    Q-Con is back!

We’re ready to take Belfast by storm once again with a whole weekend of gaming in all its forms.

Whether you’re into video games, tabletop roleplay, wargames, LARP, anime, TCGs or comics this is going to be the event of the year for you! We’ll have hobby fans from all over the UK and Ireland coming to compete in competitions or just chill out and meet like-minded people.
Q-Con is now into its nineteenth iteration and we’ve done nothing but grow on our journey, with our event in 2011 having an unbelievable 1700 people in attendance over the course of the weekend. Tickets to Q-Con sell out less as a matter of “if” but “when”, so make sure to pre-order as soon as possible!

Every year, the event is organised and staffed entirely by a group of gaming fans from the Queen’s University gaming society, Dragonslayers. Q-Con is very much for the fans, by the fans and we love the games we run just as much as the attendees love playing them. We have competitions and casuals of all forms of gaming, as well as a range of anime-themed events (the biggest of which being the cosplay masquerade, allowing keen costumers to strut their stuff on stage) and talks from special guests. It’s not all about us, though; we also host fund-raising events for local charities.

We started off as a collection of hobbyists having a few mates around for some gaming and some fun and we’d like to think that, despite playing host to nearly 2000 people – many of which will be new faces – we haven’t lost the atmosphere of a group of like-minded fans spreading the love of geek culture and generally having a bit of a laugh. No matter who you are, whether you’re tall, short, thick, thin, vampire (sparkly or otherwise), werewolf, orc, dragon, zombie, pirate, ninja or just from down the road, you’re invited to come along and enjoy the craic!

Q-Con XIX is blasting into the Queen’s University Belfast Students’ Union from the 22nd to 24th of June, 2012. Pre-registration is available online and by post at a reduced rate of £15 (on the day weekend registration is £20, or £10 for a one-day pass) and we recommend pre-registration to avoid disappointment. We also offer local accommodation at just £19 a night. More information can be found on our website at http://www.q-con.org.uk

'sup guys, just figured I should probably do an "official" post since I'm doing online PR now!

It goes without saying that I've stacked a lot of fighting games into the schedule this year! :D

Yup, my bad - forgot to include the Ultimate in the title! I'll fix that later.

Would've been nice not to have to spread it out over the weekend, but there's simply too many games worth having tournaments for to do that! :(

can i get into the AE tournament without registering online for q con? can i just get there and pay there for entrance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭Vyze

Yup you can register on the day, although I'd recommend pre-registering for Q-Con since we do tend to sell out. :)

Registration for each tournament must be done on the day.

Just out of interest what kind of prizes do the winners of the fighting game (AE) tournies get, or is it just for fun?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 567 ✭✭✭Vyze

Entry for tournament video games is £1 and the prizes are a collection of cool stuff from our sponsors. There's usually gift vouchers for local electronics shops too. Other than the Zen Utd prize pack that's being sent to my house first, I don't really get time to sort through the prizes in advance, sadly!

ladnopoka - sadly the official accomodation is 18+, but there's loads of nearby hotels that'll be able to sort you out. Haven't stayed in any of them myself, though, so I couldn't recommend any specific one.

Congrats to Xanfel for winning the UMvC3 tourney at Q-con yesterday!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭Doyler01

    Results??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,762 ✭✭✭Yreval

    SC5 - SADX
    UMVC3 - Xanfel
    Skullgirls - Yreval
SFxT - not sure, who cares anyway?
Blazblue EX - not too sure, but I believe his name was Liam Meehan (is this you, Nutrient?)
    SFIV2012 - Roogle

I'll have more thoughts on Q-Con later, and probably some pics and vids too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Xanfel

I'm just gonna put it out there

I didn't really deserve to win Marvel. It's just lucky for me that Lythero was cursed by a gypsy woman to never beat me, and that Phoenix Wright is apparently the scourge of all.

    That is all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 561 ✭✭✭Lythero

It was either that, or she cursed me to only ever achieve second place at Marvel

All I did was burn one of their caravans. It wasn't THAT big a deal.

Also I have a couple of videos of the UMvC3 and AE finals. I'm making a big collab vid of the convention but after it's up I could just upload the finals on their own.

how many ppl entered Marvel and AE2012?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Sairus

And how many for Skullgirls? Many decent players?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Xanfel

For Marvel, I'm pretty sure there was an even 16 or so. 4 pools blahdeblah.

AE had a slightly larger turnout, i think. Either that or just a larger spectator crowd - I'd guess around the mid 20s?

Skullgirls - I didn't even see it being played. Which is a crying shame, since it's a great game. I think at that point I was trying to get on the Rock Band stage :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,762 ✭✭✭Yreval

    OK, here goes;

    - Won the Skullgirls tourney, which I'm happy with, but I'm not so happy with the turnout (5 players) and the skill level (I won 15 consecutive games (I think) to win the tournament, none of which were even close - am I seriously the only remotely competent SG player in NI?)
    - In case you aren't already aware, Garou is hype as hell. Also, you can't not love this music.
    - Console gaming occupied two floors this year, with some of the tabletop games moved to the nearby Elmwood Hall. With attendance reaching 2200 this year (up around 400 from last year) this was a much-needed expansion.
    - This game was on one of the 360s on Saturday evening. Yes, I played it. Yes, it was about as good as you'd expect it to be.
    - Massive thanks to the Q-Con committee for another great weekend of gaming.

On to the pics: (click to embiggen, full set here)

This Guilty Gear fanart won a prize in the art contest:

I also recorded some video footage, which should be going up soon. Oh, and for 2gen, there were 21 entries for AE2012.

If I had of known the games were getting treated better I would have come... the "nerfing" is the reason I haven't gone for the last couple years.

Not that that is your fault, Yreval! :)

Nerfing in what way? We didn't run things to full-on tournament standards (e.g. it was only single-elim after groups) due to general time and equipment restraints but I've made an effort each year to try and run the games better and better. Shame to hear that someone thought the games were being treated badly in previous years.

Not sure if I'm doing it next year, though!

Last year you pretty much told me the upper echelons of the people who ran Q con weren't happy with SSF4 and the time it took, and that was part of it getting squashed into a small tournament then... which led to me not going (I don't mind travelling at all for tournaments, but it sounded like a lot of money for little gaming)!

Was great craic. Ended up sleeping in for the BlazBlue tournament on Sunday morning since it was at 10am for sign ups and I went to sleep at 8am from Monkey Business the night before! :P

Go Team FGT! :P 2nd Place in Halo, despite running around like headless chickens for most of the games trolling.

By squashed, it was still groups into brackets, it was just single elim instead of double.

Last year some things ran on due to certain staffing issues which were ironed out this year. Thankfully due to ungodly amounts of planning, no tournaments ran over their expected times this year, although a networking issue did cause MW3 and GOW3 to start a little late. Then again last year SSF4 had a much bigger turnout, this year the fighting games just simply weren't as popular as they had been previously. I don't know if this is people getting bored of Marvel/SF4/BB or whatever, but when Naruto Generations has a comparable amount of entrants and creates infinitely more hype and interest than the normal fighters, something's up.
