Compared to other Saorview-approved STB's, it is good value.

A friend of mine reserved one. When he went to collect it he was told the website price was an error & it should be €70. He didn't take it.

I had mine reserved and used the kiosk in store today to pay for it today (around 1.30pm). No issue at all and paid what I reserved it for i.e. advertised price of 49.99.

No mention of that in the Argos website.

    No. Recording via usb.

    No. Recording via usb.

TheDriver tells the truth on both counts.

It took a few seconds the first time I tried to do live pause, but after that it was instantaneous.

No. I've got the Ferguson Ariva 120, which does all i want, in the main tv. I found a box on dealextreme last October that does the DTT for me in one of the bedrooms. I'm just looking out for a decent box foe another family member who is interested in DTT only.

You shouldn't post that the Argos box doesn't offer recording based solely on reading the website.

Others did the same about the Lidl receiver & I daresay put a few people off buying one.

Argos Carlow had one on display in the store today with a sign for €49.99

A little off topic, but Hardly Normal are having a Marquee Sale this wk/e. They are flogging the Finlux saorview box for €50.Model SAO634 STB T8010.

He reserved it at a different store in Limerick & got it at 49.99. Strange!

Back up @ €49.99 on the Argos site as part of their Summer clearance.

Has been that price for a while now, got one about 2 weeks ago in Limerick.

When I went to the till to pay there was a message on-screen saying the €49.99 was an error and it was actully €70. When I said that was the price in the in-store catalogue she just walked over to the shelf and picked one up and scanned it in no problem. Is this a bit of a scam with Argos, maybe the customer won't question the price?

Is the Argos box (Alba) any good? Has anyone had any issues with them? Thinking of getting one tomorrow.

Got my wife to pick one up in Athlone today, came home from work had it running in minutes, gonne try the recording facility in the next hour and will post ease of use. So far looks excellent value for €50.

HDMI cable included in the box also ;)

Picked mine up last Saturday. Easy to connect. Same system as a walker my mother got, remote and on screen display is the same. I have recorded on mine and seems fine. It doesn't give an indication of signal strength but what do you expect for €50!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,680 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

signal strength is in settings and installation.

I notice dunnes have the TV star for sale

It does just what your Saorview tv already does. Tunes in Saorview signals only. Has usb pvr function also.

    whats the pvr function for?

A PVR function allows features similar to Sky+, live pause and record, however all the current boxes only have 1 tuner meaning unless your TV is Saorview compatable you can only record the channel you are watching and not record one channel while watching another. In the next year or so a true Saorview PVR will be launched that will allow recording of one channel while watching another channel and allow series link etc. If you already have a Saorview compatable TV I would wait for such a box to be launched.

To record with the Argos box you need to seperately buy an external hard drive which is probably 50 to 100 Euro extra for any reasonable recording time.

I got two 32GB USB for €24 on Living Social. Works fine for me with up to 18HRS recording time.

I wouldn't bank on that ! At the rate Saorview and in particular products from the manufacturers are being developed, it could be a lot longer. A Saorview pvr with series link should be well available by now, we're only four months from switchoff for God's sake ! But no, this is Ireland, we don't do things in a hurry.

Do I need an ariel for Saorview ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 302 ✭✭GiftGrub100

Yes, you need an aerial to receive Saorview. If you currently get RTE channels on an aerial, you should be able to get Saorview.
