Tired of being tired

Please can someone advise me.....my next step is my doctor as I'm running out of ideas!

I am 34 I've always needed about 8 hours sleep a night. I don't smoke, I only drink a few glasses of wine. I run 3 times a week, I am quite fit & I have a fairly good diet. I love my food but I do exercise so I don't see a problem. as I'm not overweight.

I am constantly tired. I get up at 6am during the week for work, this can not be changed. I am a morning person so I don't really mind but by the evening time I am wrecked! Sometimes I am so tired I actually feel sick....I can get narky & grumpy. My body just feels drained.....& all I want to do is lie down. I hate filling up on coffee to be more alert, I shouldn't have to!!!
I have no children so I can't blame them for making me tired ;)
Last night I was so tired I couldn't have been bothered to put on a wash, even though I should have.....I went to bed instead (after a run)

My husband thinks I'm nuts, but he can get by on hardly any sleep at all......4 or 5 hours a night does him.

Could there be something more or am I just a sleepy head?!!

    Thanks.

Go see your GP and get a check-up.

Tiredness (or fatigue) can boil down to many factors or conditions. It could be anything such as Stress, Depression, Lack of Iron (Anemia), Too much Iron (Hemochromatosis), Sugar Sensitivity, Diet, Allergies, Lyme Disease, Crohn's Disease, Exercise Intolerance, Poor Cortisol levels, Multiple Sclerosis, Sarcoidosis, Low B12 levels, Pernicious Anaemia (inability to absorb B12), Hepatitis or even hormonal or neurological disorders. If you've had a large intake of Antibiotics throughout your life so far that can have an impact too.

As the above posters said, go get a checkup and bloods done. If initial bloods show up fine ask you want to look into it further be it by a Neurologist, Hematologist, Immunologist etc. Mention to get checked up for conditions like Pernicious Anemia or Hemochromatosis. Also make a list of any symptoms you experience on a day-to-day basis and give that to the doctor also.

Go see your GP and explain everything you've been feeling to them. Wouldn't hurt to have a comprehensive review of your diet for the days previous to seeing him/her in case there's something that stands out to them straight away.

I'm going to go with the simple, non alarmist solution and ask what a days worth of typical eating is like. The more info which can be provided the better (ie timing, quantity, calories etc).

It could just be something as simple as inappropriate meal time/composition/quantities because I know exactly how you feel, and I can almost always relate it back to my own eating patterns!

    Thanks for the responses.

    Typical Day =

bowl of porridge, glass of Orange Juice & a coffee - this would be between 6am - 7:30am depending on things like who is walking the dog that morning!

mid morning = banana or other fruit & a cup of herbal tea.(nettle or green or something like that)

lunch = wrap/sandwich/salad with a soup or a packet of crisps. I very rarely allow myself white bread but I have had it every day this week except today! I've just realised that!

dinner = home made usually like, chilli con carne or cottage pie....or a stir fry., I try to not use jar/sauces & bulk cook at w/ends....w/ends I would go with steak & chips...or roast chicken, veggies....etc......I get one take away a week & even then I try to be calorie aware! I try to get my veg in by having home made soup & things like that....or with the home made dinners there is always veg thrown in even if it's not in the recipe!

I had a vitamin B something (can't remember) deficiency years ago & had to go on a course of injections......... I fainted which is why I went to doc & she ran blood tests...etc.....

Prob is diet though? I've often wondered if I have a some sort of intolerance towards certain foods....

What times are you eating at? What time do you run at? I assume if you're up at 6am you're in bed 10pm right?

Could it be possible that you are simply not eating enough?

I run a lot myself, and find that I too often get tired... but when I treat myself to a proper big meal I feel replenished, so I figure I could do with shaking up my diet.

Try adding some carbs like oats into your diet. I've always found them great for energy.

I usually run anytime between 7 & 9pm...but only for 1 hour. I wouldnt eat until I get home...would have a snack at 5pm, like a scone or a bit of brown bread.

So you need 8 hours of sleep but never get more than 7 hmmm I wonder what the problem could be.

Yup that was basically going to be my point too.

I think tightening up nutrition and making an effort to get to bed earlier is probably where the solution lies. The latter may be a bit more outside of your control than the former tho :)

I would get a blood test, see if there are any issues.

Hemochromatosis, get checked for this! I had exact same problem when i was 18, found out i had Hemochromatosis, its no big deal really, just means your body absorbs iron very easily, and its described as a celtic disease, loads of irish people have it and dont know about it as its not on a standard blood test, some doctors dont even know about it, can be very serious if not taken care of but when on top of it it dosnt have any effect on your life, so well worth a check, pm me if you want any other info.
