    Blueberries
    Dried fruit
    Maple syrup
    Nutella
    Cinnamon/Nutmeg
    Mixed seeds
    Chopped nuts

    Yum!

One boardsie adds her own homemade compote but I've never made that.

You can add linseed, prunes, bran to increase the fibre.

    apple
    pear
    banana
    :)

Love the stuff too, I mash a banana up really mushy until its nearly liquid and add it, it makes the porridge so creamy and no need for sugar or honey to sweeten it up. Delish :D

I add hazelnut butter sometimes, makes it taste a bit like kinder bueno filling. Mmmn. A friend of mine makes savoury porridge with cheddar cheese and black pepper, haven't been brave enough to try it yet!

My favourite meal of the day used to be porridge + vanilla whey + strawberry yoghurt. It tasted like a warm creamy milkshake, it was divine :o

It's fairly calorie heavy though, now I tend to just have some Glenisk yoghurt with my porridge, or some natural Greek style yoghurt with some blueberries thrown in. Flippin' awesome food so it is :)

Off topic but I'm just having blueberries and natural yogurt for breakfast, a friend recommended the natural yogurts from lidl (I always eat glenisk) and they are the nicest I've tasted. 112cals per pot and only 39cent!

Go to Nevin McGuire's in Blacklion, CO. Cavan & the porridge the next morning, to quote Ken Griffey, Jr. from the Simpsons "its like there's a party in my mouth and everyone's invited". Cream & whiskey in it!

natural wheatgerm (sometimes called wheat bran), 15% fibre, nearly 30% protein

Yep, a drop of whisky in porridge is not at all unheard of. Traditionally Scottish I think... You'd often see it in hotel breakfasts, or some restaurants.

And a little bit of Bailey's... absolutely gorgeous! :)

I love porridge is this good for high cholestral ?

Can it help bring it down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭annieoburns

I make up porridge from whole oats also called groats. One cup oats to 5 cups of water. It needs long slow simmer so I put in slowcooker for few hours. It makes enough to last 5 or 6 portions. Reheat each morning and then top with sprinkle of molasses brown sugar and greek yogurt. Oh whiskey is for Christmas Day! :)

    Yes good for lowering cholesterol.

A spoon of coconut oil is nice in porridge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭zoobizoo

    Add freshly ground seeds...

    Stewed fruit is also nice.

    Banana cooks in it.

    Blackberries and raspberries....

When in the tropics I add papaya, pineapple and mango.

Chia seeds are magic little seeds from South America and they go really well in porridge, just add a tablespoon per person when the oats have come to the boil.
Google them they are full of good stuff fibre, protein, and omega 3, to name a few.
If you add the chia from the beginning I find it a little too jelly like but everyone has their own taste.

    Try it and see :D

I like pinhead oats dry-fried in the saucepan until brown, then boiled in enough water to cover them in a further inch.

When you add your jam, salt and butter, you can cram a serious amount of calories in in just a few spoonfulls.

half almond milk, half water and lots of flaxseed/goji berries/ nuts (those expensive yet amazing packs from the supermarket).

I do my porridge in the microwave(quickoats) Should I put the coconut oil in before microwaving or after? Just wondering about heating up oil in microwave and if it will be too hot afterwards. Also have shredded coconut and almonds so may add them too.

I've seen them before in Holland and Barrett, and Nourish on Grafton and Dawson street.
