I don't know about the Ballybane reservior - but the area just below it is indeed the Ballybane Community Organic Garden. Fenced all round, not in allotments AFAIK.

There are apartments in that spot in Renmore. They look kinda institutional, but there was no sign outside when I looked. I assumed that they were related to GMIT, but I guess a convent is possible too. And I have been told recently that the Sisters of Mercy have 40 elderly sisters living in apartments in Renmore.


And did yoiu know there's an IDA mall Business Park on the corner of Tuam Rd and Connolly Ave?

AFAIK it is a reservoir, its marked as Tank on the OSI map.
That street in Ballybane, is marked on Bing if you zoom in enough as another part of Ard Aoibhinn Drive

That ties in with what I'd heard also regarding the nun's. Another Galway mapper has marked it as sheltered housing as of earlier today so I'll leave it at that and just added Sisters of Mercy as the operators of the housing

Do you know, I've driven past that estate every time I go into town and never once thought to go into it. I've added it to the list and named it as IDA Small Business Park. I'll update it more once I get a chance to take a spin around there, cheers

So the original tagging of it was correct, thats great. I've just added a reservoir_type tag to it to state its a covered one. Should prevent confusion if anyone else ever comes across it

That is a reservoir, it serves the entire Castlepark area.

In relation to the bus stops in the city, I ran a query which anyone can view for themselves here

I've screenshotted it below and straight off you can see the west of the city is looking great in terms of bus stops but the east is only partially done. There are 136 bus stops marked in Galway.

If anyone knows of a stop on your street I would appreicate if you could zoom into on the map I've linked above and tell me if its there or missing. If its there, just click on it and see if the correct bus route is listed on it and if its not let me know and I'll fix it.

Just let me know the Node number for the stop and the details that need to be added. You can see the Node number for a stop in the image below

For all this week I have a job active on MapCraft to add as many buildings as possible on the west side of the Corrib for Galway city. I started the job last night and so far 41 slices have been completed out of 183 but myself and other mappers from around the world.

I would love it if some Galway folks would get involved.

Its an easy way to get started into mapping in general, just simply adding buildings so if you are at all interested take a look.

Well, as of 6pm this evening every building west of the corrib was fully traced. There might be one or two that are missing, but the quantity would be likely less than 100 missing out of several thousand.

I don't have exact figures yet, it'll be a day or two, before ITO updates with the data from todays date to show the jump in quantites.

However, the starting point on 23rd Mar @ 3am was as follows:

Galway City (West)
Buildings: 3,764
of which, 926 contain address information e.g. house number & street name its on

Galway City (East) - Not part of this MapCraft job
Buildings: 3,583
of which, 2,164 contain address information e.g. house number & street name its on

Again, I don't have exact figures, but I do know several Irish members of OSM helped out along with other OSM members from the likes of England, Belgium Estonia and even far flung places like South Africa & India.

Once I have exact details I'll give an update.

From start to finish it took less than 40 hours.

So the numbers are in..

3,764 buildings to start with, finished with over 10,000 at the end.

Gathering of address data for all of these will take place next weekend (thats why these were needed)

Just back from the annual State of the Map conference in Birmingham last weekend where I met up with a load of the Irish osm folks. One of the things we all acknowledged is that, as a group, we are pretty bad at mapping socially, as in a gang meeting in a pub, or cafe or library somewhere with the purpose of a combined effort to complete some sort of mapping task.

With that in mind, next weekend I plan on setting up camp somewhere on Saturday afternoon, most likely some pub that offers free wifi and a plug socket or two for laptops (if anyone knows of such a place please let me know).

Whether you are interested in openstreetmap and want to know how to get involved or just curious as to what its about / whats the point of it. I will be quite happy to sit and teach anyone who wishes to learn.

For any specialist groups (cyclists, hikers, hill walkers, sailing folk etc) that have toyed with the idea of using OSM, I can show you how to get started to create your own maps, the way you want, show the features important to you.

For civic minded folks, whose interests lie with community concerns, I can show you how you can use openstreetmap to communicate your message more effectively, how to use it to gather information important to your concerns / projects. In addition, anyone interested in humanitarian causes, I can show you how you can help with relief efforts in many parts of the world by mapping areas remotely, otherwise known as crisis mapping

For anyone interested in learning how to edit, I can show you the many options open to you whether it be using a smartphone (iPhone or Android), pen and paper or on the PC/laptop (note: if interested in the PC option, please try to bring a laptop & mouse with you as it will be easier to teach if you have your own).

Lastly, if anyone is just interested in seeing what OSM is about, and what you can do with all this open geo data, or just interested in discussing open data type topics in general, please feel free to come along too.

TOG is hosting an OpenStreetMap hack day/meet up/barcamp! OSM members will meet up in Dublin and do open street mappy stuff on laptops in TOG. Like an indoor mapping party / hack day / social meet up / barcamp.

OpenStreetMap is a world wide, open content map. It’s Wikipedia meets Google Maps.

If you’d like to learn more about OpenStreetMap, come along! Want to start mapping your local area, and want help? Come along! Want to find out how to use the low level OpenStreetMap data? Come along! This event is open to all, TOG members, non-TOG-members, general public, hardcore OSM mappers, and OSM newbies.

If you’re an OSM mapper and would like come, but not sure what to do, don’t worry we have loads of townlands to map.

The event is scheduled to run from 12noon until about 6pm on Saturday 8th March 2014. However there is not a fixed schedule so feel free to drop in or out whenever you want.

There is no charge. The event is open to TOG members and members of the general public. Rory is the point of contact for the event. We’ll probably go for some beers or something that evening. You aren’t required to bring anything, but that will limit what you can do. I’d suggest bringing a laptop or something. TOG has free wifi.

TOG & OpenStreetMap

TOG has hosted a mapping party and held talks about OSM. TOG itself has been mapped on OSM for years, and when we moved to new premises, the location was updated.

I can't help you but I just have to say that I'm amazed at the amount of work that has been done on Galway city since I last looked at it on OSM.

yeah lots of folks have been tipping along adding info. I'm only back focusing on the city myself because I've a load of addresses collected that I need to add to the map. You can see the current state of addressing in Galway here. About 10,000 done, with probably double that still to be done

Heh sorry no the image doesn't change, but if you visit the link you can see how much work has been done since 2007 in Ireland. Barring a few main routes, it was largely blank

Note that some roads in Newcastle are mis-named.

There are no such streets as:

"Lower Newcastle road"

"Upper Newcastle road"

Years ago there was a street sign outside the hospital to explain all this, but it has since been removed.

The stretch from Cooke's Corner (St. Mary's road/Shantalla road/St. Helen's street) to University road is known as Newcastle Road.

The stretch from the hospital/University road/ Tesco Express heading north is known as Lower Newcastle and then Upper Newcastle.

Note that there is no word "Road" in the names of these streets/roads.

(Another example is Newtownsmith)

This has been confirmed to me by the City Council.

This is the e-mail I received from the Council Roads Technician:

"The situation is that Newcastle Road is from Cookes Corner to University Road. Lower Newcastle is from University Road to Snipe avenue and Upper Newcastle is from Snipe Avenue out.
