    new-look-at-vin-diesel-in-riddick-102344-00-470-75.jpg
The new film finds Riddick cast away and left for dead on a barren, sun-scorched planet, upon which he appears to be the only living creature. Unhappily for him, however, that assessment soon turns out to be incorrect.
Pursued by a race of lethal alien predators, Riddick is left with no other option but to set off an emergency beacon… a beacon that alerts a group of ruthless mercenaries to his whereabouts. If the aliens don’t get him first, this lot surely will!
The new image shows Riddick carrying what looks like a staff made of bones. Could that be the skull of one of the aliens he’s slain? Could it even be the skull of the space jockey? Sorry, we’ve got that guy on the brain…
Riddick has yet to receive an official release date, although Diesel recently revealed that the earliest possible opening could be January 2013. He also mentioned that the studio is pleased with what they’ve seen, and further sequels have been discussed.

This really is labour of love for Diesel apparently no salary for him and he is producing with a smaller budget from the second film which bombed

Karl Urban, Katee Sackhoff, Bokeem Woodbine and Raoul Trujillo are also in the cast

i really liked pitch black but thought the other film was a bit rubbish. the first game was very good as well

I dont know if id label it a labour of love for Vin Diesel or more a last ditch attempt to get his career going again, along with returning to the Fast and Furious franchise majority of his other films have been terrible.

Still though I did enjoy the first two and will certainly take a look at this.

Pitch Black is classic sci-fi/horror - required viewing for fans of either genre. The Chronicles of Riddick is a disjointed, embarrassing, fantasy mess, though on the plus side Thandie Newton is fine in it and Riddick kills someone with a cup.

David Twohy wrote and directed both of those previous outings so it's anyone's guess which way this one will go. The writing/directing track record isn't very encouraging. I'd be concerned they give Diesel too many lines - the practically mute psycho loner from Pitch Black really worked.

Tell me they're not suffixing the movie title with "Dead Man Stalking"

Pitch Black was awesome, Chronicles looked amazing but it was a mess, and it seems like two completely different universes, PB was fairly low budget whereas Riddick wasnt, was nearly 6 times the cost of the first one.

I quite liked Chronicles I have to say.

Anyhow Katee Sackhof is in it so must be seen:D

I liked his page on Facebook and every now and then then he posts updates on his filming. Anyway, I think he put up a few months ago that this film is much closer to Pitch black then Riddick in tone and so on.

The production photo's look good too.

One of the rare occasions when the videogame adaptation is generally accepted as superior to the source material. Much grittier and less gunplay than the trailer suggests.

It's been years since I watched Pitch Black, must again one of these days. Don't think I ever bothered with Chronicles, just played the game instead when the reviews were infinitely more encouraging!

that game is brilliant, one of the few fps games to get melee combat right, shivving people in prison was great craic :pac:

Off the top of my head, it may be the only game to nail shivvin' mechanics :p

A gritty, violent and (excuse the pun) pitch black prison drama always seemed like a much more suitable fit for the character than camp sci-fi nonsense. Hopefully the new film will be nearer it than its cinematic predecessor.

    You know what?
    I liked 'Chronicles...'

    There, I've said it.
Sure it's a mess of a movie, but it's an imaginative, exotic, baroque mess; not to mention a rare example of a proper space-opera - you don't get those every day.

Pitch Black though was genuinely excellent: one of those tidy mid-budget features with a neat idea & conceit, a decent ensemble cast, and an instantly iconic lead character. Maybe if Chronicles didn't huff the crazy juice so much & fail doing so, there might have been more longevity for the character of Riddick. He certainly had bags of potential and Diesel was excellent in the part.

Honestly I don't get how chronicle was a mess and people keep saying this ?

I thought it was fairly straight forward.

Then again I used to follow this show when it was on
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0178149/

It was kind of Farscape meets a playboy shoot with a side order of s&m:eek:
I won't say I could follow it - cause it was properly insane - but maybe its why Chronicle seemed straightforward to me :P

there's a line in Riddick where the main villian says something like "we have lost the purifier!" and it cracked myself and my mates up in the cinema, all evening we were repeating the line with different kitchen utensils "we have lost the blender!" "we have lost the george foreman grill!"

I'm very excited about this. I'm happy with Urban's comments about it being closer to Pitch Black than Chronicles in tone. Don't get me wrong; I have a massive soft spot for CoR. It was cheesy, fun brain candy but I think the tone of Pitch Black suited the character a lot more.

I really can't wait. Think I'll download Assault on Dark Athena on Steam later, I loved Butcher Bay on the Xbox.

I liked the Chronicles of Riddick too, particularly the directors cut which was recommended here. Pitch Black was certainly the better movie but I'd welcome a sequel in either style.

After i got past the incongruity between Pitch Black and CoR I actually really enjoyed the latter .

I very much enjoyed CoR - but at that point I hadn't seen Pitch Black (still not sure I've seen it in total come to think of it

Loved both the Chronicles and Pitch Black. Chronicles was never one of those movies I would ever recommend to someone but I have never got bored of watching it, I love a lot of the quotes

watch it, great movie and if you liked CoR you should love it!

Chronicles is one of my favourite guilty pleasures. I actually really enjoyed it! It's all over the place but has fantastic design, generally looks great and features some excellent set pieces. It rips off plenty of other Sci-Fi movies in the process, but It's a perfectly entertaining blockbuster.

How did the cut differ from the original?

    loved pitch black very underrated

I really liked Chronicles. I thought it had real ambition and imagination and was a good bit of 'hard' sci-fi. And the ending was positively Shakespearean.

Loved both films. They're both quite different, but they both do what they do very well. I know what I'll be watching this weekend.

There are more scenes in it that make it a bit more sci-fi (rather than simply a hollywood blockbuster) and take itself a little more seriously (in a way which I enjoyed). Sorry, that's a bit vague, I wasn't really taking note.

I would definitely say that the difference is significant enough to be worth watching but I just can't guarantee (or do much to help you guess) you'll enjoy it more.

Good news in relation to the rating, the film has been given an R for strong violence, language and some sexual content/nudity. Really excited for this though a lot of this is down to me desperately wanting another Riddick game alongside the film.

Cool. Loved Pitch Black. CoR, as somebody else said, might as well have been the product of a different franchise altogether, and it was vastly inferior, but it did have a kind of barmy ambition that's rare in that kind of movie. However, I just can't quite shake the feeling that the complete reimagining of Jack was a sin on par with killing Newt off in cryosleep.

I would easily believe this is a labour of love for Diesel. He had a lot of involvement with the brilliant Chronicles game, and he founded Tigon studios for the purpose. I don't doubt that was a factor in making it better than 99% of its ilk and many others. I mean, it stands on its own as a game, Arkham Asylum only got around to doing a lot of that stuff years later.

The thing people tend to forget is that Pitch Black is actually at least as much about Carolyn Fry as it was about Riddick. That was a big part of what made the character work, that he could skulk around being sinister while somebody else was actually driving the plot forward. While they might be able to replicate that tone again, I don't think they can repeat the trick in that sense, we've spent too much time with the character by now.

If it's going to be more 'Pitch Black' than 'Chronicles' then it's definitely a movie I'll be excited about. Absolutely loved Pitch Black, Diesel was awesome in it but Hauser turned in a cracking performance as well. The scene where they're checking out the container still makes me smile to this day:
    Diesel: Looks Clear.
*Alien explodes out and flies away*
Hauser: I thought you said it was clear!
Diesel: I said it *looks* clear.
Hauser: Well how does it look now?
    Diesel: *adjusts goggles* Looks clear.

Perfectly delivered line that summed up Riddick for me.

Any update on a release? The article in the OP speculates it could be as early as this month, I assume that never happened?

Edit: September in the US, according to IMDB.

Sounds good but I am skeptical that it this will be anything more than a vehicle for Vin Diesel.

It's a passion project for Diesel. He's spent the past few years lobbying the studio to make the film and has given up a pay cheque in order to get it made. If the film flops then he won't see a dimes payment for the 5 or 6 years he has spent trying to get the film made. I have every faith in Diesel and Twohy delivering a damn good film, even the much maligned Chronicles of Riddick was vastly improved by the directors cut. Diesel's video game company produced perhaps the single greatest tie in game ever produced and given how much he's put into the franchise over the years I doubt that this upcoming film will a simple run if the mill sequel as they hope that it will be the first of many more sequels.

Honestly, on the strength of the game alone, I'd have given it a chance.

Watched a bit of Chronicles in the break room the other day, it appeared to be on tele again and it was the directors cut

the special effects jump between looking good and really bad, but some of the action is just really spot on still. I got to see the part where riddick kills dudeface with the two giant axes again and remembered why the film was actually pretty ****ing decent. Compare it to most other action films if you will and its a lot more enjoyable than most tripe that makes it past production. I liked it, I still have the DVD somewhere but now I wanna go find the directors cut

To yet another teaser trailer I say

To the content of said trailer I say :D

I look forward to seeing the full trailer, that's for sure. My only reservation is that the makers don't try to copy the Pitch Black format too much; any attempt to ape the first film will only invite comparisons with it; and Pitch Black was such a perfect little b-movie, any clone will come off second best.
