Just got a call from my dad in the last hour. He works for HB Dennis and was informed today he's going to be out of a job as HB Dennis in Airside, Swords has decided to close their doors. Such a shame, another dealership gone. This country really is going down the toilet. Feel sorry for the lads (salesmen and mechanics) who lost their jobs today. :(

Sorry to hear that man. Quite a shock as they were one of the bigger and established ones.

They should have stayed put over near Christchurch.

I bought my Punto and Alfa new off them, and they were all sound.

When they moved to the new place in Airside, all their attitudes changed (for the worse) and I didnt bother dealing with them anymore.

They got too big for their boots.

Maybe they merged a few different places, but they were originally on the Richmond Road. They were all sound lads.

I'd say the OP is reliant on his allegedly soon to be redundant Father. Google only shows this thread.

Never bought from them but very attentive when I was in with them. Terrible shame if its true.

Sad to see another garage go due to the recession. I worked for them, (14 years) in the 80's and 90's in New st. They were great guys to work for. Had some great times both in work and social.

Very sad news indeed. Hope all the lads out there can find work soon. Happened to us a couple of years ago, but we were lucky.

My dad rang me in tears, I think it's true!!........

    Sad times.
There's always a glimmer of hope though, was only talking to a carpenter yesterday who's started working in a med device manufacturer as an operator, he had no such experience and 'tis all new to him.

Fingers crossed your Dad has some luck finding work.

An article on it in tonights Herald said it was only the Volvo side of it that closed, they pictured transporters removing all the Volvo stock. Said in that the switch to also sell Alfa Romeo impacted on the decision to close the Volvo part of the business.

Guys I've got to say that its been an abysmal couple of months in the motor trade. Nobody you talk to is doing anything, well with new cars anyway. The first quarter numbers just havent added up for many and I'd say we've yet to see a lot more fail this year. Squeaky bum time for us all in the business.

But for sure we all knew this was coming. The scrappage scheme only gave false hope last year :(

Maybe of new car prices in this country werent such a bleeding joke and so bleeding high, then maybe people would buy a new car on a more regular basis.

That's not really the fault of the dealer though is it?

Devastating that yet another dealership has gone.

Depreciation is higher than ever on new mid and high level cars. Who wants to loose 5 or 6 k pa for the privilage of driving a new motor?

In the UK there are very very large lease/fleet discounts and also very attractive monthly lease rates and these cars then eventually make it onto the private market at low prices passing on the discounts.

Ireland has none of that, is an arguably much poorer country than the UK - there is no reason that there should be large volumes of new cars sold here especially with the pricing.

Terrible news, behind every dealership/business closing in this country there are skills and careers being permanently ended.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,954 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Drove into there today and it looks a sorry sight. Cars removed and looking very empty. It's mad 'cos I was there 3 weeks ago pricing a new car off them and there was loads of activity and lots of stock. Loads of new Chryslers as well and Alfas.

Abolish vrt , reduce draconian road tax rates and halve tax on fuel then we'll see a surge in car sales. Is that a flying pig I see.....

Draconian Road tax rates?? Not in this country. You can tax cars worth over 50k for 160 a year.

just because it costs over 50k to buy doesnt make it a good car. You can charge anything you want for a car in this country aslong as it has a sh*tty little 4 cylinder diesel engine and cheap road tax.

I think what bbsrs meant is that you cant have anything with a decent bit of power in it without bending over and taking one from the tax office

AH don't start this sh1te, we're talking about a long established business closing and unfortunate people losing their jobs.

There are enough threads moaning about tax and VRT...
