    Hey all

This might seem like a silly question but is the handlebar moustache a symbol for anything in gay community?

    Thanks!

    Not that I'm aware of

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I belive it may have been the steroype of a gay mans style of facial hair from the 1970's and may be connected to the Tom of Finland image! But today god no! And i hope it doesnt come back into fashion!

Cool thanks! I had a discussion with a lecturer about moustaches the other day (you don't wanna know) and she said that by using a moustache symbol I could be offending the gay community. After hours of research (and no result) I thought I would ask here! So thanks again :)

I have heard of the association of the handlebar moustache with gay people. It's like a gay stereotype, the leather-clad biker with a handlebar moustache. Think the Village People or the Blue Oyster bar from Police Academy.

Academic people sometimes fall danger to over analyzing or over symbolizing things.

Another example, by Charlie Brooker in a column where he posits that Star Wars was a gay parable:

"It's hard to see how they could make Star Wars any gayer, unless they gave the Millennium Falcon a handlebar moustache."
