The Boards Top 100 - Discussion Thread

Was watching NFL Network's Top 100 of 2012 and it got me thinking, now that the draft is over and we have time to kill, lets get working on an official AF Forum Top 100 players.

How it works - PM me your top 25 players in the NFL today. This is not based on how they performed last year like the NFL Network one is, it's based on what you think their true, current ability is. It's up to you what importance you want to give certain positions on the field, that's one of the results that will be interesting.

Your #1 ranked player will receive 25 points, your #2 ranked player will receive 24 points and so on. I'll reveal the Top 100 gradually, as NFL Network are doing, i.e. in batches of 10. Just a bit of fun, but it would be cool if as many people as possible could vote.

Not going to put a deadline on this, just going to see what the response is over the next few weeks. And of course this whole process is open to suggestions so please feel free. What do you think?

That's a huge amount of work for you to do with counting names from pms

Would putting up a google doc/spreadsheet online that we can all access be easier
We'll all type into it and you can sort and filter

Its not much hassle really. I use excel every day at work so I know a few shortcuts to present it in spreadsheets pretty easily. The only problem I think would be whether or not we'll get 100 different players nominated. Hopefully we do, if not I'll round it off to the nearest 10, ie 90, 80 etc.

Just to narrow down the grading a bit more - basically a player is only judged as if he will be needed for one season without factoring in injuries?

Yup pretty much, although I'd factor in injuries to a certain extent (ie not that he'd be anywhere near a top 25, but Bob Sanders - while very talented - can't do anything anymore because of injuries). But that's only an extreme case, I don't think it applies to many contenders in this. For Peyton Manning, I guess people can assume he's healthy again.

I would include Manning - by all accounts he's reported to be pretty much 100%. If you want to take into account the ability he had the last time we saw him play for the Colts and also factor in a year's worth of rust having not played, that's fine. He's a bit of a special case so his current ability is up to your own interpretation of how you think he is right now.

yeah I got to my 25, but then would have taken me longer to order them so left it as it was. had the main ones in the order I wanted. altho 10-25 are a bit all over the place and would even argue with myself that some should be higher/lower than they are!

I've got my top 8. But my god how do you differentiate the rest. Maybe i should do the last 8 and see what i have left

Also feel free to edit/update your list as often as you want until no more votes are being taken. Have received 5 lists already, with 4 different #1s. That's the best part of this

Hardest job was who to leave off. So honourable mentions to Justin Tuck, Vince Wilfork, Jimmy Graham n Chris Johnson

my biggest problem was I probably let the heart rule the head in that I picked players I like even if they may not be the best at their position.

God that was hard. Shows why such problems over top 100.

Much easier to rank in position.

Has to put Rivers over Eli but that was the only heart over head pick.

Some stats so far, without spoiling things.

Of the 14 lists submitted so far, there have been 72 different players nominated.
Of those 72, only 4 players have featured on all 14 lists so far.
59% of players nominated play on offence, with the remaining 41% on defence.
25 players have only featured on one list. The highest ranked of these players was 8th on his list.
Each of the current top 5 players have been voted the best player in the NFL by at least 1 person.
Numbers 1 and 2 are separated by - wait for it - 1 single point with 331 and 330 points respectively (out of a possible 350 so far).


I would appreciate it if no one spoiled their picks in here and just wait it out for the big reveal

Wow its so difficult to cut down my list to 25, I did up a list of the top 8 at each position (I cheated a bit by just ranking eight linemen!) but its so hard to find 25!

• Of a possible 575 points, the 1st and 2nd ranked players have 547 and 540 respectively.
• Only 3 players have featured in all 23 lists.
• Of the 81 players nominated so far, there are 4 rookies.
• The highest rated of these rookies lands at number 34 on the list.
• 11 Quarterbacks, 11 Running Backs and 13 Wide Receivers feature on the list.

Of course, all the above can and will change with each submission that comes in. Keep 'em coming folks

Wow...thats kinda shocking, you'd think it'd have to be Brady, Rodgers & Brees. But surely everybody has Polamalu, Ray Lewis, Revis, AP, Megatron, etc also.

Should I stop speculating till the results are in or will it ruin it?

I dont have some of those you mentioned. I think I let personal opinion and a general dislike of a player or thinking he is over rated cloud my judgement!

Yeah, I'd be surprised if Ray lewis was in the top 25 to be honest.

Bitter. I'm a Giants fan and can find space for one Jet. That said it is personal choice

I hadn't sent my list at that point when i posted that...i didnt realise how difficult the task was.

I did the list last night, the guys i mentioned who i thought were sure things, barely made my list in the end


I was even thinking of trolling by putting in a random LS as my 25th player just so he'd turn up in the top 100 players (since we prob wont make 100 distinct players) but i had to cut my initial list of 35 real players down to 25, i had no room for trolling.

just did my list, i find it really difficult to compare positions and offense v defense.

i would probably do a different list if i had to do it again...

I haven't had a chance to tally up today's submissions (there were loads - fair play!) but I have checked to see what new players have been nominated....

We're up to 97 players nominated which I think is amazing!! :eek:

From how many submissions? Think this list will spark a fair few arguments

I'll have to double check the exact amount but there's definitely been over 30 so far, probably closer to 35.
