Women are "too old" at 26

I just read the article about poor Miss Ireland being stripped of her crown because she'll be 26 by the time the Miss World pageant comes around and that's considered to be "too old". I'm 24, does that mean to say I have only two years of desirable youth left? Opinions welcome!

Not allowed enter either if you have a kid or are married - regardless of age!

It's one of the rules... Doesn't mean after 26 you are not youthful and desirable!

Exactly and there is no point blowing it out of proportion... Its the rules of the competition...

I don't think you can use the excuse 'young and stupid' after 25, so the 25 age limit is quite appropriate.

Is is a requirement to be stupid to enter it? Didn't think it was...

    You will still be young.

    But passed your peak.

I did a little experiment before and looked at photo's of all my old female friends on facebook and besides one or two, the rest were all much better looking when they where young ie just leaving school.

    Noticeably better looking infact.

The modern photo's of them all around age 28-32 now cant compare to the glow they had as late teens, early 20's.

Try it yourself, its actually fairly sad that we age/ lose that fresh look so quickly.

    Makes you kinda sad.

It's not exactly a requirement but it seems to be the standard. And yeah university education blah blah blah etc. Anybody who can make a serious answer about saving the world and feeding little orphans as miss world/universe/bikini/whatever is at least a bit deluded. I'm not a feminist but no self respecting woman would parade around in bikini (or in whatever if they scraped bikini bit) and be marked like a piece of meat.

    /rant off

And before I'm attacked for cruelty towards Irish models, I would like to add that I have huge respect for good high fashion models and photographers and consider their work art. Posing dressed in bikini at the opening of new sewage plant unfortunately isn't.

    /2nd rant off

I would counter that. Most girls I know look far better now than the photos of them when they were 22 or so.

Although maybe the fashion had a hand in that..........

My mother always told me that there was a difference between youth and beauty. And as terrible as that sounds, I took it to mean that when women are young, they can rely on their youth to keep them beautiful. But as they start to get older, age begins to show who was really beautiful and who was relying on youth. So I actually think that the age limit in most beauty pageants relates back to that - it's more a celebration of youthful beauty as opposed to actual beauty (which for the record - in my experience most truly beautiful women peak in their late 20s/early 30s).

But of course, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

Too old for a beauty contest but young enough to enjoy life without having to weigh yourself everyday, stick to a strict diet and having to look good 24/7.

TBH I think im better looking now aged 32 than what i was aged 18, i do however have better dress sense.

Look at princess diana, she was an ugly duckling but turned into a swan.

Serious reply this time. I think a few years more give you a bit of confidence and self assurance which is way more attractive. In pure natural beauty terms though some 30 years old woman can't compete with a 20 years old girl. And would you want't to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

I think women in their late 20's up are usually far more beautiful than their younger counterparts. Whether that is because they know what are and are not their assets, they know how to dress better, they have that natural confidence that makes women beautiful, or what, but I invariably find older women more beautiful, sexier and more interesting that younger women. Even myself and my friends, we're all hitting 30 this year, and when I look at us now, and then look back to us at 17, 18... We're all better now than then. I'm sure there are women who hit their looks peak at 21 or so, but I do think they're a rare breed.

I think I'm much better looking at 25 than I was at 18. I was never one of those stunning teenagers. It took me a long time to find the right hairstyle and clothes to suit me, plus life events have given me MILES more self confidence than I had when I was 18.

I was messing with one of the guys I work with recently, and we were taking the piss out of each other. He retorted with "Well, I'm only 19, you're 25!", implying that my age was a bad thing. I just looked at him and said "My life is SO much better now than it was when I was a teenager!". Sure, I might be too old to enter the Miss Universe competition, but it honestly doesn't bother me. I know I'm getting better with age, so I don't care what they define as 'young'.

The only thing you're too old for at 26, is being a child.

Being a beautiful teenager and being a beautiful woman are different things, one you can be for a few short years, the other you can be your whole life long. I'm 26 and I don't give a second thought to how I looked as a teen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭RoverZT

    Under 25 peak.

    Over 25 peak.

Confident lot here, everyone is more beautiful now :)

Apologies if this post sounded like a petty complaint, I completely agree that people look better as they get older. They decide what look suits them best rather the trends you may feel you have to follow when you're in school and surrounded by so-called trendsetters. I was just commenting on how Miss World seem to ignore this fact. Basically, it's a policy that seems to say 'get it right before you're twenty-six'.

It doesn't get better than that.

I'm sure she's a great girl, but if you meet her in ten years with a bit of life experience under her belt and the self assurance that brings, she'll be spectacular.

Of course, you're keeping the definitions very narrow, but thats your issue I suspect.

RoverZT, not the kind of post welcomed in the ladies lounge. Thanks.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

I have to disagree. I think as you get older, you learn what suits you. Looking back at photographs of college friends, I think we all have that youthful glow but we lack any sopistication whatsoever. With age, you learn what hairstyles suit you, what clothes suit you, what make-up suits you etc.
I think all of my college friends look better now age 26 than age 20. I also think that the beauty of age gives us wisdom and self-confidence that you can lack at a younger age. To me, that's so attractive.
I believe if look after your skin from the inside and out, you can retain that youthful glow your whole life as I've seen with many ladies.

TBH i think beauty peaks between the ages of 40 and 50. After the age of 50 things go down hill, HOWEVER one can still remain attractive to their male/female counterparts at 50+ a 20 year old might not find a 50 year old attractive, yet another 50 year old could find the other 50 year old VERY attractive.

I, without a doubt, look a lot better than when I was 19/20. The thing that person said about every woman he knows getting less attractive after a set point (made up in his head) is bull but he's just saying it as part of the "Make women over 30 feel sh1t" agenda, propagated by many women themselves to be fair.
Was browsing through a women's mag today and realised after all the "Single over 30", "Childless over 30", "The clock is ticking" articles that this notion is really being pushed - feel sh1t about yourself. I felt a bit depressed briefly tbh, but then forgot about it and back to normal. I don't subscribe to that spiteful crap and I rise above it without much thought, but even I was affected today - must suck for women who take it to heart. I'd advise them not to cave into it though.

I look a bit better than I did when I was 18 but to be honest, thats not saying much.
I don't think the girl was treated unfairly. She chose to lie on her application form, and I think at 25 she is old enough to accept the consquences of her actions.

I'm male and please do not take this as some sort of condescension or looking for thanks post because I can be a mean pr1ck when I want to be. But I've worked in a large facility with several hundred workers for over 25 years. In that time I've seen young girls come in , some still here as mothers 25 years later. It is very apparent that beauty is 90% confidence and that confidence comes when the person is happy in their own skin, happy in their life and comfortable with who they are. You can see it any day. The women who are happy , glow with that happiness and that is beauty...To me there is a distinction between beauty and prettiness. A young girl may be pretty but it takes a self confident women to posses beauty. Not every woman ( or man! ) feels good every day but when they do, it shines. There is no denying it because male and female see it and feel it from the person. I believe beauty is part of aging, a compensation if you like. ;)

Whether I look better or worse now or in the past is genuienly not important to me. I don't pour over photos comparing myself now to my younger self. The most important thing for me right now is that I'm happy with how I look. I walk around in a bikini in the Summer without thinking twice about what others think of me (and I actually feel good) and I look in the mirror most days (bar one or two days before my period) and am happy with what I see. I'm far from perfect but that doesn't bother me. Much more accepting of my faults.

My 18 year old self couldn't have said the same thing and that comes with age. That kind of self-acceptance and not putting such a massive focus on my looks and what people think of me is such a huge weight off my shoulders tbh. I know I've more to offer someone now whereas I didn't feel that way in the past.

The fact that I believe that I'm the kind of person people would like to spend time with because of the life experiences, wisdom and the sense of humour I've accrued over the years feels a much more solid ground to base myself on than on looks that WILL fade eventually.

I Have to say at the age of 26 (I turned 26 two weeks ago aaahhh) I have got a fair few people slagging me that I am single, etc "at my age", etc on the shelf lalalala, little digs like that, I think 26 is the age where it all starts to go down hill unfortunately :-( Hopefully this is not the case, but I do feel old for the first time in my life and it started on my 26th birthday, Sorry to be all doom and gloom! :-) But I do think at 26 I am better looking than me aged 21 where I was immature and didnt have a sense of style, You get older, u lose weight u dress better whiten your teeth, go to gym take care of yourself have more money for clothes but still feel old. Damn it :-)
