    Hi folks,

In April 2011, there were big changes for Electric Ireland: we launched our price plans and began supplying gas. We can't believe it's been a full year, and to mark our one-year anniversary in the gas market, we are giving away a very beneficial health and safety device, a carbon monoxide alarm, to 10 people here on Boards.ie.

Here is the alarm (available at ElectricIrelandStore.ie) and info regarding carbon monoxide and the alarm itself.

Also, check out our price plans, including gas, here.

The competition runs until this time next week, and winners are chosen randomly – all you need to do to enter is post up a safety tip. It can be serious or humorous (try not to stray into unclean territory please though! :p) Competition Terms & Conditions.

    All the best :)
    Electric Ireland team

Signs to look out for in relation to Carbon Monoxide poisoning:

You may observe common flu like symptoms in someone who is actually suffering from Carbon Monoxide inhalation with features like: -
    - ongoing headaches
    - loss of balance
    - fatigue
    - urge to vomit

These symptoms should sound the warning bells. If someone in your family appears like this and you have a gas boiler or other gas appliance such as a gas fire then you should switch it off immediately. Having stopped the cause of carbon monoxide, if you are feeling well, you should also immediately open the doors and windows to improve airflow. During this period all other occupants of the house ought to have been advised to leave and you should follow them immediately. Once you are all out of the house you can then call for a qualified gas boiler engineer, and test for the cause of the problems.

Keep room temperatures at a safe +18c to +22c. Too hot or too cold can be dangerous. If you have elderly neighbours or family check that they have smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and that they are working.

Know the difference between fire extinguishers and at least have a multipurpose one. If you have teenagers, regularly check that the fire extinguisher has not been in recent use at a foam party.
