Watching Leona Maguire makes me want to give up golf !

I've just watched Leona Maguire playing in the Irish Girls U18 Open Stroke Play Championship at Roganstown yesterday. Its a 54 hole tounament with a cut at 36. She shot Par 72 in round 1 to lead by 4 shots. She shot 69 in round 2 and now leads by 5 and 7 from two French girls. For the 9 holes I watched yesterday she hit all greens in regulation, made 2 birdies and missed at least 3 great birdie chances. She's absolutely tiny in stature yet hits her 3 wood about 250 yds. Amazing talent to watch - just confirms what a different game they play to most of us here. I'm going over there again shortly to watch the back 9. She's teeing off at 10.20 this morning so I'm heading over at about 12 to watch. It's free in to watch if anyone wants to see some class golf being played.

Good video. I didn't realise Shane O'Grady was coaching them. Sound lad from Blackbush.

Just back from watching her win it in a canter - 8 shots clear of the field. Lisa was caddying so I presume she was injured. I watched her from the 11th which she parred. Bogey on 12 followed by birdies on 13 and 14. Bogey on 15 after a pushed drive forced her to just chip back to the fairway. Pars on 16,17 and 18. Played a fantastic 40 yard green side bunker shot on 18 to leave a 4ft birdie put but she didn't make it. Probably too much going on in her head with the win.

Rounds of 72, 69 and 74 -1 for the tournament with her two french playing partners back on +7 finishing tied 2nd.

    What a talent

I've come to enjoy watching ladies golf on tv. It's easier to identify with shots they play. Like for a 150 yard shot they might be playing a 7 iron which would be what I'm playing myself at the weekend. Watching the male pros is different, they're on another planet. They might be hitting a wedge for the 150 yard shot, hard for us ordinary guys to associate with that.

I've always thought the regular club player could learn alot more from the pro women than the pro men to be honest. Like you said, their game is more comparable to ours than the pro men's are.

Without a doubt. Even though plenty men on here might be slow to admit it. Especially those who regularly hit drives over 300 years. ;)

Apparently Nicholas Colsaerts played a wedge on the 200 yard par 3 16th at the China open today. Different world altogether.

What tees did they use for the Irish Girls U18 Open Stroke Play Championship at Roganstown? I played the open day on the Tues before hand in Roganstown and although the course was in good condition with favorable weather they were playing from the yellow tee boxes. To make matters even worse they had some of the tee boxes pushed so far forward especially on the front 9 some of them were actually on the women's tee boxes, couldn't understand it. Roganstown is a nice course from the whites but when playing an open competition you want to play the full course and not a truncated version.

What tees in general do they use for high caliber women's competitions? Presume they go further back than the standard women's tee boxes?

Dunno if O'Grady is still coaching them. Think that might have broken up a while ago. Great players though. Followed them in a tournament last year. I would say their driving would be marginally longer than a good amateur bloke but the mid and short irons were up there with as good as you'd get.

A few days before the u18 girls championship the tees were pushed very far forward (probably to protect the tees for the girls comp). They were generally using the mens proper yellows for the girls. One exception was the 16th which is a par 4. They put the girls off the tips (blue) and made it a par 5. A very big hit to cross the water from there but Leona carried it by abot 20 yards.

I agree it was bad form to play forward tees in an open. :(

Watching the Curtis Cup on the TV at the moment...Jesus does that girl ever smile?

Ok she got hockeyed but still...never anything other than a frown, even at the opening ceremony and any other time I have seen them.
Remarkably different than all the others, especially the American girls.

A (presumably) grown man coming onto an internet forum to give out about a 17-year-old girl's personality (as viewed through his TV set)? That would be my reason, personally, for finding it a little stupid.

Just caught a bit of the highlights on Sky there... tbh she comes across well, a little shy, which is understandable considering her age... Calling her surly is very harsh in my opinion.

    Hmm.
I'm the moderator of the Golf forum, so its not that insane to imagine that I both watch golf and am logged in here, at the same time.

I've actually met them both, and watched them play a round of golf against two young lads in my own club. They didnt speak to either of the two lads once in over 4 hours, didnt speak to anyone else and didnt smile once. I think thats more than a little strange, especially considering their parents are very friendly and talkative.

Superbly constructed argument Daithi, I have no come-back to any of your well made points against my post.

Well presuming your personality has changed then of course they wouldnt, but if you are unlikeable then people wont like you...no matter what age you are.

I honestly dont see why you think we should treat these girls any differently than anyone else.
For example TheDoc seems to think its fair to call the other girls egotistical <somethings> so Im not sure how that is fair...is it because they are Irish?

I dunno, just doesnt seem right to me - they're young girls under a media spotlight because they have talent, which brings its own pressure... do we expect them to dance a jig and entertain us as well? Got any daughters? I wouldn't like to think people were so judgemental about mine, that's all.

I dont think expecting them to smile or converse with their playing partners is akin to expecting them to dance.
Again for example, we recently had the Marcel Siem thread where numerous golfers were effectively abused over their personalities. Tiger has received lots of abuse on here for his personality, I just dont see the difference, they are in the public eye just as much as the other golfers I have mentioned.

Difference is Tiger is a pro athlete who has effectively become a billionaire from the sport. Leona Maguire is an amateur.

So the difference is money? Seems a little strange. I hardly ever ask someone how much they earn before I decide if I can like them or not.
Does that mean that we had to love Shane Lowry right up until he turned Pro but the day after we were free to abuse his weight issue?

    Greebo,
mate give it a rest. Youve said enough at this point. I'm sure everyone here is sorry a 17 year old girl (who was probably 15 or 16 at the time) didn't speak to your mate while playing your course. It's not a crime and besides both maguires are very shy in fairness. Ryan Giggs had brutal media skills at 17/18 too if you recall, Rooney not much better. Best going easy on these extremely talented 17 year old school girls...... hope they go on to have great careers.

Greebo, should a moderator be neutral rather than making silly remarks about a 17 year old female amateur golfer in the biggest tournament of her life?

So in 4 hours of golf they never smiled or spoke- therefore for four full hours you followed them on the course, while continuously staring at them which you would have had to do to make the comment that they never spoke or smiled?

If you saw the footage today you would have seen her smiling while the team celebrated together

Chatting to a guy recently who caddied for one of the maguires in a tourney a while back. What he said wouldn't be a mile away from the observation the mod made. I suppose the crucial difference this guy was saying is that he was fairly impressed with the absolute focus, shutting out all the distractions etc. I imagine you could say the same thing about a young tiger woods and many of the top players.

Apparently theres a younger Maguire brother who is a handy player too. Talented swines.

    Neutral about what exactly?
What on earth does me being a moderator have to do with my opinion of Leona Maguire?
Being a moderator means I attempt to keep the peace on here and try to ensure this part of boards.ie runs smoothly, it has nothing to do with my own personal opinions of people, things or events. Why you think it would baffles me to be honest.

I was not the only one to notice their lack of smiling or any attempt to communicate with their playing partner ( two shy, teenage, local boys, who somehow managed to overcome being part of this spectacle and still be friendly and interactive.) most of the people were commenting on it afterwards actually.
No one is saying that they need to be amazingly entertaining, but when you are playing in a one off exhibition match I think acknowledging your playing partners or the crowd isnt too much of an ask, or, if thats your approach to life/golf then you cant have much of an issue with people noticing and commenting on it.
