Anyone know anywhere/one selling a decent scales? New or second hand. Needs to be robust and take a load of up to 400lbs. Google searches and usual 'go to' suppliers don't have much.

180kg is possible and depends how accurate you need them to be?

I think I have some details of some companies.

    They can be expensive though.

Depends on how much you are willing to spend are what exactaly you are after. if you are looking for a heavy duty calibrated scales as used in competitions by the IPO and IAWLA ,they use scale made by Avery Berkel , ....will cost a few bob though. €700 and up, depending on spec. will last forever though , we have two in the Hercs and pay about €200 a year to get them calibratated so they are competition legal , hope this helps .

What in the name of God are you going to weigh?

    Maybe ask a butcher?

Boss eye, that sounds good, I'll look them up now. We need a pretty accurate one, though it's not for competition any we've had that could take that load lose their accuracy pretty quickly. We had budgeted about 600 so prob a bit out, worth taking a look.

@Guvnor any links would be great.

@Brian, we have one client who's starting weight in February was 399.6lbs. He's made huge progress (as of yesterday dropping 74lbs) but would love to get more of those clients in the door. It's obviously quite embarrassing to say we don't have a scale to take their weight, and circumference measurements are just a no no for someone that size too.

It's really hard for clients that size to take action in the first place so setting them off on the right foot is the most important part. Quite literally the only thing that's kept his motivation this long is seeing his weekly weigh-ins going down in decent jumps.

I'm sure you've thought of this, but have them stand on two scales as an interim measure? Justify it by saying you're looking for side to side loading imbalances?

I hadn't actually, but I'd imagine they'd see through that one? Also for a couple of seconds they'd be loading their weight on to one or the other, cheaper ones just don't seem to handle that too well.

700 and up I believe. And 200 yearly to keep it calibrated!!

    .

    Jaysus, good work there.

I was serious about the butcher thing though, a supermarket I worked in years ago had one out the back for weighing the meat as it came in. Might be pricey though.

Gold...thanks kevpants that's exactly what I was looking for. We had a similar one before and someone managed to stand on the readout unit instead! Let's just say we don't have much luck when it comes to scales.

Incidentally did I see you in Starbucks dundrum today?

You might as well imo get a scale that goes to 300kg or so.

The accuracy would be 50g or 100g can be as good as 1g or even less but then a lot of cash.

I would get a pallet scale or similar - nice large rubber surface does not look too industrial and as for calibration not required for weighing people.

If weighing food etc. then yes but people no need just get a 5-10kg calibration weight as in accurate plate and this will let you know how accurate or not it is.

    Will get a link tomorrow.

You could have a platform spanning across both scales so they would be evenly loaded from the start. I have seen loadcells used on isometric devices to show the load being exerted, which gives people a figure to aim for, so it could have other uses in a gym.

If people have good quality calibrated plates they can check calibration themselves, obviously not good enough for competition. Even if you have cheapo plates if your scale is newly verified you can dump on say 100kg of plates and keep note of which they were, and what reading they gave. Or bring your home scales to a gym with a good scale and compare side by side.
