From time to time I'll browse eBay to see what is around. Mostly its very old machines which I'm not interested in. I'd love to see something like Daytona USA for sale to see how much that would go for. I'd seriously consider a purchase if reasonable.

    How about yourself?

That sounds pretty amazing and I'd love to do the same myself - do you have any pics or vids of it playing some random MAME driving games? Are the cab features like force feedback working with MAME?

After seeing that pic someone posted of a Capcom Mini Cute recently, something clicked in my brain and I now want one. Always thought they were cool, but they never really registered that highly on the want list.

Seem really hard to come by though. I guess size wise, they're an easy one to smuggle into the house past wives.

So you can have any cab in the world, and you chose something obscure and bizarre like Taiko no Tatsujin?

You know, I've tried my best to stop with the hipster thing, but you're really not helping yourself :p

Of course: too many fond memories of playing it! Wouldn't call it all that obscure or bizarre at all - pretty much the only constant in modern Japanese arcades.

Egret would be nice too, of course, but if I had to choose one I'd go for something that's unique.

All this is purely hypothetical, but Taiko is one thing one cannot come close to emulating outside of Japan without a full cab build.

    The possibilities...

Giant House Of The Dead Cab
A 4 Player linked Virtua Racing Cab
A twin sitdown electrocoin SF2 HF
    A Starblade Cab
    A Vector based cab
    Afterburner 360 Gyro Cab

Baically endless possibilities, & Sir Ultimate picks a pink bongo rhythm based cab? Ciderman surely has to bring the ban hammer out for this one :p

Sure, hypothetically speaking I'd love a full Darius Burst: Another Chronicle cab. I'd have a nostalgia fit over a personal Silent Scope one. I could spend hours playing Afterburner, House of the Dead whatever.

But I'm also extremely fond of Taiko, and myself and friends (all of whom are not children, last I checked, to pre-empt that inevitable query) spent much yen on it on our travels around Japan. Given that all but the nichest arcades are largely devoid of shooter cabs (Hey, naturally, is different), it became our respite when we needed to play some videogames, and away from the smokey dungeons of the fighting games, where you'd just get your ass kicked online anyway before you even knew where your 100 yen had gone. Was a game even my hardcore videogaming friends and my non-gaming cousin were happy to play along with.

And yeah, I'd like to see a kid on Oni difficulty ;)

So yeah: for personal reasons I'd be very happy with a Taiko cab, as it's a very unique experience I have of my time in Japan. Don't really see what's so odd about that

I see it's more a personal thing, rather than what's already established as 'dream' like in the cab world. No arguing that I suppose, we're all different.

Yeah, was honestly taken a little aback at the reaction!

I suppose given the criteria you set, basically your ultimate dream cab without any limits & you picked what would generally be considered an oddity, rather than an accepted 'want'.

But explaining it the way you did I suppose merits your choice. We've all been influenced by particular cabs throughout our time, & I suppose, it's the ones I encountered when I was younger stayed with me more. Like a full model sitdown Ourtun cab, the sitdown SF2 cabs, & to an extent, gun cabs all influenced me far more heavily than anything I seen in later years.

Your choice fits in though with that idea, that that particular cab filled a particular gaming void throughout your holiday, & for that, I can see why it occupies a high place for you

I should stress that the game is fantastic too, and the moderately fun DS version cannot come close to capturing that. At extreme difficulty it's a match for anything Cave could throw at you:

After all, what fun would this forum be if we all thought the same way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,750 ✭✭✭ghostchant

Myself and my girlfriend played the hell out of it too, our 'local' arcade over there happened to have one. Great fun and as you said the DS games can't really emulate it (but are great in their own right), nor can anything else.

The only vs game I could hold my own at over there was pro evo, playing rather intimidating-looking guys locally and via network play. Would sit there playing them for an hour or two most nights (no shmups in this particular arcade, in my defence). Was great fun and has ruined football games for me here, they need to be played in dodgy smoke-filled arcades.

Aye, it's a game one cannot begin to understand until you have gotten the inevitable drumming blisters that go hand-in-hand with playing it ;)

I own one currently, a bartop hyperspin cab which is nice and small and very convenient for family/children purposes. I got rid of my last one, a woody 3/4 size poker cab which I rebuilt as a MAME cab, as i needed the space at home.

If i had money to burn or a place to keep more cabs, i would own a CPS1 SF2 HF cab, a Neo Geo MVS "big red", an asteroids cocktail table from around 1978, and i would probably build a full size woody from scratch with a monster PC in it to emulate everything under the sun.:D

Hell, while we're dreaming, I would also love a twinned pair of single player sit down Super StreetFighter 4 Taito cabs imported from Japan, but I'm not holding my breath for that to happen any time soon....

I have seen the Playstation version for sale, and the drum controller as well.
I suspect there is a loss of experience given the drum is smaller and you lack the audience and ambiance of the arcade.
    Not too expensive either.
Hmmm, where did I leave that credit card??

Here is a separate larger scale drum controller for the PS2,

Nice Choices... Big Fab collection, I dont know what Id want,
I think just love to have massive space to have loads machines all on at once.
That Arcade Ambiance Sounds in Background. And have room Double up as Home Cinema with Panasonic PT-AT5000 Projector...

If could pick I think id add Custom Super Megalo, Outrun 2006 SP Twin, F-Zero AX Cab and few Candys Cabs to what I already have, oooh and a MK and Killer Instinct Cab, great artwork.

    Got two atm:

    cabs-031712.jpg

Both std 2p/3b 20" jamma units. One in background with a 19-in-1, front one with an MVS mobo. I'm currently considering selling the VideoWizard and replacing it with a MVS Lordsvale (green version).

And in talks about another 2 atm, another same as the one in the background (Play A Coin, 'tate it vertical and put a 60-in-1 in there), and a dedicated - but undecided yet whether a driver, shooter or 'vintage' dedicated. May go for a Naomi uni yet...it's an itch that keeps itching :D

No MAME'ing, otherwise I know I'd just end up playing this-that-the other game 30 seconds at a time, and not 'enjoy' as much. I'm looking more at PCBs than cabs these days, 'been after a Bomberman World for ages and can't believe how rare this seems to be

I've two cabs at the moment. A Mortal Kombat II Cabinet and a Jamma Cab. I've just moved so might have to let the Jamma go... but I hope to replace it with a Killer Instinct cab when I find one!

I've a Williams Defender which was a bare shell painted black when I received.
Artwork cleaned up, a Williams multigame and panel and also a 2 player jamma panel and hyperspin setup.
Ive a handful of jamma boards too
I've also a Williams Whirlwind pinball

There was dual Daytonas for sale mentioned on jammaplus for I think £400-500 iirc

Speaking of arcade cabs, this is probably the best scratch made cab i've ever seen. It's based on space invaders. If i ever build another full size woody cab it's going to take so many ideas from this. The back panel and lighted interior of it in particular look amazingly well done.

    Pics of front

Without the lit buttons & interior, it would have been so much better. It's so easy to cross the line when building a cab & make it tacky...illuminated buttons belong on gambling machines, they only detract from gaming cabs imo

That's the biggest problem I see with a lot of home made stuff, its bling'd up to look like the Las Vegas strip. That and waaaaaaaaay to many controls/buttons.

    Keep it simple.

I nearly went down the illuminated buttons road.. so glad i didnt now.

I'm a big fan of keeping cabs simple. I never played on a cab with illuminated buttons back in the day, so I've never built them into any of my cabs, and i like to have as few buttons as possible on my panel apart from the ones needed for actually playing. Encoders like the ipac that allow you to assign second functions to your existing buttons are handy for that.

I must say though, i think the interior lighting and see through rear door on that space invaders cab are really clever. I guess it's just a matter of taste, but i think it's really distinctive and well done, and not overkill at all.

I would maybe dial down the floor lighting on it allright. It's a bit "pimp my ride" for me, but there are lots of good ideas there to rob ahem, draw inspiration from :D.

I must try to get my hands on a router at some point. It's a tool I've never used, and looking at that build there are some really good results to be had from using one.

Agreed. Excellent skills to make it but the illuminated buttons and the row of buttons under the monitor detract from the look imo. The see through rear door is pointless. The thing that stands out most for me is the apparent lack of knee room under the cp - it doesn't seem to jut out far enough if you're going to be sitting at it. Different it was an original stand up cab but it's not. The artwork on the sides and the marquee look cool though.
