Whats the craic with all the uncertainty around this launch? Is that normal? I'll be seriously p***ed off if i dont get one on bleedin launch day! Surely hmv grafton st will do a midnight launch?!

I remember this happened when the Xbox 360 came out, but I do remember HMV informing people, that they didn't have enough to fufil all pre-orders. I think they may have sent out text messages to let people know. So I wouldn't worry until we see some solid information.

Arrrrggghhhh I pity the poor manager in hmv limerick if I do t get mine by chrimbo, hopefully they base it on pre order date. They really shouldt be taking pre orders and people's deposits unless they have concrete knowledge of how man pre orders they can accept. Lets give them the benefit of the doubt until we know for sure i suppose

Have a guaranteed wii u zombie edition launch day console from GameStop newbridge 380 cash??

I'm going to cut you some slack today because you lost your job, but that's the first and last time you are going to ask that question on this thread, OK?

If its against charter sorry but sure we are all in same boat re hmv etc saying their will be shortages.

Ah ill say no more sorry!!!!

Edit seen charter--- sorry and thank you mr e

I dunno what it is but it just doesnt seem like a "real" console launch, there just isnt the same hype around it as there was for the wii, ps3 or xbox, for instance i asked many of my friends who dont play games and they have no clue its being launched at the end of the month or that it even exists.
I also know very few of my gamer friends who are getting one, maybe its just the lacklustre launch titles for them but the fact it doesnt seem to have been pushed at casuals where the wii excelled is puzzling

Just seen on twitter that the nintendo ID's are console locked. So if your console breaks or is stolen you lose all the games you've downloaded?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,835 ✭✭✭✭cloud493

Assumedly, you could call Nintendo and get it switched. Bit off an odd way to do things if that is the case though.

I'm not 100% certain, but I'm pretty sure Iwata mentioned this is in one of his video's or it was said somewhere else. I somehow have it in my head that I heard that already, but could be wrong.

Was just thinking, is this the first console launched with so much pre and post release scrutinisation? Don't remember so much talk before the 360 and PS3 launches. Think because back then there weren't things like Twitter.

I think this is it alright. Lot's more avenues for games journalist's to post their views/rumours about console's even before their launch. Even the US launch this weekend, when it happened before I remember not hearing for a day or two about anything substantial, now it's within the first hour of launch. I think there's also the fact some people are classing it as a half-next generation.

God christmas is gonna be hilarious when parents hook up their kids brand new wiius to discover that theres a monster 5gb firmware update

    http://kotaku.com/5961577/bummed+out-wii-u-owners-vent-on-twitter-during-huge-firmware-update

Thats not even the best part, if you power it off during this process it bricks the machine, so expect many an impatient parent/child managing this feat on christmas as well

I like the fact it's the half-next generation, it reminds me of the dreamcast, pc engine releases back in the golden days - I'm just hoping that some great classics are released for it by third party companies. The backwards compatibility means my Wii and Virtual console collection will still get used so it's all good.

5gb??? What the hell? That's some serious firmware update!

Hopefully they offer the option of updating from a USB so that you can download in advance.

No option to download via USB , be prepared for a 1 to 4 hour wait depending on ur Internet speed

would not be surprised if its just RE6 and MGS Rising. would love if it was MGS4 though would be a big capture if they managed to get that onto the console.

I can see many returns, whenever the shops open back up. Really awful start to things imho.

Will also have to make sure that if anyone I know is getting there kids one of these about this, as I will probably be the one they call to take a look. So may as well nip this one now.

Yup gonna be doing exactly the same thing, gonna start suggesting people set it up the night before so their kids can actually play it on christmas day

Guardian now reporting that later reports (?!) suggest firmware update is 1 to 2 GB, not 5GB.

I think people are confusing how much space the entire OS takes up with the update...

    Yup, correct.
The OS takes up 4 or 5gb of the memory in total out of the cardboard wii u box. It doesnt actually download 4gb of stuff, just a lot of small updates needed, for an update.

I guess it all depends on peoples connections in the States right now, some say it takes 40mins to update, others are saying it takes up to 4 hours.

Here is a run down of it all on NWR (as usual) http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/blog/32534

True but still the fact is Nintendo effectively launched an unfinished product, a 2gb firmware update on day 1 is pretty significant, and so far the guardian are the only ones reporting its 2gb games press are still saying 5

As I said previously, the one thing I dreaded about this is that they're doing what everyone these days does and just send out the product assuming they can push the update later. funny thing is, it's only with the consoles Nintendo does this. They seem to take their time with games.

As for updating it, I'd say the best idea, if you don't want to open the box and set it up before the kids get to use it(I know I gave my parents about 5 mins to set everything up before coming down to see what Santa brought:)) they can still play the games and then maybe set the update downloading during dinner or Christmas night.

! will be closer to 4 hours in this house:mad:
Can you just set up and play without hooking it up to the internet?

btw anyone worried about their preorders in hmv - I was told it will be on the basis of where your order comes on the list, and they can look up and tell you how far down you are. Was also told that it's the deluxe version they're expecting to be short of.

Yeah games can be played straight out of the box so just update when your not gonna be using it like over night or if your at work or as someone said during christmas dinner.

As for HMV hopefully my September pre order will be enough but im a little worried as i went in about a month later and changed my pre order from a deluxe to a zombie u bundle I wonder will this affect me on the queue of pre orders??

    Wouldn't be so sure.
I think there may be confusion.
The hard drives are formatted for each wii u console.
So if you have an external for your console and bring it to your friends, it won't be read.

The account system on the wii u allows users to enter "existing nintendo network ids", so that points to actual IDs not being locked.
    Your purchases may be.
