I can recommend the mits. I find them pretty good.

The lightweight yellow/white jackets are great. I've one of them for the last two years and its only fading now.

Great as a windbreaker/light rain jacket.

How does the chiminea fit on the bike?

Anyone purchased the minI pump before?

Grand for the price. I have one as a back up to my Co2 cartridges in my bag for commuting to work( I also have a good BBB mini pump for training) . Got about 80 psi at a push one day(hard work). Get the track pump as well if your getting it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭Redmond101

Is the track pump any good, havent got one at the moment?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,440 ✭✭✭cdaly_

At €7 I would avoid the track pump. Haven't tried the Aldi one but the one I got in Lidl a couple of years ago was utter crap. You'll get a reasonable trackpump for under GBP20 on CRC.

+1 - I recently bought the Lidl one and the gauge never worked, which rendered it a bit useless.

Aldis return policy is rather good. I'd give it a go for the price.

I had a pump for a year and a half and it was grand. Broke eventually though but I'd buy one again if I hadn't got a fancier one already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,969 ✭✭✭hardCopy

The panniers could be great value, and I just paid over 6 times the price for a set.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,867 ✭✭✭Tonyandthewhale

Half tempted to give the panniers a go, probably too cheap to be true though. Just how good is Aldi's policy on returns?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,136 ✭✭✭del88

Panniers could be grand...would still use a dry bag with them to be sure..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,867 ✭✭✭Tonyandthewhale

I'd be more worried about them falling apart within a week than them letting a bit of wet in (which is sort of a given at that price).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,207 ✭✭✭a148pro

Any thoughts on the bike computer or the saddle gel thing?

My last bike computer from either Lidl or Aldi was utter pants and broke after two uses.

Been tempted by the gel thing as I experience pain / genital numbness even in padded shorts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,456 ✭✭✭Icepick

Don't buy a plastic pump as a rule.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 406 ✭✭denlaw

i bought the long sleeve cycling tops , the winter fleece top and the leggings last aug/sept from aldi and used them all winter , still in perfect nick , i'm having one of those light jackets :D:D

Saddle covers aren't really a proper solution, they can cause more movement and chafing and could make numbness worse. Better bet is to go on Youtube and work on your bike fit. Shorts, a decent saddle and a well-fit bike is all most people need.

Does anyone know what the bike helmets are like? Quality etc...

I got the soft shell jacket 2 years ago and it's still going strong. Picked up the ultra light jacket last year, really handy since it packs down so small.

Any thoughts on the shorts? What's the padding like?

If they're the same as the ones from last time I don't really like them, the padding is fine but they are a very weird shape in the groin area. Way too much extra material for me anyway, I definitely knew I was wearing a sub-standard product.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,696 ✭✭✭thesimpsons

I don't think much of the shorts either - weird padding or something. just doesn't sit right. their jerseys and jackets are great though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,524 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

I bought the track pump before and it lasted about 5/6 months. A €20-25 track pump from CRC/wiggle is a lot lot better.
If you need a saddle bag and some tools, you can't really go wrong with the bicycle tool bag for €5.99.
I have a couple of pairs of the cycling gloves and I find them grand. Again, ideal if you new to cycling and don't have any gloves.

! So glad I saw this. Just got a bike, and the lock it came with is too small to attach the front wheel and the frame. Kinda has me worried. Plus it has no basket or luggage rack. Now I can get a basket + some tools + a lock for cheaper than just the basket would be in other stores.

Thanks for the heads up :D I'm happy!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Emmm unless you were locking in a secured car park in work and even then I would avoid that lock to be honest. Cheap locks are a waste of money.

Have a look at this. Its in dutch but the subtitles are in english, but gets the point very effectively across.

    Get this at least!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 ydol

Oh I know this kind of lock can easily be cut open with the right tools, but my bike is an inexpensive second hand one. I think if there is no lock on it it might get stolen, but with a lock, no one will bother coming with pliers to cut it off or anything -- doubt it'd be worth the thief's time!

Have a look at the stolen bikes thread here. Everything that can be shifted off for a quick 20 at the market will be stolen. Guaranteed. And its not just the right tools - A decent snips that can slip in a pocket can rip through the cheap cable 'locks'

Insanely busy in the Rathmines one this morning, much worse than the last few Lidl sales I've been at. Managed to snatch a computer, mini pump and the light jacket. Won't be anything left in a few hours unless they have more stock.

Nuts in Galway too. People buying 3 4 5 of the soft cell jackets and jerseys. Very little left at 9.15.

Feck I was going to get one of them. Better make my way to Aldi so pronto.

Parnell Street has been practically cleaned of the soft shell jackets, seems to be good stock of almost everything else. I picked up socks and the bag. I had no intention of getting the bag, but am happy enough with it. I got the sports bag; big enough, one external pocket, decent straps, well shaped back with breathable harness and a rain cover. Handy enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,718 ✭✭✭AstraMonti

It was insane in Sandyford as well, people where diving in the baskets to grab whatever they could lol. I got the bbq, I expected it to be bigger :(

If its the Headford Rd branch you mean, even less there at 9:25!

Two soft shell jackets left - Ladies (S) and Mens (XL)! All helmets were gone too when I arrived but while I was there they were topped up twice and when I was leaving they were all gone again! These jackets and the helmets were the most popular items - plenty of everything else there.

There are either more and more people getting into cycling or the people that are already into cycling have a fetish for buying more and more gear!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 430 ✭✭bren_mc

very busy in Parnell street as well. not many of the jerseys or jackets left. having said that, a friend of mine was looking for one of the helmets (which had also disappeared completely) but a guy that works there told her they had loads more helmets out the back but just couldn't get near the shelf to restock them. so maybe that's the case with some of the other stuff too?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

I'm hoping a midlands rural Aldi will have most of the cycling gear left :)

    Drogheda South side mad.

The fingerless mitts seem to be very good quality, as do the soft shell jackets.
The mini pump looks to be good value.
The"track" pump looks very very flimsy and plasticy. I cannot imagine how you would get 100psi out of it. I would avoid, apart from blowing up air mattresses.
The led lights are cheap and seem to be of reasonable quality.
The saddle bag(small) looks like good value.
I was there at 9.00am. I would say, there's very little left by now.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,696 ✭✭✭trad

Got the panniers, seem reasonably good quality for the price. Lets see what the rain brings but there are rain covers with them. Sandyford was pretty busy at about 09.30. Can see much being left.

Please keep these shop updates coming, I'm going to try and forage for stuff later tonight would be nice to be able to eliminate some spots ahead of time.
    No sneaky false reporting either!

I got some stuff last time around. The lights were okay, but the attachments to hold them to your bike are terrible. The plastic was too brittle and they just cracked apart and did not hold correctly. One front light I got was DOA. The rear lights are a similar size and design to the Smart type rear lights, but the Smart lights are not much more really. If you already have the attachments on your bike from a previous light, or a loop to put the new light on, then these rear lights would be worthwhile. I got the cycling mitts and they are grand.

If those rain jackets are actually any good, what the hell are cyclesuperstore and bicycle line (which is budget line of clothing!) doing looking for 100 for one, and having it on "special offer" on wednesday for 60 quid??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 659 ✭✭✭ToadVine

Aldi Naas was also crazy. There was a queue at 8.45, and people were like vultures when they got inside. The softshell jackets were gone in about 5 minutes and there was only one helmet left when I was leaving at 9.10.

I managed to grab a helmet and 2 softshell jackets (L and XL) btw, so fairly happy with myself :)

Still loads of stuff in clonee just outside blanchardstown if anyone is interested

Just bought the large saddle bag. At last i found something cheap which will hold a couple of tools, co2 and 2 spare tubes . Didn't buy anything else, as much as i would have liked another jersey or jacket cause i have been threatened with divorce if i bring home any more "junk"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,190 ✭✭✭Dublinstiofán

How do the panniers attach to the carrier? Will they go on any kind of carrier?

Just back from the Athlone one had plenty of nearly everything except for the base layers and only a few bags. Just got a few pairs of the socks and two pairs of mitts. They're slightly different from the pair of I've got nearly 3 summers out of but hopefully as good. Nearly got the large sport bag seemed pretty decent but I think I'll save my money for a dueter one. Jerseys actually looked pretty good but they're loose fitting not good for my slimmer build and any way just picked up my new set of club gear aswell which is so much nicer :D and better fitting so really don't need to be buying more kit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,004 ✭✭✭coolemon

Got an odd pair of panniers as they were all that were left.

One is like a knock off version of a back roller ortelieb. It has the same material and roll back clips as an ortelieb and so feels like very good quality. It even has a rain cover that opens up from below. It looks really waterproof given this, but the stiching between the plasticky fabric and the side fabric (like an ortelieb) is not as good as an ortelieb). But for 14.99???? Unbelievable value.

The other is more box shape and dosnt appear to be as waterproof. But it has pull out watercover like the one above.

Both have the same clip system. Two clips and two velcro straps. Id say they would be very secure if on a rack.

I cant get over the price of the ortelieb knock off though. Aldi stuff seems better quality and better value than Lidl stuff.

Saddle bag is great value aswell. Bigger, and I think cheaper, than the Lidl one last time.

30 mins ago and Nutgrove still had most items and they were constantly restocking while I was there. Mens light weight jackets seemed to be running low but there may have been more in the stockroom.
