Was considering doing one of these earlier in the year. Shame it's a week before Dunshaughlin, would love to give one of these a shot.

I have a knee injury and only 3and half weeks to Belfast marathon. Was gonna cycle for training. My last long run is on Sunday , has anybody any idea about how long I should cycle for to make up for my training?

By the way this event has it's own event website now - http://www.forestmarathon.com/news.html

A mod might put it in the OP.

Have entered Cork. That will be only my second, after DCM last year. Is 12 days enough recovery time? When it's described as a forest marathon, is it on tarred road?

I think I've become unhinged after Connemara Marathon, I'm seriously considering entering the 50km of this.

Ok Connemara didn't go so well but then I did never properly train for the hills, I figure on a much flatter course like this i should be ok.....and hell whats another 8km ontop of my previous longest distance. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭NoGutsNoGlory

might enter the 50k... whats the course like??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 117 ✭✭jonny99

I loved this one last year,i'd highly recommend it folks,a fair course, well stocked with water etc. and a RD who knows what he's doing, and the 50k is probably as good place as any to try out an ultra, considering that you cross the finishing line 10 times..
And you get to run alongside 100k running legends:p

New website is now up :

    http://www.forestmarathon.com (also portumnamarathon.com)

Let me know if things are missing or you want something added to it.... remember it's only me doing it so don't ask for wonders, just basic relevant info.

Id like to try the 50 but am unsure what training to put in on top of marathon distances, has anyone any advice or recommend a website with some.

The training for a 50K is exactly the same as for a marathon.

Just a bit slower so you can cover the extra 4.8 miles. Not much slower mind you.

If I recall correctly, Mick Rice says 3 seconds per mile, but Mick's not human.

About 10 seconds per mile slower should see you through comfortably. Slower than that and you're not trying, faster than that at your own risk.

    ok Guys,

I think I finished the new website, with the new course, all info and FAQ with all questions I received in the last few years.

    Let me know :
    www.forestmarathon.com

I have most of the accommodation in a radius of 25km

Only issue I have is people keep asking me how to get there from outside the country ! :o

Seb im doing the mourne way ultra the week before and am thinking of giving the 100k a bash. It will probably kill me. Can i have the option of stopping at 50k and getting a 50k time?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

Well it is a AAI race so don't think I can do this. You will definitely get you the time for the 50km and certify it but not sure about official results.

With Limerick and Kildare done this is my next target. Had a nightmare here last year (of my own making). Learnt that stepping off a long haul flight and into a race is not really a good idea:-)

Unsure of what race to have a go at but think the 100km looks tempting.

Ahh, but did you do last years 5K - surely you would need that for the complete dinner service :D

On that note, Seb, are you doing the 5K again this year ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

Not sure who did the 3 or not but good thing to check out when I get a chance.

regarding the 5km, it is organise by the local youth cafe using our course in the afternoon to fundraise money.

Yes it will be on at 4pm so that most of marathon / ultras will be finished and it might bring some fresh air for the last few people on the course.

    Hi Seb,

I'm just wondering if the ultra's will be posting an official marathon time (will we be passing over mats for the 26.2m mark). I'll be running the 50k but have yet to run a marathon so I'll be curious about my time.

    Cheers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

    Hi Bugsy2000,

Unfortunately this won't be possible. the 50km and 100km course records every 5km and would be too expensive to have an extra mat.

But this is not a bad idea we could have a small marker for 8 laps and 2k195m but could confuse the marathon runners who start in town this year.

I'm a hapless American, going to Dublin for a meeting and was hoping to find someone interested in carpooling from Dublin to Portumna (area) for the 100k. Will probably stay near there 2 nights. Will pay all expenses (susie_ro@yahoo.com)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

In Donadea they had a second clock just after 2k that marked the marathon distance if I remember correctly. Marathon runners wouldn't have to know what it was for.

Obviously with the 50k and 100k starting at different times it's not as simple, it would leave the 50k runners with some maths to do but it could always be used to mark the marathon distance.

    Hey Susie !

Did you check all the accommodation on the site ? www.forestmarathon.com

Just to let you know, We know have a permit for camping on site. Just email us to book your place for free. info@sportsireland.ie

Regarding clock, the Math is quiet simple as the starts are every 2h on the dot.... or you miss your start. I will try to get more clocks but not sure if timing company will have 3 of them.

    But good idea

If you did not see this :

    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/?p=25355

    "Attention Ultra Runners

    Monday, May 21st, 2012
A meeting of ultra runners will take place at the Athletics Ireland offices on Thursday 31st May at 7.00pm. Athletics Ireland is now co-ordinating ultra running and the meeting will assemble a committee on this matter. The committee will be tasked with dealing with all ultra running matters. Please confirm attendance to patryan@athleticsireland.ie"

I hope most Portumna Ultra runners will go to this. I am sure it will be great to work together and developing Ultra running in Ireland.

Nice one! There has to be some Muse, Florence & The Machine, maybe even some Creedance, just maybe.

    Plug In Baby - Muse
    Hysteria - Muse
    New Born - Muse
Dog Days Are Over - Florence
All My Life - Foo Fighters

Anything by Creedance Clearwater Revival for those lazy miles in the middle and maybe Bonkers by Dizze Rascal just to mix it up a bit.

I could go on all night but anything by the above will do for me.

Oh yeah, throw in the Doors , Hendrix & ya can't go wrong with some Dead Weather.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 504 ✭✭✭locteau

    Hi Everybody,

I am relaxing in France before the storm next week..... I will hop to send an email to all participants then.

Watched a very interesting ultra race in France which I would like to replicate and had a good chat with the race director here.

Talk to you soon and I will reply all queries by email in the next two days, once my legs recover from my 30km off road run and real rock climbing

    Seb
