Just passed my test so I'm looking to buy a car in the next few months.I am into kayaking and outdoors so I need a lot of space and I was hoping to get a small estate.

I'll have around 2000 to spend. I'd prefer a petrol and if possible something with a bit of power.I'd like something out of the ordinary aswell so please don't recommend Golfs or Focuses. Can anyone recommend a car that would fit these criteria?

    Thanks.

e30 at 18... hmmmmm insurance will LOVE HIM! :D

i dont think you got a lot of choice OP. Funny enough estate golf or estate focus would be perfect for you, but you wrote those off the list.

156 estate? you might find one 1.6?

That E30 is gorgeous but the insurance would cost me an arm and a leg. They are also available in 1.6 and 1.8's aren't they?

These are very hard to insure for young drivers too. I've no idea why though...

I could always sell a kidney to pay for it. I have a spare one.

Add any other body organs that you can also sell :D

On a serious note yep they are available in 1.6 and i think 1.8 also but alot off them have engine transplants in then to bring them up to 2.0 and above

Pick up a clean one and you'll be sorted. Pretty economical, easy to insure (not sure how easy for 18 year old but should be too bad) and plenty of space..

Yeah I wouldn't mind something like that as long as I could fit 4-5 people with gear in it.I want it to last me a few years aswell.I was thinking about a 190E Mercedes with a roofrack but then I came to my senses. That would be a dream car though.

They'd be cheap enough on insurance too for a younger person. Very reliable. Might be a bit of a squeeze with gear and 5 people but then most cars would be. You'd probably need a roof rack for the boats.

Maybe you should be looking at getting a van?

May take 4 adults plus a Couple of river kayaks inside the car if you take out the middle seats front and rear. Definitely individual and plenty within budget.

The original question reminds me of that feature Top Gear did a few years ago when they looked for suitable cars for new drivers to insure and run themselves. Clarkson opted for a Volvo Estate with an anarchy flag!

Would people recommend a Subaru Forester? Whats the smallest engine you can get in one of those?

2.0, either turbocharged or NA. To be honest, I think you'll struggle to get insured on even the base model.

Yes absolutely. Lovey car to drive, some people are not a fan of their looks though. A lot of them were 2.0l here and some 2.5l. Not great on juice though, 25mpg tops on mixed driving.

Insurance is going to be the stopper here. No Subaru is going to be cheap for an 18 year old.

these are great also the carina/caldana estates... but like most jap scrap, their boots are rusted like f*** ( espeically the honda if memory serves ) due to light fixes are the rubber surrounding them leaking... hidden behind all the plastics.

    Bulletproof otherwise.

As another kayaker, you don't NEED an estate. A hatchback would suit your needs, as long as it is not a polo sized car. You boat will usually be on the roof. This should open up a few options.

Astra diesel has a bit of poke in it once you get out of the low gears. I know the new models can be 1.3l not sure about the one sin your price range though

Am I not correct to say as an 18yr old , just past test (congrats:) )approaching an insurance company with more that 900cc, they'll liberally use industrial Vaseline with the quote. I think when they hear the word estate they'll throw the book at the OP.?? Or have things changed in recent years?

Well if I buy one it wont be wrecked with stupidly big wheels and dodgy Halfords parts or an 8 foot antenna on the roof. I wouldn't lower it either.

Go with AXA. Got quoted online for €2330 for a 316i E30 Touring.

    And €2210 for a 1.8 V40...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 194 ✭✭crossy

Go with an Omega estate like the one below. I have one like this. Comfy car with pleanty of power. come from 2 litre to 3.5 litre. I have been drving a 2.5 TDI one since I was 17
