Hoping to do the A4 race on Sunday. It'll be my first non-handicapped race, so a whole new ball game in terms of tactics!

I love how there's a 12m difference between the start of the course and the finish, despite them being at the same junction! :p

Will be doing this on Sunday. Whereabouts is the finish line on that circuit?

start/finish line is between gaffney and beaumount on that map (at about 9 km)

the 12 m vertical drop is good fun :)
(or it was my garmin acting funny)

signon is in the Drogheda retail park

Anyone have a rough idea how steep that Copperhill Rd section is? Looks like the climb is about 600/700 metres long, but is it just a drag or does it kick up severely.

@buffalo - I'm with feck sake lads, if you don't think the sprint is for you then you've gotta do the damage somewhere else. sounds easy when you say it ;)

Cycled out that way this morning. The finish line is painted on the road,
There's a drag just before the finish and then it almost levels out. The road surface from Duleek to the finish is just super.

Ah lads, you make it sound like I've given up already! I've yet to set a breakaway win in an A4 race this year, and I'm not a sprinter, that's my current thinking. But I'm willing to give it a go, don't worry! :)

    its more of a steady drag than a steep kick. 2 - 4 %.

Peter Bidwell race this evening. 52km, with A4 given 1 minute over A3, and A1s and A2s only 2 minutes further back

The handicaps gave absolutely no incentive to work to stay away, particularly with the knowledge that Philip Lavery was in the field

We still managed to stay away for 2 and a half laps before Philip zoomed past us. It was a bit longer before we were caught by the other groups. I managed to hang on for another lap, doing my usual trick of staying out of trouble towards the back. It actually worked quite wiell for a while on a lumpy course, as most of the climbs were preceded by a descent and I could get some momentum on the lead up, with inevitable bunching amongst those ahead, so it was not to difficult to hang on.

Part way through the 4th lap quite a few of us were detached on one of the climbs though. Fortunately I managed to get on the wheel of an Usher rider and he managed to TT back to the group. It took a lot out of us though, and early on the next lap I was dropped again. I thought it best to stop at the end of that lap, mainly to avoid the risk of getting myself lapped

We averaged about 37kph before we were caught, and then it picked up to around 39kph

Lavery stayed clear to win by around 20s I would guess

You riding in Drogheda tomorrow Beasty?

Lavery put on some show today. Serious efforts put in by a handful of riders to try to close the gap on him, which was around 45secs with 2 laps to go. Roll on tomorrow and a separate a4 race for 'the rest of us'!

No - family commitments meant I had to race today - the alternative would have been the vets TT tomorrow. I'd like to give an A4 Open race a go some time though - these shortish handicapped ones are pretty savage

Dirty day at the office, and nothing to show for it. Was dry when the A4s set off, but a lovely shower got us all saturated before we'd done half a lap. Tried my hand at a few attacks, stayed away for about a third of a lap at one point, but nobody bridged (despite some efforts. ;)). Attacked on the last lap on the road into Duleek, a Stamullen rider came with me, but he dropped off at the last corner - not sure why, maybe he saw we were doomed. Went up too early to the front coming into the finish, and the legs gave up long before the finish line was in sight. Essentially pulled over then to let everyone pass me, and rolled over the line paddy last, but happy with the legs and the work done.

Congrats to kenmc of this parish for his placing! :)

PS anyone care to marshall for me in the Hammond race next Sunday? :D

Enjoyed that. Finished in the bunch (A4).
Congrats to bcmf who made his comeback to racing after almost 20 years...

Pleasantly surprised at the riding standards. Only 1 crash and that seemed due to the slippery road surface after some heavy showers. The vast majority of rider seems to know how to ride in bunches and there very very few dodgy manouvers.

Saw that - anyone know if he was okay? He was holding his head, but hopefully just in a 'adopt-foetal-position-don't-get-hit-by-a-bike' kinda way.

my first a4 race, wasnt sure what to expect, but really enjoyed it. My target today was to finish in the bunch, and I did that, so Im happy. I think that rider who fell was ok (i was talking to the marshall at the corner after the race). Weather was pretty bad allright. All in all I enjoyed it. Buffalo - was that you out at the front after the last corner?

@fecksakelads, im sure there will be a few pictures somewhere.

I saw that rider fall in the A4. He was grand, back in the bunch before Platin.

Here's a photo of the A4 local heroes, left to right, bennersenior, lennymc and
padjo5, who was 4th. Well done lads.

Really enjoyed that one, despite the rain/dry mix. I'd only just gotten dry after Thursday nights club league swim race. Felt strong all day, comfortably in the top 20-25 riders throughout. Didn't do too much attacking, tried to get across to buffalo on the 2nd lap to give him a dig out, but he was starting to die so I came back and sat in with him for bit. Figured that nothing was going to stick in terms of a break so content with sitting in for the sprint.

A lot of lads really misjudged where the finish was, up and out of the saddle sprinting with over a km to go, there was no way they were going to stick that, so once I managed to unbox myself I went away over to the right where there was a bit of room, and paced myself as best I could - people were coming back down through the group pretty fast as the engines died off.

Dead happy to take the 3rd, was hoping to just nip in for the 6th or 5th even, so deadly doors!

Felt bad for buffalo and a few others though, attacking the whole day only to finish in the bunch after the sprint, fair play to them, deserved better.

Had a go at the sprint but left it too late. Was a fast-finishing 7th. Was about a wheel off 6th, which was a pity because I only needed one point for the upgrade.

I was a bit sick not to place but I did much better than I thought I would on a course that didn't really suit me. I've been on the premises in sprints the last two weeks which has been a pleasant surprise.

The family were there so any disappointment was quickly lost in the chorus of "well done daddy". I'll take praise anywhere I can get it!

That was one hectic weekend 2 days racing and a spin to Kerry to rescue my motorbike from a brake down during the Kerry Group Rás Mumhan and i was working till 4am this morning
I had hi hopes of picking up a few points today in the A4 but it was not to be i had i dig of the front early on 2 guys went by me but i did not get across to them and was left in no mans land to suffer untill i was caught ,soon after that MWP said that it was not hard to work out how this race was going to end i felt he was right and decided to settle in to the bunch and wait for the gallop (its a pity theses races have to be like this their are a lot of strong A4 riders all it would take is a bit more aggression)
So after 4 laps the race was all about the run from the graveyard in Duleek to the line i took the inside line trying to keep out of the wind as much as i could i managed this with out getting into to much trouble then at the bottom of the small hill went it was time to push for the line their was a surge to the left when we came on a car on the right i tried to wined up my sprint but a few guys in front of me were tie-in up and before i could make my way around them the race was over i rolled in 10th or so i will just have to take my own advice and be more aggressive in the sprint,im a bit dissapointed with no points to show for my effort but im sure they will come
Big thanks to Gerry and the team in Drogheda Wheelers for puting on a super show

Well done kenmc on the placing - fully deserved, you rode a good race.

I came up short in the end, finished in around 9th/10th I think. On the left hand of the road in the run up to the sprint but got boxed in a bit just as it was all kicking off.

Course was just a bit too flat for my liking. The long drag wasn't must of a drag at all really, I went to the front there on lap 2 and 3 to try to push the pace a bit & maybe split the group but the headwind and the lack of gradient meant I was wasting my time. Had a dig on the last lap and got a gap before being joined by a guy from Drogheda Wheelers and a guy from Navan but it came to nothing.

Thought the riding standard was pretty good in general but one Swords lad was on the receiving end of abuse on more than one occasion for seriously sketchy riding, dunno what he was doing (maybe touching wheel or something) but he nearly caused a pile-up a couple of times! Hope for his sake he's a quick learner. Struggling to understand the mentality behind the racing too, certainly there's plenty of strong riders as they are quick to chase you down if you try to escape, but then nothing, they just sit on your wheel and take it easy. Similarly with the frenzied sprints up the little hills, small gaps forming everywhere but then at top of the hill they all sit up and slow down and everyone gets back on. Maybe I'm missing something, maybe with a few more races I'll see the light, but it seems all a bit negative.

A comeback to racing after 20 years.
When I woke this morning the last thing on my mind was getting on the bike never mind racing after I took a fairly bad Asthma attack yest on the Swords 8.30 spin.
But cue an onslaught of texts from Rob Fowl...
After some serious thought and much dismay from Mrs bcmf as I still sounded very wheezy I decided...sod it. Not gonna put it off any longer.
Unfortunatley I made this decision as I was emptying the dishwasher and sliced my finger open on a knife.
Patched up I started and felt very comfortable for the 1st lap and a half when the torrential rain on the course meant the plaster came off and cue blood pouring from my finger which refused to stop.I dropped back as there was blood on my legs, handlebar and when I got home I realised on my face, socks and my crash hat.
I wouldnt have lasted the pace anyway as I have not trained (and by that I mean not even been on the bike) for 3 weeks and 1 of those weeks was spent in the company of some great Belgian and Scottish beer.
Despite all that I enjoyed it and hopefully when I get those 3 weeks back I may be challenging for those sprints as long as the course is flat

and he was never in trouble, finished comfortably in the bunch.

I tend not to comment on the standard of riding other to add that i felt safe today for most, but it is a race and racing involves taking risks so their is and should be a bit of bumpers involved, its part of the game

I was in two minds as to wear tights or shorts, in the end I stuck with the tights as they were already on and I didn't want to change. Delighted I did, as the hail came down on the first climb. My poor white shoes though, they'll never be the same again :( So much for " ah sure it's nice enough, I don't need to bother with overshoes".

As regards the riding, there was one or two lads who couldn't hold their line in the corners, but other than that I felt very safe in the bunch, it's really settled down in the last couple of weeks compared to the early season races. Thankfully. There's a big difference between taking risks and riding dangerously.

Sure there's a risk involved, we all know that when we sign up. Also I've touched wheels myself in the past, my own fault and I accept that. But I also think there's an expectation that every rider in a bunch is going to ride in a reasonably straight line most of the time and show some awareness of who's around him. When someone drops anchors or veers wildly from their line in the middle of the bunch (on more than one occasion) you have to question are they ready for racing in a bunch, no? Anyway, I'm not going to labour the point, just hope for his own sake he learns from today and is a little less panicky for his future races.

As for the cold, following the hail storms we had in league race on Thursday night, today's weather was positively balmy :)

Great race weekend put on by Gerry and the crew from the Wheelers, lots of well marshalled races. Took off today with the intention of finishin in top 10. Managed to do that, gave it full throttle goin up the finishing 'bump' and came in 4th...delighted. Well done to Benner and lennymc today too, great to have a few DW lads in a4 bunch. Love reading the race reports on here - gives you so many different perspectives on the day, as well as making you aware of what the race meant to other people.

Well done to you bcmf for getting out there despite everything! Wish I'd know you were there, would've said hello. I presume I'll see you for the last day of the Rás again? ;)

And fair play to Drogheda Wheelers, it was great marshalling, and a lovely course (even if it didn't suit mise!). The fact that only one rider went down amidst all that rain and dirt says a lot - and there had been some cones on that corner before, but someone removed them.

I was at the corner, where the chap came down. There was a marshall there with a brush. He was constantly clearing the water from the corner. He did a fantastic job.
I saw the cones, when I arrived there and couldn't understand, why they were there, as they seemed to be on the racing line. I don't know why they were removed, but I don't think their absence was a factor in the fall. I spoke very briefly to the rider involved and he blamed nobody, but himself.

Great race, bipolar course, sopping wet and bone dry and lashing hailstones and blinding sunshine all very well marshalled by Drogheda Wheelers. Really well organised so thanks to them, great lads in the club and the at the prizegiving the main man had a obvious love for both the sport and his clubmates, past and present.

As to the racing, we had 5 laps in A3.
Lap 1 kinda seemed to happen really quickly after a close shave with a wee doggie on the first drag and then laps 2-4 I tried (as did loads of others) to get away a few times but nothing stuck and then on the last lap four of us somehow got clean away and stayed clear to the finish. woohoo! I can't sprint so breaks are the only way for me.

I was last of the four but hey, great to get some points and very nice to be in the break with my mate and delighted for him to get the win, and the GIGANTIC trophy :)

I thought the same thing on the warm-up - we thought they were there to prevent parking on the corner, and would be removed when the racing started. When they were still there after we started, figured that patch was hazardous, and avoided it even when the cones were gone. He took a line through there though, hence my thinking.

Fair play to the guy with the brush - it's great to see that level of dedication! :)

Yeah he came down just in front of me, basically seemed to overcook it on the corner and the front wheel slid out from him and he skidded out across the road a bit. There was no-one else involved in it.

Let me give you my views from the back of the bunch all the way around for 4 laps! Firstly the feckin rain, not even 2 kms into the race, and being soaked through with the prospect of another 50kms was not appealing, at all. With no climbs to talk of (the drags weren't really drags) meant that the pack would never thin out and attrition of cyclist was never going to happen, I should know... I was at the back all bloody day!

The pace was easy and at times I thought a bit pedestrian but I couldn't move on up, I just wasn't prepared to take the chance in very wet road and I guess the pain of crashing is still a bit too fresh (for my liking) in my head. I have to get over my mental anxiety of crashing. Thing is I'm not concerned about me crashing, I worried about others crashing and bringing me down!

I don't think I got my HR up over 85% all race and I think because my average HR over the first 3 laps was low I was getting cold. The last lap the speed uped a bit and I started to warm up and for the first time in the race started to get the feeling back in my muscles! I had loads left in the tank at the end and if I had bothered to get near the front I could seen what's what. I was surprised to see so many pull up in the last 100 meters but I finished the day as I had spent it, at the back of the bunch. I deserved no more.

This course suited my, ahem, stature so all in all I'm disappointed I didn't try harder.
