Basic question to all practioners of the paleo idea.Since under the paleo diet there is no intake of grains, dairy and legumes what can i use to maintain energy levels so i can still train effectively?
Also i know green tea is a stimulant but is that an absolute no no under paleo diet?

Sweet potato makes a great pre workout snack.
    Green tea is allowed.

I wouldn't rely on the fruit. I think you need potatoes or sweet potatoes to make gains

Sorry I should have included squash such as butternut squash in with the sweet potatoes also. Cordain has a new book book out - paleo for athletes - which you might find helpful.

What type of training? For a paleo diet most of your energy should come from fat, there's not much need for a lot of carbs unless you're doing endurance sports (which is not really part a paleo lifestyle but each to their own)

    Hmmm im a little confused.
Whats the difference between a ketogenic diet and a paleo diet?
Because of my systemic candida issue i must stay low carb for at least a few months.
I also want to go running each day or two.
So i figured, ok il go keto and use fat for energy instead of carbs.
Does a paleo involve extremely low carbs but still using fat for energy and if so does anyone mind giving me a brief outline on the biology of how this works?

Because afaik if i drop out of ketosis by eating a few too many carbs i would not be relying on fat for energy.Or so i thought.

A paleo diet can have a good % more from carbs depending on what you eat on it - take a look on marksdailyapple.com get an idea on what paleo actually is.

No Grains,No Dairy,No Legumes?thats the basic premise right?

In a nutshell, but it's still easy rack up the carbs, very easy rack up carbs if you want to on it , just look through some of the fruits and veggies that you can eat on it and you can see the grams add up should you decide to

What about coconut oil? It's great for an energy boost.

    This.

It annoys me greatly that Paleo is lumped in to the "low carb" diet trend. It also annoys me that people think it's a weight loss diet. But then again I am just an irritable crank.

Plenty of cals to gain weight on fats and proteins too - good oils like red palm, coconut, things like butter, some seed spreads and some nut butters which will be ok with candida which is what i think you posted about having before, keep increasing your protein and fat intake until you start gaining, it CAN be done, easy, once you put your mind to it, if you do not put your full head into it, you are only fooling yourself

You will really learn a lot by ready paleo blogs and books, its been done to death on here to so if you do a thread search, you will find a lots of past threads speaking about it

I am really hearing you on the cranky thing, really hormonal, don't know why, if im not deeply in thought about pondering life, im ready to kill

What annoye me is people expectring you to give them all the answers in a post ... if only it were that simple!

But yeah, fruits and veg are enough, just pick the right ones and switch it about

Ok think of it this way...

Paleo is a style of eating. The "common" foods you're allowed on it tend to low carb because the majority of grain based carbs are eliminated. BUT you can quite easily eat high carb on it if you want to. The "style" of eating says nothing about the calorie content of the diet tho. Because most people tend to derive the majority of their daily kcals from grain based sources, their diet becomes quite low kcals when you eliminate those common foods, so when they transition over to Paleo they lose weight.

There's a very broad based of foods to choose from within Paleo dieting which can be quite high in protein and healthy fats, so fulfilling a rather high target kcal level is totally doable.

    Make sense?

In theory it makes sense but I think for 9/10 people if you wanna build decent muscle you gotta eat potatoes/sweet potatoes. The high fat/protein + fruit and leafy veg will leave you feeling satiated and you'll end up not eating enough kals to make gains

I'm confused - are you suggesting I'm saying don't eat potato/sweet potato if you're on Paleo? Because I'm not!
