losses of water in urine
typical losses of water in faeces
typical losses of water in respiration
typical losses of water in sweating
typical insensible losses across the skin

The volume of water needed to maintain normal osmolality and replace loss fluids on a daily basis for the average person is around 2.5 l.

The institute of medicine in the USA which does a lot of work on RDA says the most typical water intake (median) was 3.7l for a man and 2.7l for a woman. These were for 'normal' levels of physical activity living in temperate climate. Values did range from less than 2l to over 8l.

Water intoxication is caused by consuming too much water, especially if you are not excreting enough. I.e. dilution hyponatreamia due to over drinking water. In the case of the the endurance athlete, they are over drinking because they are not sweating off sufficient water. They get thirsty, increase their ADH, and do not urinate. They are not pissing out enough, unlike the sedentary person. So they will dilute their sodium levels too by ingesting too much hypotonic fluids.

    I am not wrong.

it doesn't taste too great in Dublin, but a water filter helps a lot :)

    Seriously. T.M.I.

If you want to catalogue your nocturnal ramblings like this, get a blog. This thread was a train wreck to start with and now its just, well, pointless.

Have a lovely time in Dubai, enjoy your water.

If you want this thread reopened, pm me with a REALLY good reason.
