What's stopping an incident like the Norweigan massacre happening here?

It got me thinking over the last few days considering it's been in the news.

The fact that Norway is one of the most peaceful and crime free nations in the world yet is still susceptible to acts of domestic terrorism such as what happened last July.

What's stopping an Irish equivalent from embarking on a rampage and blowing up government buildings over here?

It could just as easily happen could it not?

Of course it could. People be crazy.

Though Irish people are notoriously lazy, so ah..it'll be grand.

Of course it could happen here, as it could in any civilised western country

Anybody could commit a crime, that's the easy part...it's getting away with it that's the difficult part

Not much is stopping it I guess, but unless you want to adopt the rather invasive and privacy-compromising measures introduced in other countries (like the UK) then we'll have to live with it.

Let us pray destruction of valuable government buildings happens? Here, blame the people inside the buildings.

Well petty begrudgery and backbiting takes up most of our time and at night we just like a cup of tea. I'm not sure we'd be able to commit fully to the old right-wing nationalistic massacring.

I've met a few folks in old jobs where I thought "I'll just be reeeeeeal nice to this gentlemen cuz I still havent figured out how to out run or dodge bullets yet". They were the kind who had tiny pupils, wide eyed and had the same little smile on their faces at all times. They actually could smell fear.

Because our disgruntled folk, when consumed by anger - just summon up old A-Team episodes for their explosive inspiration and head for Leinster House aboard decorated cement trucks.

It seems to distract those who would ordinarily have access to strange agendas and high firepower towards ****ting on on the internet about which type of camouflage the Elite Special Awesome Rangers Branch of the Finnish Svaeeerrgskjairgl wore in 1982, whilst talking about shooting each other with plastic ****ing balls.

And then comes trying to find a replica of said uniform in size 56 Lard....

    Nothing stopping it from happening.
That Anders Breivik is a nut job. But equallly, we could have an Irish nutjob do the same over here. The only way to stop that would have checkpoints every 20 feet. Which cant happen. As it would invade peoples freedom and create an controlling state.

But it just goes to show you I guess. I mean, life is dog eat dog, every man for themselves. But! stuff like this doesnt happen everyday. So while I believe the world is one f**ked up place, I guess it aint that f**ked up.

Emmm...isn't the bomb squad called out on a regular basis and if I recall correctly there were (and still are) several armed paramilitary forces knocking around as well as several large armed criminal gangs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,198 ✭✭✭CardBordWindow

Most of these killing sprees end in the guy being arrested or killed. That wouldn't happen here. So the killer would just get bored.

It's the risk of boredom that's preventing it happening.

Alcohol is still cheaper in Ireland so there is a bigger probability, someone with a grudge would go to a pub and get dead drunk instead of playing World of Warcraft for a year. I can't imagine an Irish guy doing that, imagine the nights out, the hangover, going out with friends etc ...
Seriously, I think it's a different mentality, also, the Irish can't really be obsessed with their good Aryan looks.

.....sure he wouldn't get past the lads in the glasshouse at the gate. And besides, theres enough performance artists in there as is.

Whilst there are plenty of guns in Ireland, to get your hands on a high powered rifle as used in Norway would be extremely difficult. If you were to try to use Granpappys old double barrell shotgun it'd be like being stoned to death with popcorn.

DISCLAIMER : Kids, don't do guns..... or drugs...... drugs and/or guns are a no no*

*Jack Daniels and other over the counter alcoholic beverage drinks are exempt from this say no to drugs policy.... and so are Wham Bars

    The Good Friday Agreement.
The Irish nutjobs are mostly kept in check by their respective political organizations.

Because nobody in Ireland gives a **** about the stuff Breivik cares about, except socialist crusties.

Unsurprisingly, even with the wealth of information that the internet affords, some people are just content to remain blindingly ignorant.

Don't you realise that the stuff Brievik cares about is the almost exact opposite of what socialist crusties care about?

Or that the two parties care about the things very opposing reasons?

    Your comment is ridiculous.

the only thing stopping a repeat of what happened in norway is the ban on ownership of high powered weapons , that said , if someone was determined enough , they could source such hardware through the underworld

our mental health laws were significantly changed around a decade ago so the kind of people who would have been in an institution thirty years ago , are now living free , i dont mean dangerous people were let out but thier are deranged people born every year and unless they commit harm , they are not institutionalised anymore

Actually there's an emergency law from ( I think) the early days of the state when the IRA were giving the free state awful gyp that any military drilling or training was illegal. I've often wondered if the airsoft boys could be seen as contravening that.
