Good stuff. Was that a replacement to a lost/expired card or was it just sent out?

lol probably knowing BOI. Just at least we know now they're rolling them out. I think end of the year everyone should have a replacement.

I just rang up there and had it confirmed that they are being rolled out. Its been done branch by branch but the guy wouldn't say when my branch would have its turn.

There's more info on the website now... Looks snazzy:

Nice! Just out of curiosity - are there many stores / terminals accepting contactless payments already?

Just got my Visa debit card today. Went looking on the interweb for acceptance points for contactless - apparently the "Bord Gais" theatre has the first terminal and Centra will roll them out from next month. Long way from Maine, though :p

I got mine today too!!! got my entry in for the competition already ha ha.
are the people who got it staff or not? (if your willinig to admit such a thing on here ;) ) a mate works there and told me they were due to get it this month just interested to see if there is a pattern emerging as to who is getting it now and who will be waiting

Also, apparently it's by branch so of anyone is ok with saying what branch I'd be interested to see that too. I understand if people don't want to say.

What number would i ring to ask when my branch will be getting them, or should i call ym branch? I know it's probably pointless, but i'm fed up waiting at this stage.

I rang Banking 365 and was told he didn't have the schedule available. So it's probably pointless you asking. If you find out, let us know.

Just realised my own card expires shortly, hopefully this will precipitate the issue of a new Visa debit card.

As far as I can see there's a transaction fee of 28 cents for each contactless card payment? Why would you pay an extra 28 cents for each small transaction you do? 10 transactions per week would be €145 euros per year for the 'convenience'.

    Charges

Edit: Waiver until April 2013 as indicated by copacetic.

"Contactless transaction fees for domestic transactions and transactions in euro within the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway will be waived up until 30th April 2013."

    Edit 2:
It looks like Bank of Ireland charges 28 cent for laser transactions already so if you're replacing laser transactions with this card the charge is the same.

Personally I won't be using it (post April) for small-value purchases at that rate.

And I presume if you meet the free banking terms and conditions you wont have to pay after this date either (if the T&C's still apply then)

Over three grand in the bank? Sorted!

Anyone else get their cards? I haven't got mine yet, was told in March that it would take 6 months or so to get them out!

I've been using a BOI laser card for years and can't ever remember being charged for a transaction.

Is this 28c charge not just for the retailer??

No, part of their normal fee schedule for customers. If you qualify for free banking, however, you wouldn't see them.

I was in my local branch making a lodgement using the automatic deposit machine and my Laser Card got jammed in the machine's card reader!

It seems the back of the card had a rough patch, just behind the chip.

They recovered the card and ordered me a shiny new Visa Debit card instead.

So, hopefully I'll have one in a few days!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

Just rang and asked for a new Visa Debit card there. Said i was having issues with my Laser and they said it will be with me in 6-8 days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭Solair

Mine took well over 5 working days to arrive.
I think they're obviously doing a major re-issue and are a bit slower than usual. Replacement cards normally didn't take that long.

They have Verified by Visa security on the cards too. So, apparently you'll be prompted to activate that the first time you make a transaction on a website that uses it.

Your Laser Card will continue to work until you activate your Visa Debit card.
To do that, just use it in a Bank of Ireland ATM.

Once you do that, their network will cancel your old Laser card.

how safe will these contactless cards be? if you dont have to enter a pin when paying couldnt a thief simply go on a spending spree with your card if your wallet is stolen?

It seems to be limited to €15, then if there are multiple transactions (I think it's 4 transactions) it will prompt for a pin.

The worst you could be done for is 4 X €15.

So, just think of it as having €60 in your wallet as cash and report the card as lost/stolen if it goes missing a.s.a.p.

You're also supposedly covered by the banks' fraud guarantee once you've reported the card lost/stolen.

The card can also only be activated in very close proximity to the reader (<5cm) so you can't really just skim them either and you would need a Visa terminal to process the transaction and get paid and the data transmitted is useless for creating a fake card.

how does BOI visa debit compared to UlsterBank visa debit in terms of charges?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭Toboldlygo

Anyone who wants wants one of these new cards should report their existing card lost, provided Bank of Ireland don't charge an arm or a leg to get a new card, that is! It might be worth any charge anyway for the benefits that come with the new card.

They will have switched off the issuing of Laser cards and will replace Laser cards with Visa cards if requested!

My sister's Laser card stopped working around two weeks ago in the ATM for some reason so she ordered a new card which took a while to arrive and she got a Visa debit card as its replacement. She wanted me to take it into the bank as they had sent her a "credit card" she thought until I explained the Debit part and how it was just like Laser.

Laser cards will be no loss and they were a typically Irish stupid invention which spawned a whole set of problems and practically helped popularise the pre-pay credit card, I imagine demand for pre-pay credit cards will nose dive with Debit card you can actually use online properly now.

The situation in most of Europe was quite similar until quite recently i.e. national debit card schemes that didn't work abroad and weren't interoperable. There are still some in use.

What's driven Laser Card's demise has been an EU directive requiring card interoperability and the fact that Visa Debit is more net-friendly.

Maestro allowed some limited interoperability but it was mainly just for ATM and physical chip and pin transactions. E.g. you could use a Laser card quite effectively in a Maestro compatible terminal. I've even used mine in tram ticket machines in France without problems.

What let Laser down very badly was that it was never particularly online friendly. It only worked in places that specifically accepted Laser, rather than Maestro.

Many sites that claim to accept Maestro in the UK were actually only ever configured to accept British-issued Switch cards, which was a Laser-like scheme that is also largely being abandoned.

Same with other sites that might only accept German-issued Maestro etc.

What about new customers? I'm considering moving to BOI due to my employer also having a BOI account, but I really don't want to give up my existing Visa Debit card to be given a laser...?

They're no longer issuing Laser. It's extremely unlikely that they'd give one to a new customer.

Recieved my new card in the post yesterday morning. While it should be handy for shopping online, I don't know of any retailers that have the NFC technology in place. Has anyone seen them in the wild?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,230 ✭✭✭Solair

There are a few major retail chains launching the contactless terminals later this summer!

BWG Foods who operate Spar, EuroSpar, Mace, and XL brands are rolling it out to all of their stores.

    http://www.techcentral.ie/article.aspx?id=18674

Musgraves seems to be actively doing the same too.

    Centra : http://www.musgravegroup.com/en/news/news_article/Centra_announced_as_first_retailer_to_accept_contactless_payments.php

I've spotted the terminals in Easons in Mahon Point in Cork already in place too.

I'd say you'll see pretty widespread adoption of this as apparently the merchant fees are lower for small transactions, at least initially and I think it only involves a change of PIN pad.

The fact that most Irish debit cards will have contactless makes it one of the most widespread rollouts of the technology anywhere. So, you might find that adoption rates will be pretty rapid.

I just hope they make use of it for things like bus payments, parking meters etc.

It would be very easy to integrate Visa/MC NFC payments into the already rolled out contactless systems on bus and Luas.

My VISA debit arrived today. Doesn't say anything about contactless though.

I had forgotten I even had a BoI account. My card was due for renewal in August.

On the one hand I'm delighted because I was just about to switch from AIB to Ulster Bank for a VISA debit. On the other hand the reason I don't usually deal with my BoI account is because I have found they made lots of mistakes in the past.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 india

My lasor card was damaged and I called boi for a replacement card and was told a visa debit card would be sent to me and it would take 8 working days. As if that's not bad enought they are going to charge €5 something for the privilege.

Anyone else get charge for their new visa debit card?

That was the final straw. After 15 years, Bank of Ireland and myself are no more....account closed.

Lads how does it work when buyin online?

Do you just select Visa and enter the card number and expiration date, billing address etc or is there a special option you need to select?

Talking about a site that doesn't have the verified by visa thing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

Visa if Visa Debit isn't listed as an option of its own.

will the visa debit card work as normal in ATM's?

some shops like Lidl & Aldi only accept Laser & not credit card, will the visa debit card work with them?

once i receive mine i think i'll get rid of the credit card and see how i get on with this.

If there's a symbol on the card that looks like the WiFi symbol you'd see on a typical smart phone / iPad or Mac, you've got contactless transaction capability on the card.

Otherwise, it might just be a plain Visa Debit card.

I think if the account's been inactive for a long time, they might not opt to give you a contactless card as you could end up running up OD fees if you used it without funds available.

They have a "Pay as You Go" fees system where its 28c per transaction in or out of your account. No transactions, no fees.

There's less than €10 in the account. If they try and charge fees on that then I'll just close the account and they sing for the fees.

Aldi and Lidi do not only accept Laser - they've accepted Visa Debit for the last few years, not long after Halifax introduced them.

Anyone knows what happens if you don't activate the new visa debit card within 2 months. My new card arrived at home, but I'm away at the moment and won't be back until August so the 2 months will be up. I won't be using my laser card in the meantime so it doesn't matter if it's cancelled, but I'm just wondering if you can still activate the card after the 2 month period?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,264 ✭✭✭JBoyle4eva

I've just realised that after moving a few months ago, I never changed my postal address on my account which I use for my Laser card. Do you reckon my card could've been sent to my old address now? I was a customer in the Maynooth branch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,134 ✭✭✭Lux23

It could well have, ring them and they can cancel it and send you out another one.

It will automatically activate when the 2 months are up & the one you had previous becomes redundant
