    The Outdoor Season is on!!:D

With results starting to filter in from the US/Australia and with the first main domestic T&F meet (Leevale) kicking off in just over a week, it's time to start a new thread.

Interesting to hear that Alistar Cragg has made the Europeans a focus in his calendar this year, I think after his record breaking run at the weekend, he could indeed be a contender for a medal at the Europeans. I know we've said it all before, but with the focus on the Olympics for most athletes, I think this will suit Cragg. He claims he will try the double (5000m/10000m) and will aim to achieve the Olympic A standard in the 10000m to add to his 5k standard already achieved.

Cragg is doubling the 1500 and 5k tomorrow at Stanford according to his Twitter. Interesting stuff, must be back in a training phase after Carlsbad.

Fionnuala Britton going over 5k too. Cannot wait to see what she does.

Fields here, cannot spot any other Irish.

Brendan O Neill also down on the entry list for the 10k. Should be an interesting one. Saw this earlier but missed cragg and Britton only saw Brendan:o

Anthony Leighio is also running in the 1500m - expect a PB!! Tommy Casey, the Senior Schools 1500m champion for the last two years is also in the field. So too is Kevin Cooper from Ferrybank.

Dave Flynn is racing the steeplechase as is Tomas Cotter, who is running quite well recently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 464 ✭✭runjb

Add in Kerry Harty in the 1500m, and we have a good Irish representation competing there this the weekend.

I think Alistar will put in a solid 1500m, but having only a 90minute recovery before the 5k will surely make it very difficult. We'll see what happens, should be interesting!

Should have spotted Leighio, saw him run at Nationals when I was home in August and thought he looked a really classy runner.

It shows I've been away too long that I have never heard of Tommy Casey!

Tomas Cotter won his 3,000m steeplechase race in 8:51.88mins. I'm not sure, but I think his previous best time was from the Nationals last year where he claimed the Irish title in 9:00.91mins so if that's correct, he has smashed his P.B. by a whopping 10 seconds! Great run by the lad.

David Flynn also with a new steeplechase P.B. coming in 11th in the A-race in 8:49.24mins, I think his previous best time was 8:52.19mins from Stanford last year. Good stuff.

Cragg 6th (i think) in 3.42.00. Decent run with the 5k to come.

I'm watching here, waiting for Fionnuala Britton coming up in a while.

Not the best race by Anthony Lieghio, 8th in his 1,500m race in 3:49.07mins. Kevin Cooper finished 7th in 3:47.93mins in his race.

Fionnuala Britton 6th in 15.29. A solid start but she would have wanted the 15.20 Olympic standard. Race won in 15.18. She did all the work from about 1km to 3km and could not go when moves were made.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,817 ✭✭✭myflipflops

Cragg 13.32 (not sure of place, winner in 13.31.51) in the 5k for a ridiculous 3.42/13.32 double in the space of 90 minutes. He was in the top 4 in a tight group with about 1200 to go when Brent Vaughn made a serious move for home. Cragg was gapped a bit but fought back.

He looks to be in the shape of his life. We will see an Irish 10k record from him in a few weeks.

The Payton Jordan Invitational at the end of the month could probably be a chance at this if he does it

Holly Knight was 16th in the 10,000m in 33:08.99mins. I think her previous best was 33:51mins so that was a massive improvement on her P.B. figures. In fact it's a qualifying time for the European Champinships in Helsinki so well done to Holly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

    Brendan O'Neill was 26th in the men's 10,000m in 29:28.87mins.

I presume Carroll was pacing. He coaches both the boys and has been pacing Christie is some sessions. Pity about The Bull, would be great to see him back at full pelt.

A few Irish in action at the Mt. Sac relays this weekend.

Gillick opening up with a 400m. Michelle Carey also in action over the flat, with Justine Kinney returning to action over the sticks. Tori Pena vaulting and Hazel Murphy tackling the 1500m. Kerry Harty looking to break 10 minutes in the 'chase, while multi-eventer Mairead Murphy in action in the sprint hurdles following a season's best in Arizona last week. Murphy also runs as part of the Kansas State shuttle hurdles team.

Cotter, Lieghio and Christie the only Irish I can spot in the men's middle distances.

Cheers Rineanna! I also see Dave Rooney (Raheny) in the 5000m who was a member of the Irish U23 Euro Cross Country winning team. Dave Flynn is also in the 3000m steeplechase. Christie's clubmate, Jake Byrne (Mullingar Harriers) has alrady ran 14 mins 11 indoors this year and is running his first outdoor 5000m this season

Has anyone travelled to the Diamond League Events over the last year or 2?
I was thinking of going to one over the in May/June to take in some action...has anyone been to the Rome event, in the Olympic Stadium? Seems to be a good line up, with the one and only Usain Bolt going in the 100m against Powell and Lemaitre. Tickets cheap too.

Both Joanne and Catriona Cuddihy qualified for the 400m final at the Australian Championships, with Joanne running the fastest time of 52.33. She must be the hot favourite for the title.

That's tasty running for a heat of a pretty weak meet. Fingers crossed she'll get that A-Standard on Sunday. There is no female 400m runner in Australia close to her, she'll easily win.

Results starting to come in from Leevale Open Sports.

Live results (slightly delayed) are available here:

Sarah Lavin acheives World Junior Standard on first attempt.
14.02 wind +1.3 to win the leevale 100m hurdles by nearly a second.
A PB also by 0.02. and its her only her season opener. It's only APRIL.
    Exciting season ahead.

Catherine Mcmanus hammers her PB to win 100m in 11.74.... 2nd Phil Healy 11.97, just 0.01 outside world juniors standard of 11.96..... so close, loads of races left to get that time. Great 100m.

David Hynes wins mens 100m in 10.63 under legal wind with +1.9. Marcus Lawlor hammers his PB with 10.75 for second , just outside Irish national youth record set way back in 1978 of 10.73. great performance by Marcus + David

Hynes wins the 200m easily. Marcus Lawlor 2nd in 21.56 +1.7 wind.... that a new PB for him and improves his own National youth record from 21.61 to 21.56. Great stuff by both athletes.

Thomas Barr opened his season with a narrow victory over Tim Crowe.
Ciara Mageaan fininshed 2nd in 1500m in 4.21.xx . winner was orla drumlin in 4.18.xx.
not the best season opener when your looking to get the 4.05 olympic standard in the next few months

Dempsey Mc Guigan (Finn Valley) breaks the Junior Irish record in his first meet of the season with a throw of 69.68m, just 23cm short of the world junior Q mark. Surely he will break the magic 70m mark in the weeks ahead. :D

She looked very impressive today. She seems to be in great shape and that 51.55 A-standard is not too far away.

Worth noting that her sister Catriona ran a big PB of 55.03 to finish 8th.

    Few results from US:
John Fagan with a 53.70 hurdles at FSU.

Justine Kinney runs flat 400 PB of 55.46 in UCLA meet

Two PBs for Kalyn Sheehan at Brown Invitational, a 24 second 200 and a 55 second 400.

    Hazel Murphy 4:21.30

Good run by Kerry Harty, she just missed the European Champs qualifying time (9:55mins) by 1.76secs...she has a good chance of making Helsinki over the next few weeks.

Orla Drumm 4.36 mile for 5th at Mount Sac.

Steven Colvert had a strong opening to his outdoor season, with a 10.55 and 20.93 legal clocking at the Bryan Clay invitational in Cali. He opened with a 22.x last year before improving to 20.76!

Darren McBrearty runs 3.43 for opener over 1500m.

Great run by David Rooney to win his race at the Mt Sac relays in a PB of13 mins 53.o4.

This is his first time under 14 mins and to do so by quite a margin is impressive. He also won the race by over 2 seconds which suggests there may be more to come.

Well done to David, he's on the road to Rio!!
