Getting a prescription switched by the doctor over the phone

I was prescribed medication yesterday but I found out that its not the best medication for my particular ailment. I know a far better medication for my situation. I can't afford to pay for another appointment, can you ring up your doctor and ask them to change your prescription then pick it up without having to pay for an appointment? The clinic I go to has multiple doctors on shifts so she probably won't be there today or tomorrow but she could always fax the prescription to the pharmacy (I've had a psychiatrist do that before). Are you able to discuss things like this with your doctor over the phone to avoid going in and paying for an appointment?
