Hi guys, would anyone know roughly how much it would cost for a Windows XP disk second hand? I'm asking for my mother, she was wondering if anyone on Boards.ie would know..

    Thanks a bunch.

If all you want to do is reinstall an existing installation; the serial key, which is all you really need, should be on a sticker on the case of the computer. You can probably <snip> or borrow a disk.

If you're considering putting XP on a new machine, consider Windows 7 which is far superior. It also has an XP mode for those few legacy apps that might refuse to work.

    Obligatory try Ubuntu comment.

Actually don't try ubuntu. They've jumped the shark on the user interface on the latest version

    Try LTS 10.04
    Try Mint
    Try Debian

If you have to try Ubuntu 11.x - do a live trial first, it's designed for touchpads not desktops.

If borrowing an XP CD then you need an OEM CD to match the Home/Pro sticker on the laptop

NB If you buy an windows 7 upgrade it is forever bound to that old machine , so not really worth it

If it's a DELL they can sell you a replacement CD for ~€15
