Physio for herniated disc

    My physio has had me doing a lot of isolation stuff for my core /transverse abdominis for herniated disc in back . I dont want medical/professional advice just wondering what is consensus in sports scieince/academic physiotherpy on physical treatments for sciatica/herniated discs. Some well cited published papers ive read online claim isolating transverse abdominis and general core isolation exercises are useless for reducing back pain , effects of herniation etc and that just a general exercise programme is equally effective and that having a strong "core" is no defence against back inury/pain.

    IMO it it impossible to answer a question like that. Back pain and injury are two separate things. You can have a back injury and no pain, in fact there is evidence a large portion of the population have some form of back injury but no pain. Similarly you can have back pain but no real pain.

    You say you have a herniated disc which i presume is how the physio prescribed you the exercises but talk about papers which reference back pain.....those studies might have been looking at chronic back pain rather than acute.
