I didnt know such a thing existed until about an hour ago.

So just for future reference, if somebody was to get spiked by a needle (I have a serious fear of getting mugged/threatened with a syringe), whats the procedure to getting treated.

Do you go straight to hospital? Do all hospitals have the medicine? Do you need a referral from a doctor? etc...

You'd go to A&E, they would get consult from consultant in Infectious diseases. Transmission for HIV from needle stick injury is approximately 1/200. If you went to a big enough hospital they should have the drugs.

It doesn't need to be done within 20 minutes or anything like that. Actually I'd suspect hospital have a good protocol for this for managing their own staff getting needle stick injuries from hiv patients.
