Somehow I doubt the danger caused by this disgraceful behavior registers in their pea sized brains.

I also doubt any of the perpetrators will be arrested or prosecuted, but if a normal person was to try this.....

Culture??? The video you posted did not display culture.

I hope the Guards arrested the two of those idiots for risking innocent peoples lives and everyone that was following and driving illegally where brought to task and the ISPCA took the horses off them because this was cruel to the horses to be putting them in danger of death.

sure they have every right, on their own land. You want to be on the road with everyone else, you follow the rules. Simples.
They should be shown no leniency at all and any suggestion made to AGS or Courts or papers that it's there cultural right should be taken as an attempt to pervert the course of justice and wasting police time.

They claim it as part of their culture and therefore right to do so.

Don't deny them their right to their unique culture, we should all be proud of them

It's unique because it's damn dangerous and idiotic.

Well it is a very environmentally friendly way to travel if you ignore the rake of Hiaces behind the sulkies.

Presumably Foggy,in this context,is referring to the horses...

Well, I did not want to feed the beast by putting into a Culture forum.
This has nothing to do with culture and all to do with a complete disregard for the Law, the rights and safety of road users, animal weflare etc.. but as we know Traveller rights supersede the rights of regular folk.

Will they be arrested...will they fook.

Traveller apologists like pavee point have ensued that this behavior will not be confronted as it is too much effort, and they have achieved this goal with state funding.

That video clip is truly frightening! It's a miracle that there wasn't someone killed. Jeeps and horses barrelling down a busy main route at high speeds on the wrong side of the road. The Gardai seemed to just give up and let them at it! Unbelievable!

Why isn't this on the front page of the papers today? What have the Road Safety Authority to say about this? (If it was a politician driving on the wrong side of the road Gay Byrne would be all over the media).
What have the Gardai Press authorities said about this? Have any arrests been made Do the Garda Traffic Corps even know about it? (They will when I send the link to the Garda Press Office and the Minister for Justice!)

Do we have to wait until a bus-load of school children or French tourists swerves and crashes to avoid these neanderthal knuckleheads?

    Justice Minister: alan.shatter@oireachtas.ie

Gardaí: Man arrested following YouTube harness race - Irish Examiner -
    http://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/ireland/gardai-man-arrested-following-youtube-harness-race-550767.html

"Gardaí have confirmed that a man in his 20s was arrested following a harness race on the main Cork to Mallow road which saw competitors weave dangerously into the path of oncoming traffic.

The incident, which took place on the morning of May 5, has garnered attention after footage was posted to the video-sharing site YouTube.
The footage wasapparently filmed by a member of the competitors' entourage travelling in a vehicle alongside.

It depicts the two harness racers - also known as sulky racers - repeatedly crossing into the path of oncoming traffic amid sustained attempts by a garda car to bring the proceedings to a halt.

Gardaí in Blarney said a male in his late 20s was arrested at the scene after the race and conveyed to Gurranabraher Garda Station in Cork
He was later released and the matter is currently under investigation."

I'd have expected more than just one to be arrested - let's hope the investigation follows through. Many of the cars' registrations were clearly visible on the video clip. If this sort of madness becomes a regular occurance - it's only a matter of time before some innocent drivers and their passengers are killed.

just for balance, I'd like to see Road Bowling outlawed too.

ps also cycle races on open roads.

I've never seen so many traffic violations in one place at the one time. Even the kid in the van with no seatbelt on.

One of the entourage can be heard in the video calling the Gardai in the cari "Dirty Dangerous Basterds" !

Road Bowling: Don't see too much of that on Cork - Mallow road. I view it as a mild annoyance, they do put signs up where they're at it to give them their dues.

both organised events that go ahead with AGS permission in general, and with regards to cycle races and sportives, usually with a garda presence as well. Totally different.

unless a road is offically closed.as with a Rally for instance, the public road is not the place for any sport.

Came across a Sulkie race just past the Dooradoyle exit on the motorway near Limerick last year. I lost no time in blowing my horn to express my dissatisfaction once a safe distance had been reached.

I could see nothing wrong with if it was regulated, Ie cooperate with the law and close off a portion of road for a couple of hours. If they do it with motorcycle road racing I couldn't see it a problem these.

thats my point in a nutshell, if it were done officially I'd have no objection provided that the welfare of the poor horses was looked after.

And I presume they'd pay the full cost of the policing operation, as other sporting organisations and concert promoters etc., are required to do?

Like their bare knuckle boxing there is big money in these events, another thing I pointed out in AH is that travelers can be smart when they want to be. IE: They are well able to upload video footage and place it on UTube so I wonder how many of them are currently earwigging and participating on Boards,ie :)

    Fine to a point.
Except that it is little other than cruel to race horses in this fashion on a hard road.

Not a lot AFAIK Hilly Bill, except that in places such as Portmarnock Raceway, the presence of ...erm...."culturally oppressive elements",such as DSPCA or,God forbid,Gardai, might make it impossible to fully enjoy a days racing for some folk....;)

Perhaps this lack of cultural understanding by mainstream Ireland forces these poor people into resorting to the only way they can of enjoying a days trotting ...?

Where were the Gardai going to get about 40 members together in riot gear to tackle a very large gang of people with little or no respect for the laws of the state? It would not be possible to get them all to the scene quickly enough to arrest these criminals and even if they somehow managed it they would all be released on very little bail a few hours later.

And...one more, a one way trip in a cattle wagon to Poland, behind a nice Kriegslok 2-10-0 as fuel for the ESB.
