    Hey,

So moved into a new place, I've a lovely new 40" TV and I'm thinking of buying a console and I'm wondering what ye think are the pro's and cons or the Xbox and PS3. Here are my thoughts at the moment:

XBOX - in my last house there was one and I've played it quite a bit. A lot of my mates have an Xbox.

PS3 - Bluray player is tempting because i'll prob get one at some stage in the near future anyway. But is that enough to warrant going for PS3.

    All thoughts welcome.

    Thanks,

    My thought...

    xbox for the game play.

ps3 no paying 60 euro to the year gold

xbox, better for games, better joypad, better online, better user interface

ps3- better multimedia, blu ray, streaming, web browser etc, games not exactly bad either and if you are a casual user, free online gaming is the way to go!

This answers your question for you. If most of your mates have a 360 and you've enjoyed playing it yourself in the past then get a 360.

If you really want a bluray player then either pick one up on the cheap (they start around the €60 mark now) or just wait and save up for another while and get a PS3 too. That way you'll get the bluray playback and will be able to play the exclusives from both consoles.

360 no paying 60 euro to the year gold.

Spoiler: Live does not cost €60 per year. It can be had from places like cheapxboxlivecodes for £26

Ok,still in two minds about it, leaning more towards a XBOX though.

Where can I get a good price on the new version with 250GB? (XBOX)

buy a 4gb and put the older generation hard-drive in

Honestly don't get why people make these threads... there must be about 20 in the last year on this forum alone. Google what are the best exclusives for each.. decide if your going to be playing online much and if so what console do your friends play on... make decision. Rocket science.

It can be had from Zavvi for £148.45 ex. delivery when you use the code CLEARTEN.

Alternatively, it can be gotten from Amazon for £159.85 and choose from an additional game or wireless pack for £20/35.

I own both and the ps3 just gathers dust usually, xbox would be my recommendation.

No contest these days, PS3 all the way

In your case I would go with the Xbox if you plan to play online, mainly as your mates have the same console.

If you want the Blu-ray feature and free online gaming (free doesn't mean better!) then go with the PS3.

It's not rocket science tbh. The 2 consoles are pretty much similar elsewhere in terms of reliability at this stage, at least in any experience I have had with either.

Look out for Used deals in shops, some places give the 1 year warranty with used consoles now as well.

Well the reason I started this thread was to get some advise and irish peoples opinions (and I've got some very ones!). What's the problem with that? Is that what boards is all about? I did search the the threads and the closest I got in the first 15 hits or so was someone asking which is best for their 12 year old for online gaming.

I guess he wanted to talk to people about it before making his mind up. looking at a list if exclusives for someone new to the market won't be a huge amount of help. the only people that know which has the better exclusives are people who are able to compare the two, usually this means they own both consoles so rarely need to ask which should they buy.

I'm more amazed when someone reads a thread with a title like this and goes to all the bother of clicking in and replying when its easier to skip over it.

for the op both are great and neither will disappoint. I prefer my ps3 as I have more friends on that so I guess that's the biggest selling point, but I still play a lot on xbox too.

After owning all 3 current gen consoles, my advice is for you to game on PC. If you have to go with a console however I would pick a 360.

    1. He played a lot on xbox 360
    2. All of his mates got xbox 360

Bolded section is just wrong and the underlined parts are purely subjective.

If your friends have 360's then your probably better off going for that.

how so? the 360 joypad is fantastic where as the dual shock design hasnt been changed since the ps1 and aches in your hands if played for too long. also, the user interface is better and more entertaining than the ps3 which is too dry for my liking.

as a jack of all trades, i think the ps3 wins but for gaming, it goes to the 360 mainly for the joypad and much better online gaming, graphics are arguably nicer on 360 too, more colourful.

anyway, op has answered his own question, got to be 360 as he can play his mates and has enjoyed the console already before.

Thats honestly the winning argument. Friends are the only reason I regularly reconsider buying a console. Most of them dont game on the PC, even though thats what I do. If you're all on XBL it becomes nice and social.

You can get loads of *friends" on the PSN and it has free online play so I would say PS3.. Also on a side not why is the XBOX online so much better?

Not really the same thing as multiplayer with people you know.

Some good points said so far for you op. Here is some more:

    - Illregardless of the 360 not having a blu-ray player. Both have really good media players. Insert a usb stick into either and both will play a vast number of different file formats.

    - Putting online gaming and the fact that one is free while one is a subscription aside. 'XBOX Live' wins hands down over the 'Playstation network'. More demos, More arcade games. It just has more content.

    - Maybe its just me but the 360 controller works better with First person shooter games than the ps3 does.

    - How to put this ;) Op if you are the type of person who is likely to go about getting games a ... 'dishonest way' the xbox 360 is capable of 'facilitating' this. Ps3 is not ;)

On the subject of joypads, personally I find the xbox controller much better, I feel the PS3 controller is too small or something.

Xbox controller is good for fps, but **** fighting games

Ps3 controller has very ****y triggers so bad for fps, but very good for fighting ges due to proper directional pad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 617 ✭✭✭Dapos

Thanks for all the posts. I was leaning towards to xbox because my mates have them and now I'm def going for one. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't be missing out with the PS3. I can live without a bluray player. I have "other means" :D of watching these movies and I might buy one in the future.

    Cheers,

    Dapos.

Having owned both i would lean more towards Ps3 but thats just personal preference. I would agree with those who said go along with what your mates have, you can get the lend of games off them!

I am not looking at it from so called "professional" view. Just from someone who wants to play fighting games now and then, Xbox controller is awefull for fighting games! And I speak as a pure armature of the most noobish cast of fighting gamers :)

Go with the Xbox. At least when you give Microsoft your details they are kept secure.

Nobody has mentioned that the PS3 is the only console to support 3D gaming at the moment. If you have a 3D TV it might be something to consider.

Having both, i do play the 360 more, but i prefer the PS3. It's all about preference. Xbox has a more stable (but subscription based) online, PS3 can have the better graphics in certain titles, you have to look at exclusives for each (inFamous, Little Big Planet, Gears of War, Forza, Gran Turismo, Uncharted, etc).

But, as many have said before me, if you've played mainly xbox then i'd go with that. Also, xbox has a better back catalogue.

Being a Sony fanboy since the PS1 I am more biased towards the PS3. So my opinion might not matter at all.

I own PS3, Xbox, (and a PC which is the best ;):D). My favourite console though is the PS3. I just prefer it. I really hate the Xbox Controller, and its probably because I've been playing with the dualshock controller for like 13 years is why I prefer that one.

PS3 also has a browser, Netflix, LOVEFILM, Hulu I think, it also has RTE Player, and 4oD apps built in which work great.

I also prefer the playstation community. Because of party chat on the Xbox, absolutely nobody ever uses their mics in-game. Everybody is in party chat, which makes it very hard to meet new people, and make new friends which is something I love, I made so many friends on the playstation, good friends that I still talk to a few years later, whereas on the Xbox I have not added a single person other than school friends and some people from forums.

If you are a die hard COD player Xbox is probably better for you.

PS3 has better, bigger variety of exclusives. Easily. Xbox exclusives are what.. like all FPS games. PS3 has Uncharted, Infamous, LBP, Resistance, Gow. Much better games.

As I said at the start, I'm very biased, can't think of much good stuff to write about the 360 other than party chat, which as I stated, has big downsides too.

@Above, HOW DARE YOU GET LITTLE BIG PLANETS NAME WRONG! BEST GAME EVAR!! :D But seriously, I love that game so much.

Myth: no company is impregnable. Just because Xbox Live hasn't been hacked yet, doesn't mean it won't. I feel thats extremely important to point out, as a matter of personal data security.

With controllers, I'd agree that the Xbox controller fits into your hand better, it's better put together than the PS controller, however it's bigger and I find it more difficult to reach certain buttons when in a hurry, especially the arrow buttons, and it uses up a hell of a lot of batteries, unlike the PS's which come with already built-in rechargeable batteries with a surprisingly long life. The PS controller is smaller, more convienient, it's compact, easier to reach certain buttons. The PS's triggers aren't great - in fps games your fingers can slip off buttons such as R2 + L2 at the worst possible times. However in game shops with console accessories you can get triggers which simply clip on to the L2 and R2 buttons which sort out the slipping of fingers and also enlarge both buttons making them much easier to reach.

PS3s are said to be more reliable - with less overheats and breakdowns than the 360. (but they can still do both if kept in tight dusty corners etc).

I find the 360 menu a lot more confusing than the PS3's. IMO the 360's menu is the equivilant of Facebook's Timeline being more confusing than the original Facebook profiles.

OP, I'd just take into account your budget (Xbox is a little cheaper), what consoles your best mates own, and which console you're more used to. Hope that was of some help.

    Gary

good point there about the xbox menu
I hadnt turned my xbox on in about a year until last week and it took me about 20 minutes to find the arcade game store, it's awful.

I own both and would definatly play the ps3 alot more, and you can upgrade the harddrive in 10 mins, i swapped my 60gb one out for a terabyte last month, so memory isnt a problem :D, id try and buy one of the original ones with back playability as they are the most reliable

Yes it is, in theory... in theory communism works. You see yes you get amazing textures, Anti Aliasing better CPU, better graffix card. better everything. until a new game comes out and there's no drivers for it and on top of that you have draconian DRM to deal with. Also you have to have a fairly good computer knowledge to get the best out of it and most of the time its hassle.

Console? put in disk, press X or A and away you go. That is what most people want. efficient gaming.

    Wrong.

The triggers are used for nades and **** on PS3, and the analogs are much better on PS3. Defo a preference thing, but for me PS3 pad is better for shooters. Some people don't like the size of the controller, never been a problem for me tho (xxl glove size). Still ****e compared to a keyboard and mouse ofc.. but quite decent for something slow with tons of aim assist like CoD.

P.S. These threads are super fun.

The analog sticks being right beside each other must surely be a hindrance? Played a PS3 in a friends house recently (have previously religiously played my PS1 and PS2 and indeed the PSP when it was first released) and the controller felt very unnatural after using the xbox's for the last few years. The xbox controller seems to be better designed to be comfortable in peoples hands...

It's purely subjective, i have small hands so the PS3 controller's size isn't a hinderance to me, and because the analog sticks are symetrical i find it better for some games, also it doesnt need batteries, better d-pad also.

the xbox pad has a better weight and feel, and triggers are better

On the PC you get to choose whether you want the PS3, 360 controller, Joystick, Keyboard and Mouse, Steering Wheel....

point being there is a lot more going on than the controls. Any controller can get grown accustom to.
