Here is my step by step guide to fulfilling your dreams :D

    -Enter Marathon
-ask all your family/friends to sponsor you.
    - run marathon
    -collect money
    -give money to charity

If you want to raise extra money then you can dress up as a banana, run backwards, run barefoot etc.

If you want to be a bad baxtard: ask all your friends to sponsor you for charity but pocket all the money yourself. They'll never know and you'll get rich :D

By the way what distance marathon are you thinking of running?

It's quite simple as meno says, google Dublin marathon (as an example), click enter, pay, train, collect money from friends and family, run race and then give money to chosen charity. Simples.

    Good Luck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

Also, after you enter the marathon contact your chosen charity and tell them what you are doing. I raised money for Oxfam when I ran Dublin in 2010, and they sent me out sponsorship cards, fundraising advice, and an Oxfam singlet.

In fact, I think if you set up a fundraising page on mycharity.ie (which allows people to donate online) if your chosen charity is linked to the site you can contact them through there. I think that's how I did it.

always good to get physical sponsorship cards off the charities. A lot oof people still don't like making financial transactions online. Think of your mum, granny, aunts, uncles etc.

Why? Someone just came on to ask how they go about running a marathon for a charity? Seemed like a genuine question to me.

First person posted what was intended as an insult in reply and that just started other people off with smart arse, unnecessary answers. Nothing wrong with the original post.

Nothing wrong with the original post.

Except for the complete lack of research on the OP's part. Simple things like doing a google search to see what marathons you can enter in Ireland or letting people know your chosen charity would be helpful before expecting everyone else to do all the legwork for you.

Just a lazy, vague, waste of time question. Clearly common sense is lacking. I would have thought that if you wanted to run for a charity, you would call the charity, tell them you want to raise money for them, and they send you out the forms and hey presto, you're good to go. The entering the race part, well, how complicated can it be to go onto the website of a particular marathon, take out your credit card, key in the necessary digits and click "submit"?!

Same can be said for any topic.

Claralara could have googled Sportsworld and found plenty of info on the club before starting her thread.
cambo_gueno could have googled and found the info he looked for in his thread about running the Wicklow Way.
People who post up questions about intervals, tempos, LSRs etc could just as easily google and find what they're looking for instead of expecting everyone else to do the leg work.

This is what the forum is for. No need for the sort of replies that were posted.

How hard is it to email the graded meets and ask if non-club runners are allowed?
"poster asks question on boards.ie rather than going direct to source" will not be making the front page of any papers soon

He/she entitled the thead "running". Hardly getting off on the right foot (pardon the pun)!

Not everyone knows this, hence the question. If you're not interested don't open the thread. The poster didn't know how to go about it, so asked people who they thought might be able to help. That's what the forum is for, not a lazy, vague, waste of time question at all.

Ha, I didn't start a thread about that, but asked the question as part of a discussion on the graded meets.

Strange attitude by the mods here towards waste of time threads. Over on the Australia forum they are ruthless. If you start a thread saying "I want to get a working holiday visa", "are there many jobs in Australia? etc etc they immediately lock the thread and point the OP to a megathread with all the info they need.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

The only thing that made this thread a waste of time are all the replies from people who thought they were being funny.

Thread could have finished with one or two replies. Instead we have this tripe...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,029 ✭✭✭Pisco Sour

Not everyone knows this, hence the question.

    Anybody with:

    a) Common sense
    b) A primary school education
    c) An understanding of the exchange of money for goods and services

would be able to figure this out on their own.

At the very least the OP could have provided a bit more than a one line wonder.

Threads like this clog up the main page and potential interesting discussion gets pushed down towards "page 2" very quickly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,983 ✭✭✭TheRoadRunner

I agree with RQ, a little harsh.

I've posted a couple of questions in different forums before (photography for example) and I know some of the frequent posters were probably going, "here we go again, another stupid question" but in fairness to them they were very helpful to my dumb ass queries.

OP probably could have found info if they had googled first but maybe google brought them here!

Oi, I did! ;) See OP… the club website was down and I also wanted feedback from members and input re other clubs… anyway I just wanted to clear my name - not getting involved on this thread or being responsible for taking it further off-topic.

:) <-- this smiley face means that my post is all in good humor and faith. I agree generally with the points made by RQ - as a novice, this forum has been invaluable to me over the last couple of years with advice being provided to queries that may seem obvious, stupid or pointless to those more in the know.

There's a whole heapload of things a club member on boards can tell you about a club that you won't find on a club website (or even turning up for a once off session or two). Perfectly reasonable question. Something "How do I enter the Dublin marathon, I can't be arsed reading past the first few sentences on their website" isn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

There isn't a megathread on 'how to raise money for a charity by running a marathon'.
There are lots of posters, and lots of threads. It is inevitable that some people will find some threads a waste of time. Over the years I've found a simple trick can come in handy - I call it NOT READING THE THREADS I DON'T CARE ABOUT

Screw that, I've never insulted anyone online in my life. Waste of time.

My comment was witty, sure I was speaking out of both sides of my mouth, but it was a lot more informative to the OP than anything you've contributed so far on this thread. I don't expect everyone to agree with my form of wit, so if you find it harsh, that's fair enough. No reason for there to be total consensus online, that's what makes a forum stale.

Dig your use of punctuation to help get your point across, by the way;)

In that case, the subject was in the FAQ, and there was an existing, active thread on the same subject.
If there was an active thread already on running a marathon for charity I'd have merged the threads.

Or you could have the 3 sentances required to answer this question as a post on a sticky, direct the OP to said sticky and close the thread. Or you could merely provide the answer to the question and then close the thread.

Just some constructive criticism on how the forum could operate more efficiently.

Ray gave all the response that was needed. There was no need for me to add anything else.

It's fairly annoying when a newbie comes on to ask what is usually a genuine question(not convinced this one was btw) and regulars pipe up with this sort of crap all the time. If they don't want to help, then don't reply. There's no need for the sort of responses newbie threads tend to get in here if someone isn't part of the in-crowd.

Plus, you know me, I love a good argument. :D

To be honest, we don't see this very often at all here. Remember that punter who started that thread about running sub 4 for the mile, and the majority were treating the guy seriously!

If you think people are bad here have a read of letsrun. You'd be torn to threads for putting up a thread like this!

That would require me to write this sticky, containing all the questions that beginners might ask (this question hasn't come up very often, but I have to anticipate it, and all the other questions that might come up)
And the newbie poster to realise that the answer is contained in a sticky, and find it there. IIRC, some regular posters here weren't even aware of the nominations for last year's ART awards, but that's okay, newbies should be expected to find everything immediately.
And I should be online around the clock, ready to jump in with my directions and thread closure.

Or, you know, people could give helpful advice to newbies, and if that's too hard just ignore the thread.

    decisions, decisions....

It was a barbed comment for sure, but it would have informed the OP how to go about running a marathon for a specific charity. If it also made him/her think twice about doing the forum here the decency of posting with a correct subject title ("running" as a subject title?), being more specific and informative about what their query is, and taking the time to use proper punctuation; then I'm happy with my given response.
Like I said, no problem if anyone else finds it harsh.

Plus, you know me, I love a good argument. :D

So it should be in a sticky, or it shouldn't because it's obvious, and we should all be like the people on the Australia forum, or possibly letsrun, but anyway, the point is that is was terrible of the OP to waste all of our time with such a stupid question, let's all spend the next week discussing quite how stupid it was...

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

The OP was vague and asking a question that could have been about any distance charity or "marathon ". In the run up to the coming mini marathon threads it wasn't too out of order to consider it in a similar vein.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 711 ✭✭✭cwgatling

It's pretty pathetic really. So what if you think the op is lazy, the question is nonsense or it's just a wind up, leave it be and let it fall off the radar. Why bother getting involved ?

Some of the posts tie in nicely with it the Bolt thread and how it's acceptable for him to talk ****e (which he does by the way), maybe it's a trackters thing :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 245 ✭✭beco2010

to start ill will say sorry for wasting all of yer valuable time. Im sure that the time any of you spent reading over or complaining about it could of been put to better use. I never knew that asking a simple question would cause a few of you to up in arms “ A newbie asking a question “ it’s a disgrace coming here of all boards threads to get an answer on how to go about running for a charity in a marathon

so mod if you want to close this do
