I didn't realise that a demo was being released (although the PC demo isn't out until the end of the month :( ). Can't wait for this. Just bought the first one on Steam for €1.50. Hell of a price for a great game!

I don't like war games and Uncharted is the only shooter I like, but concentrating the mechanics on sniping rather than just going in all guns blazing has me interested

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,378 ✭✭✭Nodferatu

yeah there is a bit of a learning curve for it on the hardest difficulty setting. i never played the original myself but I'm really excited about it. there is no demo for the pc as yet, not sure if there will be its only on xbox 360 and ps3 but its out in 3 weeks anyways so not long to wait, i hope the demo doesn't represent the finished game as there is some problems and bugs in the demo. toasts my only worry.

Demo is on steam. Downloading now.

Wasn't expecting much but I have to say the Demo was actually very good. The kill cams are excellent, that vid doesn't even do them justice, no major organ shots! :pac:

so with the demo, are you supposed to sneak by the first group of enemies?
    or the second?

Eh neither you're supposed to kill them with your Sniper rifle, thought that would have been obvious!! :p

    Enjoyed the demo

I do love the killcam especially when you hit the enemy grenades

Pity it was a short demo

Enjoyable enough, i love WW2 and unlike many i never tire of WW2 shooters, DOD,COD1,CODUO,RO,BIA are still among the best in the business.
This game felt like i was playing single player Red Orchestra 2,id be interested in seeing what the MP will be like.
Realistic shooters of any form are a rarity these days so ill gladly support anything focusing on authentic and realistic WW2 gameplay.

    Saw the trailer of this.

It's not for me; this kind of gun porn is sickening to me.

Also, that "Kill Hitler" DLC... yikes.

I thought the demo was incredibly boring, to be honest. There just wasn't really anything to hold my interest.

I thought the shooting was a little off. I seemed to be hitting them in the chest, and their legs would go from them (with the cool kill cam, got some guys hip bone!) - and yes, I am accounting for wind and the shot falling short.

FFS, downloaded this demo and decided to give it a whirl while I'm waiting for Diablo 3 to settle. It starts up and I can't believe that the graphics are so poor. I'm not a graphic whore, but for a new game, they looked no better than the first game.

Then I realised I was actually playing the first game. :o It's not my day for games.

OK, played the right game now and loved it. I was worried that they might tinker with the formula too much, but I think they've got it just right.

Although it makes you a complete b*stard. I shot one of two soldiers, but only wounded him. Then the other ran out of cover, picked up his comrade to carry him to safety. So I shot through both of them. Another time I shot two guys, but they were both on the ground rolling about in pain, screaming. I didn't want them alerting anyone, so I had to shoot them both in the head.

I'm not proud of what I've done. But it was war. It was a dark time for all of us.

I'm running the game at ulta settings for everything including AA at 1920 x 1080 and the game just looks bloody fantasic. The demo was a bit too short for my liking considering it was a 2GB download and the linearity of the level itself forced you into confrontation instead of promoting stealth. However I haven't played the first game (planning on picking it up on the cheap on Steam) so I don't know if stealth was an established core mechanic of the first but I feel like this game could certainly benefit from it.

Aside from that, getting a ranged headshot perfectly on the Sniper Elite difficulty or having one bullet pass straight through one soldier and into the grenades on the belt of another and having them detonate is certainly very satisfying. However, the stupid day 1 DLC is very disheartening. The inclusion of Team Deathmatch is a nice touch for PCs, I'd imagine it could get very tense.

Nice! The pre order kill hitler mission is tempting!

Loved the first game, despite some of the flaws.

I have no problem with FPS games... generally.
Played through Half-Life 2, spent over 45hrs on Mass Effect shooting up things, even finished Deus Ex multiple ways etc.
And I play fighting games (which is just punch guys until they can't move anymore).

    But this just feels off.

    Haha.

i don't like how as soon as ye shot one, they all know where you are. its a sniper game, i thought id be able to sneak about and pick a few off before they all magically see me

Thought the demo was okay. I'm undecided on this at the moment. I'll wait for reviews nearer the time before making my decision. Nut shoting Hitler is tempting.

That's the way it was for me. You get one, maybe two shots before they figure out the direction and start investigating. If you move then, they keep going to where they think you were before, which is handy for setting up trip-mines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,547 ✭✭✭Agricola

Enjoyable enough demo. Thought the AI was abit ropey though. On hardest difficulty the soldiers have eagle eye vision. I just peeped my head out from around the corner of that starting room and the ground patrol started taking pot shots at me immediately. You would think it would be more realistic for them to come and investigate something they can barely see 100 yards away!

I've seen a couple. Mainly 6's and 7's. What you'd expect, really. The AI is the main issue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,378 ✭✭✭Nodferatu

i agree the AI is crap to be honest. cancelled my pre order a week ago, was looking forward to it, but the more i played the demo the more i found wrong with it. might pick up a second hand copy dow the line.

I agree, good fun for a quick blast through. AI is annoying but overall I find the game not too bad.

Eurogamer's 6/10 seems about right if the demo is anything to go by. I found I was being willed towards just killing every soldier one at a time, for the gratuitous kill cams. The stealth largely goes out the window and the AI just compounds this.
I'll pick it up at half price I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,912 ✭✭✭SeantheMan

I hate Eurogamer, and I wouldn't trust most reviews, as they are usually based on 1 persons opinion, and can depend on whether said person enjoys the genre etc.

They are no more qualified to rate the game than anyone here, so I tend to go by the majority on boards or get the demo myself and base my decision around that.

With that said, the demo seemed good at the start, but there is little difference in any of the difficulty levels.
The enemy placement was nearly exactly the same with each difficulty, and by the time I did my 4th or 5th run, I could finish the demo with 3 or 4 mins.
I don't think it's worth the AAA price on release.
This is DEFINITELY one for the Steam Sales
Give it 3 months, it'l be 15 euro

Um, isn't that normally the case when it comes to reviews? One person, aiming to objectively critique a game. To me, that's what a review is. Show me a website/magazine that does a group review all the time. I know GamesRadar do Super-reviews for really popular games.
You should never trust one review but have a look at a couple and see what the general feel is.
It seems as though they didn't manage to get it completely right this time around from the reviews I've read.

"High velocity bullet at range can damage the mind, shattering the skull shredding the brain severing the spine"

    - it does look a bit gun porn to the detriment of everything else but rented nonetheless. am going to get stuck in

If this had come out 5-7 years ago it would have gotten lost in the glut of WW2 games that had more to offer. Surprisingly now with a glut of modern shooters this is a welcome relief.

It is similar to Sniper ghost warrior with the bullet cam but i like that. It is class when you see their skeleton shatter, or when you take out two with the one bullet. Ok bit of action too when you need to escape and being stealthy goes out the window.

Solid enough performance really. Worth a pop.

    Just finished it there tonight.

By no means game of the year but I enjoyed it all the same. The story is very disjointed and doesn't really flow, strikes me as a game you can just pick up at anytime and get on with, without worry about what part of the story line you are in.

The bullet cam is well done, and the x-ray aspect of it is interesting, I love seeing the round strike off a surface and ricochet into an enemy. Also when the round enters a person you see it tumbling out of them.

Again the bloody AI is really annoying though, sometimes they see you across a square before you have a chance to even begin spotting them, other times they run straight at you without firing

Some levels also feel very restricted, only certain paths you can go at times and a lack of buildings accessible to get to higher vantage points while the enemy has the use of these vantage points.

An enjoyable game I found, but it has its faults. Why can't sniper games get the AI right?!

    For the pc gamers

    what is the MP like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 kyle123

i loved this game finished it a while ago. the story is kinda predictable but what do u expect when all ur doing is sniping lol. but good fun and something different other that the usual cod type shooting games. love how when you kill them in certain ways it does bullet travel for headshots and the like but it gets annoying when you get the hang of it and get good kills more and more. you spend some time just watching ur bullet fly and hit them in the head or head or balls lol. but good fun :) mp isnt great however could have done alot with that and didnt

Some rambling thoughts, having finished it.

In many ways it's a step back from Sniper Elite 1. Your character is just too resilient, meaning you can simply go rambo on the enemy. The stealth and planning aspects are devalued, provide no advantage and pointlessly slow you down. In the original there was a much greater emphasis on avoiding detection, and had the extra layer of atmosphere stemming from the fact that you were masquerading as a German soldier, and wearing their gear.

The feasibility of going in guns blazing also has the unfortunate side effect of shortening the game. I finished the campaign in barely 5 hours.

The most basic gameplay element of shooting people is still fun. The slo-mo organ/skeleton damage may be a little like gun porn, but it's still satisfying and amusing.

The mechanic of shooting tanks in their fuel caps is still there, albeit badly researched. The cap on the back of the Tiger tanks is actually for the air filters, not the fuel tanks. Air filters that also wouldn't be found on a late Tiger. You notice these things after playing World of Tanks...

It's an amusing diversion still, but not remotely worth full price. Wait for the sales when it's down to €10 or so, which I expect it will be soon.

I was sent a copy of this to review completely out of the blue which was nice (big thank you to Nicola Watkins PR for sending it to me), but I would never in a million years have bought this game because I think snipers (and anyone who enjoys playing as one in any game) are pussies and I *despise* playing as any sort of sniper in any shooter (take a look at my BF3 stats and see how much time I spend in Recon). I was also sent a copy on XBox and there's nothing worse than having to play a precisions aiming sort of game with the wrong controls (a controller simply does not work when you're used to playing with a mouse and keyboard). I just need everyone to be aware of these thoughts before I continue because the 3ish hours of this game I played were living hell for me :D The things I do for this job... :p

I thought maybe this might be some manner of sniping simulator where you stealth and sneak and avoid all sorts of groups of soldiers and patrols to go and take out one key target.

It's really not, which is a great pity really cause I'd have been reasonably interested in giving that game some time.

Instead we have a pretty linear "shoot almost everything you can see, just do it from a distance" experience. I did a run through several sections of the second level without using the sniper rifle at all and it was pretty straight forward. You can stealth kill guys if you sneak up on them which is grand, and you're given a silenced pistol if you can't get up close

The slow-mo x-ray cam stuff is a pretty feature - put me in mind of SKATE's Hall of Meat section where you had to do as horrific an injury to yourself as possible and it'd xray in to see the shattered fragments of your bones after each pulverising hit. Certainly it encouraged me to take out the sniper rifle rather than the Thompson or MP40 when there was only one or two guys to kill (Seeing the X-Ray after getting 2 guys in the head with one bullet was unquestionably one of the most satisfying things in this entire game for me).

So, I didn't like this game, but I was never going to like this game and so in the interest of fairness, I'd like to give my copy (on XBox 360) to a Boardsie who might want it, but on the condition that they write up a review of it for us.
