Since HBO Go showed the episode last night, thought it best to have some threads for them.

I'm having the same debate with myself but the other half has zero patience and hasn't read the books yet so suspect I'll be watching it tonight ;)

Maybe I'm being a little presumptuous here but I think they've changed something from the books:

    Spoiler just in case:
Jon notices Craster leaving the keep with a baby and it clearly shows a White Walker come pick it up. As Gilly is only pregnant at this stage in the series and given the baby's importance in the books we can assume it's not her baby. But Craster sees Jon before Jon can attack the White Walker and knocks him out. This is definitely not in the books. In the books Mormont offers Craster an escort to the wall but he refuses and they leave on 'amicable' terms.

It may have no impact in the overall outcome but I really hope they don't start twisting things around. Loving the new series so far all the same

The only reason I'm holding off is that I assume the quality ain't as good as a webrip - or is the quality from our friends in america of webscr just as good?

Whoa, must watch this now, Jon attack an Other and nocks it out  that's a masssssive deviation from the book, that would change everything, the others are only seen twice in the books, once at the very begning and again when Sam slays one on the retreat from the fist of the first men. If Jon actually encounters one then it changes everything.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,845 ✭✭✭adocholiday

No you read my post wrong.
Jon doesn't actually encounter the White Walker. He sees something pick up the baby and the viewer sees the blue eyes. Craster sees Jon at this point and Craster knocks Jon out.

I think it serves to keep the viewers who haven't read the books interested. It could have a massive impact on the story depending on how this is treated in the next episode. The readers all know the fate of Craster and the Old Bear but when and how those events are treated by the show could differ greatly from the books. If so, we could see some events occurring sooner than in the books or even see the plot take a different turn.

I would be extremely surprised if there was a vast deviation from the plot of the books though, given George RR Martin's input on the show's development. Will have to wait 2 weeks to find out!

Also @Donnacha The webrip quality is very watchable. Unless you want high-res crystal audio then wait but I would say Audio 7/10 video 8/10. Use VLC player. In some cases the audio is a little sped up due to encoding. Slow the playback down to 90% and it's perfect. The one I watched was fine I didn't have to do anything with it.

I thought it was just my memory as it is a while since i read the book but I couldnt remember half the stuff happening in the book from that episode. Still now I can't wait for next week after that ending. Also I don't remember that situation with Danery's in the book!
    her bloodrider being killed

Haven't read the 3rd book yet was going to wait till the summer but now I think I might just start it!

Feck that was an awesome episode. Quite a lot of deviation from the book though, as others have said
especially with Stannis and Melisandre, unless I'm totally forgetting that happening?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,845 ✭✭✭adocholiday

    I think that the
    Stannis Melisandre scene
was put in as a precursor to
King Renly being killed by the 'shadow' that Melisandre gives birth to.

This happens again in book 3 but maybe this is to show the kind of character Melisandre is early in the series. I HAVE TO see episode 3 now! It's going to be a long few weeks

Ugh! Just finished episode 2! I should have waited! It's going to be a long two weeks. Overall I enjoyed the episode, but I'm still figuring out how I feel about a couple of the scenes that were added. Have to say I loved the scenes with Arya & Gendry :D

I reckon they're making something that was hinted at in the books obvious to people who haven't read them,
how she gets pregnant with the shadows
, same way they did with Renly and Loras in season 1.

Really enjoyed the ep but a serious WTF moment at the end. Totally different from the book.

I am a bit underwhelmed by the first two episodes :( after reading the books!

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,170 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

They're definitely deviating a little from the books this season. Some of it will definitely be for the good. I heard George RR Martin say in an interview that given a do-over on A Clash of Kings he'd have made Robb a POV character so it'll be good to see more of what he's doing onscreen than simply discovering the results from others.

Theon's arc is being handled well imho. Yara is nothing like I pictured Asha in the books. I always had her as raven haired in my mind's eye.

Melisandre and Stannis was definitely alluded to in the books if not shown explicitly.

Curious to see how they're going to handle the Jon / Craster bit. It's wildly at odds with what happens in the books but perhaps they're going to speed things up North of the Wall?

  • Registered Users Posts: 202 ✭✭chickenboy

I think it's just the fact that TV has to be more heavy-handed than the books were. In a Clash of Kings, Mormont alluded to the fact that the watch knew about Crasters gift of his sons to the others in return for protection, and that he just had to accept it in return for the use of a safe-house. The ending with Jon and Craster needn't change anything, the next episode could just have Jon being berated for his nosieness during the ride to the fist of the first men.

We've already seen things made explicit that we're only hinted at (a very gay Renly for one), and I'd expect alot more.

    another slight deviation
Melisandre implies that stannis has no children, possibly this is just meant that stannis has no sons, but i wonder if they are cutting out his daughter, and hopefully patchface?

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,170 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Could be interesting. I've always suspected Shireen will have a part to play in Stannis's story due to her King's blood...

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭madrab

    Also the implication that Patchface
is a profit of the drowned god, foreshadowing events such as the red wedding

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

    I wonder about Shireen too,
I have suspected that Pachface has seen Something under the sea, I Know I Know, and some of the foretelling of events has been interesting,
But whats the story with the greyscale? Griff has it and it is Killing him, or is it, when they went through the ruined city the inhabtants had Greyscale but they were still capable of attacking them.
are the Greyscale victims some other form of Wights, could the greyscale be an antidote for whatever the 'others' do to the wights?

That was so obvious and in your face in book 2 i think that even after later event you forget about it ??? I'm only starting 4 but haven't heard much from patch face since, but am getting drowned got stuff in 4, now that you mention that I makes a lot of sense in hind sight.

Regarding Stannis' daugher. On rewatching episode 1, Stannis walks away from the beach after the burning of the gods. He gestures to someone in the crowd and she steps forward to him. She is a young woman/teenage girl by the looks of it. That is most likely Shireen they just haven't introduced her yet. Couldn't be his wife she's away sick in the tower! Or I could be wrong!

I have screenshots but I have no place to host them.

I shall watch it tonight. :D

i got the implication that the term sick was in reference to her being barren - though shireen may have been in the crowd

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,810 ✭✭✭Seren_

I wouldn't say so... I think saying that she was sick was pretty much just so they could cut her out of the series. She gave Stannis one child, so she's technically not barren. Is it even mentioned in the books that they had other stillborn children? I can't remember...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,069 ✭✭✭Tzar Chasm

    They can't write Selyse out,
She,s integral to the plot in ADWD

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,563 ✭✭✭✭Frisbee

Decent episode but wasn't really a fan of the way they moved away from the books with
Jon actually seeing a Walker and Craster then knocking him out, that'll surely completely change the way they'll be interacting with Craster now from the way they were in the books.

Making Bronn head of the City Watch was a bit retarded too.

I just figured that was his wife! But with the Red priestess clearly saying his wife gave hime no children it looks like Shireen is out!

    Time will tell I guess

Disappointed with this episode, seems so rushed and jumping from character to character so quickly is not working for me.

The story just gets bigger and bigger from book one, surely they should ad more episodes to each season to compensate. Its not as if they wont be watched??

I think they'll really struggle to get everything into ten episodes the second book is much more expansive than the first. Especially after that second episode which, for me, was mainly just filler.

I quite enjoyed it, regretting watching it now though as there will be a long wait until next Monday for me. I thought the Arya and Gendry scenes were very well done, I've always thought Joe Dempsie a good actor.
I thought there wasn't enough Sansa though, and the Stannis/Melisandra scenes were a bit odd, but I get that with tv you have to be a lot more straightforward than in the books.
I admit, I was confused when Asha was introduced as Yara, but of course people might get confused with Osha and Asha. The CGI-Direwolf, I was excited to see and it looked very good. The scene with Salla was hilarious as well.

I heard they killed off the bloodrider Rakharo because of scheduling conflicts, but I'm not sure about that.
