Your top 10 EPL players of the season

With about a month left, I think we can safely judge the successes from the flops this season. Before there is a rush of criticism for my picks, I found it hard to leave out quite a few names from my top 10. However, they are in my honourable mentions. Here are mine:

    1. Robin Van Persie What more has to be said. The guy has been the driving force in leading Arsenal from despair to hope. They would be screwed without him.

    2. Wayne Rooney At the peak of his career, and scoring week in, week out.

    3. Clint Dempsey Over 20 goals from midfield is a wonderful achievement. Goals that could bring European football for Fulham, next season.

4 (Tie) Demba Ba/Papiss Cisse A tale of two halves of the season, with one providing the goals in the first half, and the other in the second.

    6. Sergio Aguero One of the most gifted talents in world football, who was able to settle in at Eastlands from the go.

    7. Gareth Bale Less influential in the last month or so, but you feel the best is yet to come.

    8. David Silva Some amazing performances from the man in the first few months of the season, particularly at Old Trafford. Injury issues have marred his performances recently.

    9. Kyle Walker The most consistent defender throughout the season IMO, though it was a close call.

    10. Michel Vorm 12 clean sheets in the league, I think. Amazing tally for a keeper at a smaller club.

Honourable mentions Tim Krul, Joe Hart, Leighton Baines Antonio Valencia, Emmanuel Adebayor, Yakubu

Kompany needs to be in anyone's top 10, he's been superb, best centre back in the whole league in fairness.

He has been excellent, but I expected him to be. Unlike Walker, who has had a real breakthrough season for me.

    I reckon RVP for POTY.

Kompany only misses out cause he's a defender (they generally get less credit)

Paddy Kerins give me one guess...you're a Liverpool fan?

How anyone can have any Liverpool player in there, especially a defender is crazy. Johnny Evans? Collocini? Koscielny? Crazy...

Which brings me onto my second crazy point...Papiss Cisse has played 8 matches for Newcastle...I don't think it's possible for him and Ba to share an award?!? Sure why not give Player of the Year to Rooney and Hernandez becaise together they have scored 30 goals?!

    Anyway;

    1. RvP
    2. Rooney
    3. Kompany

Kompany has been class all season and I don't recall him being beaten 6-1 and getting sent off. Evans has been doing well in 2012 in fairness, but like Rio, he wasn't particularily good in 2011.

Correct, Evans is a poor enough player going through a good patch in a team hitting an extraordinary run of form. I expect him to revert to type soon enough but having a good 6/8week spell should not qualify him for a top ten player imo

Where is Modric? Probably been our best player all season yet Bale, Parker and Walker are mentioned above him.

He's the exact opposite, a goods player who went through a poor patch due imo to lack of confidence, when vidic was ruled out he knew he'd be starting week in week out and has bossed fairly well.

Ivanovic for Chelsea has been a better player than Walker IMO and also gets goals!

Juan Mata isn't in the top 10 but very close

RVP, Rooney & kompany are top 3

    Hi

Evans has been great and one of the main reasons United is on a good run. This is probably the first time in his united career he's played 10+ games at CB and look what happens?

    Poor player my bollox.

Do u know what type of players or how good sigurdsson, krul, ba, cisse, vorm, holt etc were prior to this season or last few months? Yet you can without hesitation label a 24 yr old playing consistently well in a team 8 points clear who had at one point 12 players injured thus season.

He's been great at the business end of the season and he wasn't as poor as people suggest before Christmas. Some players mentioned here were bought in January! Silva has been poor in 2012.

Almost laughable calling Evans poor. He's shown this form before and only turned 24 this year.

    Have you been watching Evans?

Against Bilbao he was a class above any other United outfield player, when the team as a whole got schooled.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 11,382 Mod ✭✭✭✭lordgoat

People who think Evans is a poor player need to watch more football before making themselves look very very silly.

    Poor player my hole.

It's between him and Rooney for united player of the year. And overall Evans has played more consistently.

Why to watch him play, everyone was saying "Evans is crap" for about 18 months and I will stick to it rather than watch him play. Same with Carrick.

It doesn't matter if Evans has replaced one of the best CB in the world and rarley let us down this season and keeping talent like Smalling out of the team, he is just poor player. He lacks confidence even if he is so composed with ball at his feet and complete some nice cross field passes.

For player of the year for United we can add Carrick also in the mix. With him starting games we looked so much better defensively.

Hard to pick 10 at random so will pick my best 11. Maybe a little unbalanced in the middle of the field. Should probably have squeezed in a Newcastle player too.

7 or 8 posts, hardly taking over the thread. Kompany is a great player and should be on everyones list too.

    Not in any particular order...

    Johnny Evans
He's had a cracker of a season, made all the more impressive due to the fact he had a stinker last year. He was then expected to step into the shoes of Nemanja Vidic and then had to contend with the extra added pressure of a title run-in in which he has been a key player. Certainly made me eat humble pie after my many criticisms of him following the West Ham game in the Carling Cup.

    Vincent Kompany
One of the few that can walk away from this season with City with his head held high. Top class player just born for the Premier League style. Consistant and a hard hitter, how can you not like him?

    Robin Van Persie
We all knew he was capable of dominating, and now he has. A truly world class player and a joy to watch, he has carried that team. Deserves medals.

    David De Gea
A controversial one for many, but I think he has been class from day one (yeah, you heard me!) Even with a few nervy mistakes, I think they were blown out of proportion. Now a key player and cemented into the team, he has saved United numerous times.

    Joe Allen
The heartbeat of the team. Classy player that will likely move onto bigger things. Could easily pick out a few more from that team however (Leon Britton etc)

    Clint Dempsey
Finally setting the league alight as both a creative and scoring force.

    Tim Howard
A cracking season again. Proving us United fans that he was always a talent. Worth a good few points on the board for David Moyes' men.

    Fabricio Coloccini
An ever-present in the Newcastle defence. Revels in the role as captain and a key player in an amazing season. Would surely fit into most of the Top 4 sides quite easily.

    Yakubu
Madness that this fella was even after dropping a division. If Blackburn stay up, and its a big if, it will be because this guy has fired in so many goals. Think his ratio is at a world class level (14 in 22?) and considering the service he receives in the team and the turmoil of the possible relegation he's been amazing.

    Wayne Rooney
Probably his best season, even if it hasn't been one of the most successful for the team. Now the complete player, he opens up the play with long raking balls to the wings and has been scoring more consistantly. Now tasked with penalties and free kicks he has stepped up and been successful in this aspect also. Dominates teams and easily a future leader, if by example being the best method.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,778 ✭✭✭Big Pussy Bonpensiero

From a Spurs perspective Modric, Walker, BAE and Kaboul have excellent. I honestly don't get all the love for Bale, he's been very inconsistent this season. He's keeps drifting in also and tries to play in the middle, and unfortunately, he's too one sided to do that. It's very frustrating watching him play when you're a Spurs fan unless he's actually on the wing.
Parker is also having a good season but imo he hasn't done enough to be mentioned with Modric, BAE, Walker and Kaboul.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,656 ✭✭✭cgpg5

    1. RVP
    2. Silva- this guy was far and way the best EPL player up to Christmas and when on form is something else.
    3. Rooney- like Silva he hasn't been in top form all year but world class in many games.
    4. Kompany
    5. Toure Yaya
    6. Coloccini- our defence has looked shaky whenever he's missing. A rock all season.
    7. Sessegnon- Rate this guy very highly.
    8. Mata- A positive in a very poor PL season for Chelsea.
    9. Yakubu- Will keep Blackburn up yet. Cracking player.
    10. Dempsey- This guy is top class and will join a bigger club in Summer imo.

With all due respect that is a fairly shocking argument you are making.

City were 1-0 when Evans got sent off in OT. United were 1-0 up when Kompany got sent off at Eastlands in the cup. EXACT SAME THING.

How does the final score of either of these games reflect on the performance of either player over the course if a season???

Evans has been a class apart for United over the last 4-5 months, he has been unbelievable and arguably United's best player this season. Kompany is also an absolute beast and a fantastic player, probably City's best player this season since Silva's loss of form.

But as a poster says in response, I don't recall Kompany being in a side thatis 8 points clear at the top of the league with 6 games remaining ;)

Papiss Cisse is a goal machine. Another one today. He's averaging a goal every 67 minutes now, and 8 goals in his last 5. If Newcastle make the Champions League then I'll have to put him on my list I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭Sanity_Saviour

Evans is a good player, but United fans putting him at the same level as Kompany is laughable. Yes he's been "good" but Kompany has been central to transforming a team challenging for a Champions League place team into one gunning for the title. Take away Evans, United would do just fine. Ivanovic(when played at centre back) and Koscielny have been far better.

I thought Scott Sinclair has been incredible tbh, Swansea's best outfield player before Sigurdsson came in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,704 ✭✭✭G.K.

Scott Sinclair's performances were overhyped. Dyer, Britton, Allen and Gower at parts have all been better.

And Evans isn't being overhyped, he's been incredible. And I'm a Leeds fan saying that.

Evans has consistently outplayed 3 England internationals on his team in a now looking like title winning team. Silva when on form is more central to City being a title challenger, when his form dipped in the 2nd half of the season so did City's.

How the phuck can people include De Gea lmao. He was a COMPLETE liability in the air at the start of the season in particular and still is now. Great shot stopper, no doubt. Probably be a great keeper in a few years too when he fills out and cleans up crosses. But top10 performers of this season? Not even top5 at united never mind top10 in the whole league. Also people including Scholes, i think he's played the full 90 4 times? Only 12 apps in the league.

    RVP
    Kompany
    Rooney
    Bale
    Silva
Valencia (i think he has been immense, i think his contribution to the team is still underrated)
    Dempsey

    Aguero/Modric close too

I dunno if I'd have him in the top 10 tbh. If Sagna had been fit all year he'd be there without a shadow of a doubt. I wouldn't have Chesney in either but from what I've seen I would have him ahead of de Gea. He's made maybe a couple of mistakes I can think of, none costly. The 8-2 will obviously count against him though. :pac:
