Bare fibreglass painting

Ok, in the process of getting rid of many many years of built up antifoul on my boat (30 ft sail boat) and this will bring the surface back to the bare fibreglass (don't think there was ever a gelcoat on it as it's an early GRP production boat).

Any advice on what to do regarding painting her (it'll all be pretty much below the waterline)? I'd like something along the lines of primer, paint and then subsequent antifoul. The more durable the paint the better.

Anybody used the awlgrip stuff? Should I be looking at some epoxy 2 part system?

Hi, this may save you a bit of work "interlux no sand primer" but you will still have to prepare your fiberglass by sanding or better still get it vapor blasted this will remove all the paint and leave the fiberglass etched for the primer. http://www.yachtpaint.com/LiteratureCentre/fiberglass-no-sand-primer-info-usa.pdf and any of these http://www.yachtpaint.com/usa/diy/products/Antifouling/search.aspx

You could also look into copper coating it costs a good bit more but can last up to 10 years.

Cheers Fergal, the hull is going to be blasted to get rid of the antifoul and paint, so that does indeed look like the best option.

Fergal, any idea where I might be able to lay my hands on this? Can't find it in any of the usual places in Ireland.
