Breakfast Suggestions

Ok I've decided that it's time to cut the bit of a belly that beginning to develop out.

One of my problems at the moment is the amount of bread/other high carbohydrate foods I eat.

For example in a normal day I would have two servings of bread and usually potatoes with my dinner.

As a starting point I want to cut out the bread I have at breakfast.

My usual breakfast at the moment is 2 slices of brown bread with butter and jam and a cup of tea loaded with sugar.

I'm hoping that some of the more knowledgeable people here might be able to give me some low carb alternatives. I'm quite a fussy eater, thus why I've always found it easier to revert to bread for breakfast.... The usual suggestions appear to be eggs or low carb cereal. Realistically I'm not going to be making a scrambled egg first thing in the morning and I'm not a fan of cereals at all.

I also know that my sugar intake is WAY to high during the course of a day. I'm going to cut that out.

Eggs if you like them are perfect.
I'd often have a boiled egg and a slice of ham and cheese.
Currently I'm having a meat/egg/veg breakfast loaf I made. The recipe is on thefoodee.com

I do like eggs but I just don't have the time in the morning to boil an egg (I know if only take 7 minutes!).

Edit: Actually maybe it's time to change the morning routine.....

Also I suppose there's nothing against having the egg hard boiled from the night before?

Yeah a hard boiled egg would be grand. I saw a link on pinterest of how you can do a batch of them in the oven ! Might be worth a google.

Sorry to hijack but does one have to completely banish carbs? I hade two slices of whole grain bread this morn(supervalu baked in store bread) which I am led to believe as it is wholegrain that is not too bad for me. I find it fills me up and I tend to not eat until lunch bar maybe a few strawberries or a yogurt(lo fat pro biotic)

I somnetimes have porridge but I like a bit of variety(I dont like eggs)

    cheers

I think the best option is just to cut out bread where possible..... It's evil!!

So if I was to go for a hard boiled egg, cooked ham slices and a tomato would that be an okay breakfast?

I was going to start a new thread but found this one hope this is ok. im having a similar problem with regards to breakfast. I dont like eggs myself, havn't ate them in over 15+ years (smell, texture, taste are main reasons also used to take some weird reaction to them when i ate them whole so im told). having problems with breakfast ideas bacuase of this and since i gave up bread im quite limited in the mornings. any suggestions for an alternative healthy breakfast? besides porridge and wholegrain cereals which is all i have at the moment (getting quite boring) any suggestions greatly appreciated :D

Just get out of the concept of having only whats seen as breakfast foods in the morning .. you can have anything - last nights dinner, steak, rice etc.

My friends look at my like i have lepracy when i have chicken and rice and hummus for breakfast .. well id much prefer have this than the belvita 'breakfast' biscuit you're having! Horses for courses though and all that ..

Thats actually a very good point and something I overlooked. Im always struggling to find something to eat for breakfast, what with time constraints and what not. Must aim for this in the coming week. You can boil an egg in 7 minutes, but you can fry a steak in half that :D

I always have a smoothie in the morning ( and also the majority or my daily cals) I bought one of those magic bullet blender yolks coz I'm lazy about washing up and the blender cup turns into a travel mug and mostly the smoothie consists of:

Some sort of juice- maybe a third of a glass

    A banana

Berries such as blueberries or strawberries ( I get the frozen ones in dunnes for 2 euro a box or a bag of frozen ones in Aldi) I throw a good lot in- just fill up the cup.

Spinach- raw- I know it sounds gross but you taste nothing of it. A good fist full.

Either a scoop of protein powder or a table spoon of all natural peanut butter- not the regular stuff, you get this in health food shops looks weird but once you get used to it you'll never eat the other stuff.

A heaped tea spoon of virgin coconut oil- this stuff is beautiful, full of great nutrients and an appetite suppressant!

Blend until smooth and off you go!

Takes like two minutes to throw together and sets me up for the day.

Be warned though all together it's a good 473 cals or something like that but for me it really sets me up for the day and it's the ultimate lazy breakfast. Im the sort who forgets to leave time to actually get a breakfast in the morning and used to end up running out the door with nothing in my belly- I don't know how I functioned! This Brekkie u can whizz up and eat in the car or on the bus/ train/bike on the way to college/work/life!

I have been eating quiona recently and love it. A lot of websites I've read recommend eating it for breakfast which seems like an interesting idea. I suppose your right as mentioned above, it's getting used to the fact that you don't have to eat 'traditional' breakfast foods in the morning.

Wish I realised this years ago when travelling around Asia as they have nothing but rice for brekkie and it just seemed wrong but I reckon now I would try it.

    The peanut butter?

between the orange juice (120cals), banana (110cals), the peanut butter (100cals) and the coconut oil (60cals), you're already up to nearly 400 cals.

The banana, coconut oil and peanut butter make up the calories as well as protein and good fats.

You don't think fruit is calorie free do you?

I've come across people who think that.

    Silly, silly people.

To be honest you are probably underestimating there. In paticular the peanut butter and the coconut oil. By chance, I made chicken in a coconut-satay sauce from peanut butter and coconut milk last night. and weighed spoonfuls of PB.
A teaspoon of peanut butter was 20g or 120 cals. So a tablespoon could be 250-300.
A heaped teaspoon of oil is more than 60 i'd say. Maybe 15g so 120 calories or so.

    If I had to put numbers on it;
orange juice (120cals), banana (110cals), strawberries (70cals) the peanut butter (250cals) and the coconut oil (120cals), = 670 calories
Could be as much as 750

Possibly, I was going with estimated weights for the peanut butter and coconut oil only in response to to the poster surprised by the calorie content. You would obviously have to weigh everything to get accurate numbers but with a very exact count of 473 I would have assumed this was the case.

Yeah of course. I was jsut giving an example of what it could be is people made it at home and just start throwing in spoonfulls of peanut butter and coconut oil.

The peanut butter I use comes in at 95 cals per tables spoon (according to the kabel) and virgin coconut oil at 43 per teaspoon. I don't use regular peanut butter- I use the health food store all natural one.

I would've thought eating little and eating often would be a better plan??

I'm assuming fruit would work but it'd get snapped up at work I'd say

I wouldn't take much notice of the calories in coconut oil, it is so good for your metabolism that it's like it has a negative calorie effect.

Natural peanut butter isn't any different to regular peanut butter in terms of calories.
95 calories is prob about 15g, a table spoon is going to be more than that I'd say. It's common for labels to underestimate.
I'd suggest you should weigh a tablespoon and see how much it is.

There are benefits to coconut oil. But the above isn't one of them. Its calories are real.

Regarding the eggs I usually have 2 or 3 every morning and have recently started using an egg steamer like this. (The lidl equivalent). This thing comes with a measuring cup and you decide how well done you want your eggs then add that amount of water to the steamer and switch it on. Takes less than 10 mins to cook. Cuts out automatically and beeps when the water is all evaporated.

The plan for the summer (work placement) is to set this up at night with a plug timer to come on automatically in the morning so the eggs are ready to eat when I get up!

I also find Spinach to be nice with eggs and just needs to be boiled for a minute or so! Plus I often have 1/2 rashers with the above.

I can only go by the label - it says 95 cals per tablespoon. It's not really going to underestimate by hundreds of calories now is it? I use a chefs measuring spoon. I'm not really going to waste my time weighing peanut butter.

I already said the smoothie was very high in calories and that I get the majority of my calories at breakfast - it works for me, it's healthy and it's filling. The OP wanted a quick breakfast and I suggested one.
