Just last week we got 3 chickens off our friend who reared them. Thy had been laying for him no bother and have been for us, only prob now is that they are breaking their eggs. I did retrieve one of he broken eggs and emptied it and filled it with mustard, pepper and cayien pepper powder, but they still destroyed it. Any advice welcome

They have free range of 2 acres and we're giving them the same food our friend did

ya i was thinking calcium too... they are obviously missing something! however it could just be one hen cracking them all!

Yeah we think it is just one of them cracking them all... Very annoying, as our egg supply is running low

Split them up for a short while, that should isolate the egg-breaker, as long as you are sure they have enough grit.
Then she has to go, I'm afraid...:(

I was told that you can have the tip of their beaks singed or clipped, it stops them breakin the eggs.

try giving them a bone, (as you would a dog with as little meat as possible on it )
, it will encourage an adequate calcium intake, and the hen in question will stop cracking the other eggs

Try to determine which one is doing it and a quick chop with a cleaver or a machete is realy your only option, you're not going to spend money on feed for them to eat their own eggs.

Give them the empty egg shells when your finished with them (unless your selling them on). Our hens didn't break any eggs since they started getting the shells back

You could get a plastic egg take out the fresh eggs early in the morning and leave the plastic cermanic egg and this might stop them. There is one other way use a neddle to make a small hole in egg break up yoke and white and suck out of egg use a plaseic syringe to inject in a strong mixture of mustard and egg white and seal with sellotapeI have never had to try it but it is supposed to work.

I had 2 hens that would only go for the eggs
I put these harmless clips on them and they stopped after a week I took them off and they have never touched an egg since,

I put the clips on bully hens too that peck at the smaller ones http://www.ebay.ie/itm/10-Poultry-Hen-Chicken-Beak-Bits-Clips-Stop-Pecking-/290707924275?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Poultry&hash=item43af8ae533#ht_500wt_922
