So the "fifth major" begins tomorrow. Anyone got any tips or fancies? Think Tiger is a good price at 22/1 even if in average form but may just go with Phil.

Tempted to back Westwood, in great form and is there abouts most weeks, great final round last week and surely he's due a decent win soon

14/1 might be a bit short though

Usual bookies are paying 6 places

Even me a big Tiger fan who actually likes what he is trying to do with his swing would not back him at the moment. He is swing is manky and it's not good enough at the moment, doubt he is going to turn it around in a week.

Much as I hate to admit it Westwood has a huge chance this week, actually very hard to see past him to be honest, accuracy is key around Sawgrass..! (obviously :o ) As in if you miss your targets your going to be dropping shots because you can't get up and down too many times (no matter how good you are). If he hits as many greens as he usually dose he will gain shots on almost everyone this week. Carrying the form final round last week I reckon @ 12/1 it's the smart money.

McIlroy looked like he lacked a little focus last week to me, couldn't exactly pinpoint it but he was definitely not in top gear. That is really simply admitting he has another gear though, and he cruised to play off last week .. @ 10/1 he is deserving favorite.

There you go, some crap tipping if there ever was any first and second favorite..! For good reason though, if I had to go outside I would look at Jason Day, he is coming back to form and put some good scores together last week. Expecting a good show from GMac, who knows ..! And Sang Moon Bae is still on the radar, classy young player but has not shown up at the weekend yet.

Looking forward to this now.. :)

Have had another look and i've decided on

    Scott
    Bradley
    McDowell
    Snedeker

Rory McIlroy is the bookies favourite but I think a lot will steer clear of him as he swerved it totally last year clearly stating he didnt like the place. Graeme McDowell might be a better pick seeing as he had 3 good rounds there in 2011.Webb Simpson is another one I'm picking.

Didn't McIlroy say that one of the reasons he split with Chubby was that he wanted to play there last year but management advised against it.

Don't think it was because he doesn't like the place. How could you not like Sawgrass!

    BBC website -

He (McIlroy) once said of Sawgrass: "I don't like the golf course for a start. I find it very awkward off the tee. You're hitting across fairways all the time.
"It's personal preference - some guys love Sawgrass and some guys don't like it so much."

I wasnt making it up honest ;-) He said it the same way I'd be thinking oh I'll give Birr a miss this week :-)

I think this applies to Westwood as much as it does to Sang Moon Bae. Westwood shoots 66 in Quail Hollow last Sunday when he was out of the running. He cant putt and doesn't seem intent on actually improving that aspect of his game anytime soon. I for one am sick of hearing commentators on Sky saying if only Westwood could hole a few more putts blah blah blah! Ya and if he had a hole in one each round he would win more too!!!!

Luke Donald, Webb Simpson, Zach Jonhson are my tips for the weekend.

    Hunter Mahon is my guess

Could make arguments for a whole heap of players this week but I have a feeling Ernie might get the win he's been threatening all year.

Also like McDowell and Day is coming into a bit of form and played well here last year. Cink is a huge price for someone who played well last week bar the final round and had a Top 20 here last year.

I'v never seen Tiger swing so bad ..! The shape and sequence looks ok but his tempo and everything else just looks crap.. He looks like he is just trying to trash it every time. What a hack ... (Joking)..!

Some group with Stricker,Mickelson and Mcilroy...!

Interest discussion talking through Rory's bag and the various clubs and setup. Driver through the settings was set at 7.75 degrees and my accident initially shaft was 1/2" longer than standard which gave him an extra few yards and so happened he didn't loose accuracy.
Very interesting to see his club distances especially the phenomenal distances with the shorter clubs. The introduction of the 2 iron this week is a good one especially given the distance he can get from it.

did Rory not hit his 3 wood longer then Fowlers / Points drives in the playoff hole last week? I only got a few mins of the coverage last night and seemed to be the same again - well over 300 yards with carry.

I think Butch put it best when he said Tiger is playing "golf swing" rather than "golf"

Backed him start of week to win and a top 5. If I had anymore than a few quid on it I'd be laying off a portion of it now!

Well, that puts him at about 17 h/cap level on boards.ie?:)

How often have we seen Luke Donald shoot level par on day 1 of a tournament and then tear through the field over the next 3 rounds to contend. I made a promise to myself that I'd back him at the start of round 2 in any tournament where he has his usual quiet start. Here goes €5 e/w at 25/1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,690 ✭✭✭Whyner

Cabrera had a 9 on a par 3 yesterday and swiftly withdrew, stay classy big man

What was the story with Harrington's penalty stroke just there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭ProV

Ouch, not again ! He will have to steady to make the cut now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Phoenix Park

Westwood grinning from ear to ear. Must have just seen Rory finish up and get ready to pack his bags!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

Poulter starts with a double. Ouch!! Good round from Justin Rose to sneak inside the cut.

The leaderboard is still very bunched.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

This is awful by the Irish players. Harrington has 2 holes, one par 3 and a par 5, to catch up a shot and be the only one to make the cut. Iron game very poor today. Too many bunkers.

Players really need to start being punished for not calling fore. That tee shot was obviously going straight for a crowd of people and nothing was called and as a result some poor awl fecker has his head split open!

Sorry Rickie but cant watch your tear it up any longer.
