Ever been to prison

Has anyone on here every been to prison?

I, like many I would assume, often say they are like holiday camps but I have never experienced what they really are like.

Has anyone here ever served time in prison and how did you find it?

    Prison?

    No

The first night's the toughest, no doubt about it.
They march you in naked as the day you were born, skin burning and half blind from that delousing **** they throw on you, and when they put you in that cell... and those bars slam home... that's when you know it's for real.
A whole life blown away in the blink of an eye.
Nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it.

They are not holiday camps, your freedom has been taken away and you are put into an overcrowded place full of dangerous scumbags.

I was never in prison and I really don't think I could survive it, I would be suicidal in no-time.

I don't think I could either. Saying they are holiday camps is a throwaway statement that I have often said without really thinking about it.

Mountjoy Women's prison in fairness is better than a hostel- individual rooms- furnished with photos etc. own shower/bathroom, nice communal areas. The men's prison is a totally different world.

Just school visits. The 23-hour lockdown part of Mountjoy where they put rapists and child molestors is scary, they bark!

No. But I wasn't liked much cos I kept singing that oasis song "I'm freeeeeeee to be whatever I, whatever I chose...."

Unless they're coming from somewhere much worse. I'd hate to see that place.

I visited Mountjoy & the Dochas centre before Christmas. Full of hardmen, scummers of both sexes and foreign nationals. Wardens were sound and so were the few inmates I met. They are their own victims, victims of their own circumstances.

It was nice walking back out the gate mind you and so I guess I never visited in the real sense.

I think the holiday camps expression comes from people watching Banged Up Abroad.

I would take time in Mount Joy over a Venezuelan or Thai prison any day.

I was sent to that place on Friday for a crime I did not commit. It is a cold and desolate place and you get no thanks, like not one.

    I was released on appeal.

"nearly 1 in 4 individuals released from prison will have re-offended and be back in prison before the end of the year. The same study found that 1 in 2 prisoners released will be back in custody within 4 years."

    - Taken from Whycare.ie

So it mustn't be that bad in fairness.

You could also interpret that as criminals usually are not the brightest. I don't think they re offend because they miss their mates in prison.

I've heard Mountjoy being called the "free hotel" from people who have served time there.

You know slopping out is still a "feature" of Irish prisons?

Here's a very interesting read about Fuchu prison in Japan. Japan is very civilized compared to some of the more wilder Asian countries, but their prison system still sounds horrible. And not in a way where you have to be afraid of other prisoners.

Yea, On a few occasions, Mostly unpaid fines, Remand for missing court or skipping bail, And I was in doing sentences twice.

Fool's game to be honest, Only done one long stretch spent ten months inside, That was back in 2000/2001.

Only been in for unpaid fines since.

Tis a petty we dont have this prison system in Ireland, if he didnt want to go to prison who should not have tried to smuggle drugs into Japan the scumbag deserved everything he got.
