bit of a midfield maestro in the jan molby mould myself (well maybe not exact mould, you'd fit about 20 of me in there), can put the ball anywhere you want, but don't expect me to run, tackle or do any of that other crap.

I'd like to think I'm Roy Keane.

    But I'm probably more lucas.

For me (25 years ago :(...) it was the right wing, either as right back or out and out winger. I had great pace and stamina, and a good cross. The only problem for me was cutting inside as my left foot was dreadful.

Cool thread, ruined yet again....to do a Leiva or not?

Was a bit of a Doni myself.

    Centre Forward or attacking midfielder.

When i started playing first i was a left winger....then got slower through injuries so went to left back and finally centre back.

Midfeild warrior, will run and run and run, get stuck into to tackles, and get straight back up again. Just dont expect me to do anything productive with the ball though.

    :D

In fairness though, last time I seen Jan Molby play, he wasn't doing much running either.

I dont get paid for playing football so it would be silly to presume that people I don't know care where I play.

I don't think he _ever_ ran unless the off license was closing :D

But he was amazing passer of the ball.

back in the day probably more often than not right full used to love the tricky wingers as the old saying went they'd get by you the first time but.......
nowadays i get to scream at the players from the sideline in a managerial capacity

Right back all through schoolboy leagues then converted to a tough tackling midfield hardman :pac: at senior level.
    Now I'm a goal machine at 7 a side Astro :D

Played everywhere across midfield from left wing to right wing, settled into the stereotypical AMC from the 4231 formation.

These days when I play its still there, I no longer run however :) I will play the ball anywhere you want, but do not expect me to chase down a ball!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

Very one-footed - left - so always played on the left wing or at left back.

I fancied myself as a sweeper in the Franz Beckenbauer mould, commanding the defence, dribbling into space in the midfield and starting attacks.

Nah, I just hoofed everything the came in my general direction.

I quite like playing out wide. I can't cross and make stupid decisions but I'm fast enough.

    Bit like that Walcott fellow.

I used to be a pretty explosive midfielder in my younger days, all power and pace. Not so much these days, been injured quite a bit in recent seasons.

Prone to the occasional rash tackle too.

I went back to football two months ago after 8 years out so I'm very rusty now. Always played up front. Was pretty handy when I was younger, not so much now :(

My crowning achievement when I was younger was coming on in the last five minutes of a semi final with the school team and scoring a bicycle! We still lost 2-1 :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,416 ✭✭✭Jimmy Iovine

I'm a goal-scoring machine. 6 goals in 5 matches in pre-season this year. Only got 45 minutes in each match as well. Then I got injured in the first game of the season. 5 months out. First game back and I scored after only getting 10 minutes at the end of the match. Haven't done much since to be fair though.

Just a pity that I can't run for longer than 20 minutes really :P.

Ok, I'll be the first to admit I was a bench warmer :(. I'd run all day and tackle anything that moved but that was about it. Pass me the ball and I could do f*** all with it.

Im more of a utility player, started out at center back when I was younger but also played left back for an older team.

Now I mainly play on the wings, left or right which absolutely does my nut in cos I was never fit enough to play 90 mins on the wing and now thanks to injuries i'm even more unfit.

Playing in midfield, especiallly on the wings requires way too much running IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,919 ✭✭✭✭Xavi6

Centre half, strong in the air and deadball specialist but slow as fook.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,019 ✭✭✭davycc

Hmm I started out in 90s as a lightening fast right winger in the 90s with a excellent pinpoint accurate cross...playing 11 aside..

now after numerous injuries im slow and old (31:D) and have found a new position as a DM which I love and I excel there and win the vast majority of tackles/interceptions.and i like to model myself on yaya toure :)

Im playing 7 a side 4 nights a week and wish I was fitter as sometimes I play 6 times a week and Im wrecked after that:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,209 ✭✭✭Redzer7

Left wing back, great control, good skill, set piece taker, good vision and passing.

Not the fastest although I can cope but not very tall. Short tempered which usually leads to bad things.

  • Site Banned Posts: 26,456 ✭✭✭✭Nuri Sahin

Playing 11 a side in college, I play CM. All round passing is my biggest strength as is taking set pieces, be it free kicks or corners. Have played occasionally LW this past season though and done alright. Pretty good both with left or right foot.

But overall, think Xabi Alonso.. I wish :P

I play football for money (FAS course FTW!) under the Ireland U17 women's manager. He has nicknamed me Carlos Tevez only I'm without the pace. I could have done quite well for myself if I wasn't so slow. :(

I'll play up front or in the centre.

    pre 30's

    Post 30's

In all seriousness, played striker in earlier days and winger/striker in Junior soccer in mid-20s. Like playing midfield nowadays pullin strings instead of breaking my hole with runs. Let the ball do the work and all that.

    Supa-Keeper
    Van Der Saar type :)
My buddies say I was sh1t at crosses though!
But I got away with murder because I knew my limitations.

What drives me mental is guys who can't trap cement and would struggle to pass the ball 5metres accurately, look up and try a Glenn Hoddle 60 yarder that they never ever ever make.
"Sorry about that" they say (everytime)
    Muppets!!!

Started out as a right-back around 7 or 8 years old and did pretty well at it but tore my hamstring when I was 12 and that did any pace I had. I haven't played in a proper team for about ten years.

Now, my best position is as an attacking midfielder. My fitness is ****ed, too much drink and fags and I can't run very quickly. However, I have an amazing pass and I pull off the fancy balls more often than not. I have a pretty good footballing brain and always get my head up to look for the best options. I'm pretty good at delivering free-kicks and corners. I can also pull off a few fancy tricks

That said, I'm not a good finisher, I'm a poor dribbler and I'm probably the laziest person on the pitch. Also, if someone barks at me for not chasing the ball or tracking back, I laugh at them.

I'd be a terrible player to have on a serious team. When I play, I do it for fun. Playing is always about the fun for me, I don'T have any competitive side in football and I pity the people who get really worked up when playing football 'cause it's all just a bit of fun to me.

    Centre Half.

Having a much better season than last year and made it to a UCFL Shield Final on Saturday.

    Pace, strength and tackling.

I am not so much about the technique these days.

I started as a keeper and won awards for that, but I lost interest and quit best part of a decade ago (Feel like lots longer). Haven't gone back to a club since but did fall back in love with the sport. I've played RB, LB, LW, RW in kickabouts but I'm now firmly cemented as a DM. I can intercept well and hit loads of passes, but I've very little pace.

You're what, 17/18/19? You quit when you were 7/8/9?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,704 ✭✭✭G.K.

Yeah, so the awards were probably not indicative of ability as such.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,825 ✭✭✭Mikeyt086

I played the entirety of last season as a striker, target man mainly, hit a good few goals. Then I played the entirety of this season as a goalkeeper, which is where I played from ages 6-14 (when I quit to concentrate on the school rugby team, regret that so much) and would consider that my best position. Would like to think I have good close control, good in the air and a decent shot but no pace what so ever when up front. Good reflexes, exceptional handling but not the best positioning when in goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,658 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

historically a rb/cb. since i started playing again about 2 years ago, most people i play with arent very good, so ive been pushed into the midfield. box to box midfielder for about 10 minutes before i collapse in a heap.
Still better as a defender though

Played everywhere really ST, RM, RB, CM, DM, emergency LB. Was mainly a lone striker when I was younger, pacy, agile, an eye for goal, couldn't head the ball for s**t though

I was under the impression that was a given?

Also, has anybody at any stage said they are good? In fact, almost everyone has given reasons as to why they are not good, or talked down on themselves.

This thread should not be taken seriously. Fair play to you however, you came in to a thread where people are talking about themselves and felt the need to remind everyone that they are crap. High 5 bro!

I was a superb keeper in playschool overseas, then life got in the way...
Hoping for a late comeback like Doni.... fly goalie.
