    Late night drunken debate
"name 5 players ready for a big club"
Apologies to supporters of the players clubs, but you know what I mean

    1/ Junior Hoilett - Blackburn
    2/ Moussa Dembele - Fulham
    3/ Sessegnon - Sunderland
4/ Cheick Tiote - Newcastle - often linked with a move away
    5/ Clint Dempsey - Fulham

Vorm, although I'd prefer him to stay at Swansea

Name a singal top 6 team any of those players would get a game for, except for Baines?

    Leighton Baines
    Marc Albrighton
    Michel Vorm

I could see any of them at Spurs next season, assuming they'll not be signing Adebayor.

Junior Hoilett still has a lot to learn, he needs to work harder for his team. I don't think he is quite ready to start for a top team but is a very good developmental prospect imo.

    Sessegnon
    Krul
    Vorm
    Holt
    Shawcross

Spurs had a sniff around Junior Hoilett in Jan

Mentioned him last summer in the Euro u21 thread (cheap plug :D) but Sigurdsson is the outstanding candidate by some distance. The lad has it all.

    Besides him..

Dempsey - season upon season has stepped for Fulham, age is against him though.

Dembele - an excellent footballer and someone I rated for a long time, but he really needs to add goals to his game before being considered by big clubs probably.

Baines - IMHO, United and Chelsea could do with a new LB sooner rather than later. Evra isn't the good or awhile going by Man U supporters I know and from what I've seen. Cole is getting on in age afaik also. Think the player would rather stay in the North West though, I know I've heard/read that somewhere in the past.

Fellaini - very good CM, someone who'd fit in with any of the EPL clubs.

Sess - ability is not a question but I'd like him to replicate his form next season as well. Though rumours in French media are that PSG want him back so we might not see much more of him in the EPL beyond the next half a dozen matches.

    ___

IF I were to include Newcastle, there'd be quite a few names (hence why I didn't mention them with the names above) from Krul, Ben Afra, Tiote, Cabaye, Cisse and Ba.. possibly Santon in a year or two as well.

As for lot of the Swansea and Norwich players mentioned, they need to do that for another season at least before being mention in this thread. Saying that, Britton looks very good I must add.

    Quality player.

That's who United should be going for, not Jack Rodwell.

    It doesn't say who's ready for a top 6, says who's ready for a bigger club :)

Its a bit of a grey area when it comes to the "big teams",How is one defined? If its the big 4 then its quite conceivable that come next month Spurs and Newcastle will be "big" teams whereas Arsenal and Chelsea won't be.

The above 4 City Utd and Pool are the big prem teams for me.

Players that could do a job for them:
    Agbonlahor
    Baines
    Dempsey
    Hangeland
    Huth
    Shawcross
    Vorm
    Brunt
    Fletcher
    Doyle
    Rodallega

If he can get back to full fitness again Stuart Holden.

This might belong in the controversial football opinions thread but I reckon James McCarthy. He still has more improving to do but I have been impressed by his influence on games recently.
If Cabaye or Tiote get sold by newcastle in the summer he would make an excellent replacement.

Is Doyle really going to displace Rooney/Wellbeck, Van Persie/Oxlade Chamberlain, Tevez/Aguero, Torres/Sturridge or Adebayor/Defoe?

Trills, i normally agree but Paddy Kenny is one of the worst goalie to play in the PL.

Wison and possibly Die Hard from your list.

    Heskey :D

    Vorm
    Baines
    Shawcross
Long? I reckon it's only a matter of time for him.
Bit early for McClean, would rather he had a full season at Sunderland first.

Is Doyle really going to displace Rooney/Wellbeck, Van Persie/Oxlade Chamberlain, Tevez/Aguero, Torres/Sturridge or Adebayor/Defoe?

He's good enough to get 20+ games a season at the majority of the big clubs I named imo.

It's not a case of comparing him to any of those players,Most teams have 3 or 4 first team strikers and at worst I'd say Doyle could be a 4th striker at Utd/City,At best he could compete for a first team place in any of the other sides.

Doyle would surely be in the numbers Torres is in at the very least if he got the starts Torres has had this season and had that Chelsea team behind him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,500 ✭✭✭✭cson

Jesus christ are you really arguing the point about Doyle? He's probably most ROI supporters most overrated player.

He cost Wolves £6.5m remember. Not exactly peanuts.

Had you said Shane Long I'd have no real issue; he is someone who could probably do a job as a 3rd/4th striker for one of the bigger clubs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,879 ✭✭✭✭dahat

Leighton Baines needs to move on imo,he will only stagnate at Everton if he stays beyond next season,he has alot to offer the bigger clubs in the EPL

Siggy has set Swansea alight since moving and i look forward to seeing how he does next season,if he continues as he is surely a team like Spurs will take a chance on him

only Chelsea didn't buy Torres to get those numbers. Doyle is probably the most overrated Irish player going, has been for a while. Long and Walters are significantly better than him up front.

Absolutely agree with this, Doyle cant hold down his first team place at the worst team in the league let alone top six

He really needs a manager that will work him hard and so give him a chance to realise his huge potential. Martinez looks like a soft touch and the whole team has the air about it that the players turn it on when they're in the mood rather than when the manager tells them.

West Brom could be good for him or Newcastle like you say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,193 ✭✭✭✭Kerrydude1981

Dempsey will surely be snapped up by 1 of the top clubs this summer,a goal scoring midfielder who can also do a job up front.

No, he plays the Busquets role.

Allen, a Welsh Xavi, is a much more appropriate comparison.

The likes of Baines and Dempsey have obviously been around long enough to attract the attention of bigger clubs.

However, mentioning relative newcomers like McClean and Hoolahan as being ready is premature, they still have more to prove.

and considering he's 29 (if not 30) he'd really need to be putting in serious performances to get such a big move

First season in the Premier League, which is was what I meant.

Well, he's done a respectable job for Norwich, but often our own players seem to be overrated on forums like this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,911 ✭✭✭bradlente

The main reason I put Doyle in there is because of the way he played when he first came on the scene with Reading.

I can concede that he shoudn't be on the list.I think I put him in there because I thought he should've had a chance the year Reading went down.He was consistent for them and still fairly young at the time.

By and large big clubs are reluctant to sign players like dempsey or Hoolahan who are nearing thirty without having experiences of playing at the highest level. Players st these mid level teams often dont make tru step up to performing at the highest level under a microscope every game! It can be easy to do it for a team like fulham, blackpool swansea etc but another to do it week in week out at say arsenal, chelsea, united etc where every decision and mistake are disected. You only have to look at the likes of arshavin or Adam recently to witness the big fish / small pond syndrome. There are exceptions and im sure ye will all give examples but buying lads from small clubs older than about 25 is a big risk

    I'm confused over Arshavin's mention.

As for Adam, he was the fulcrum of blackpool, everything went through him and he did everything. Dempsey and Hoolahan are not 'main men', they work as members of the team.
