Chickens eating grass problem

A month ago I purchased 6 hens. I made a lovely 60x15ft run for them with lush grass. Now, however, the little darlings are scratching and eating all the grass. I reckon in 2 months I'll have a dirty, muddy run.

Now the guy down the lane has a perfectly manicured lawn with 10 hens sited on half the size of mine...What am I doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong. The hens are scratching for bugs to eat and also eat the grass. They will exfoliate the whole area no matter what you do. I don't know what your neighbour is doing to prevent that but what you're experiencing is perfectly normal.

Thanks. I was wondering if the neighbour has artificial grass lol.

He's probably feeding them a load of layers mash so they have no interest in anything else

you don't really have a problem here but eventually when you move the run the grass will shoot up and you will be cursing as hen poo it loaded with nitrogen
