Hey all I was wondering if loosing weight through cardio and a low calorie diet is the best way to lower my body fat?

You see when I loose the weight I want to tone up/build muscle.

Am I better Loosing the weight first, Or go on a gym routine and building muscle to loose body fat?

The best way to achieve YOUR goals will depend on where you are at the minute.

The fact that you are thinkign about losing weight first would suggest that might be the best option for you. It depends on your stats, current BF% etc.

Just fix your diet and start lifting weights to get things moving. Then you can focus on the specifics and decide where you need to go

There is no harm doing weights now, even if its just one quick session per week. If you are overweight you are probably carrying more muscle than you would if you were never overweight -since you are in effect lifting more around all day, I think I read before that up to 30% of additional weight some people have could be muscle (which sounded very high to me but it makes sense there is some). There is no point losing this 'extra' muscle and just doing some training will help prevent some muscle loss.

I remained a fairly steady 12stone for a year while dropping fat & building muscle at about the same rate. Even though I was the about same weight I think I had to stop wearing some jeans as they were folding over on themselves due to fat loss, I was definitely putting new holes in my belt a few times..

I can see the logic in that. I think I'll do mainly cardio but fit in bodweight workouts a few times a week.
I'm 5'10 at 84kg so I can see where this "extra" muscle is coming from. I have a high body fat (around 25%) so i guess my aims are,
    Get to 80kg
    lower body fat 10%.
