Another Nomad?

Ok, so most of you are aware of my mental condition that makes me buy more than one copy of a game/console/other stuff(the voices tell me to do it!).

    This time is slightly different.

I want to buy another Nomad to go with the one I already have. The reason is that I'm planning to get the first one modded soon with a new screen, battery. I'd like to have an untouched one that still has the original screen and battery to compare to the modded one in my mini Steve SI museum.

Is it madness or is there some sort of sense to it?

Is it madness? Not really, I get why your doing it. It would contrast nicely to the screen modded Nomad.

    Also, bitches love Nomads.

I had two modded ones up until recently so owning two of them isn't madness imo. Leaving one as stock is fair enough if it's not going to be used for playing games. I'd probably still order the parts for modding just incase you ever decided to make it usable. :)

So you're saying I need 3 of them?

    OK :)

Thats actually a good idea, those screens seem like hens teeth at the moment given how long you've been waiting Steve. Might be worth having a spare modding kit on hand, just incase.

Three is an odd number though

    I agree. 4 sounds nicer. :D

Getting those new screens to match the number of Nomads you have is a no brainer imo (assuming you can still get them). Keeping something stock is nice in principle but the Nomad especially is unplayable without the mod. So leave it stock if it's for show or something but not for playing. Tis nice to have a backup unit too.

I'm going to order a extra few of those screens in the next few weeks and stick them in storage anyway(really glad I'm renting that storage unit :)). They seem to be the best for that screen mod at the moment and they wont be in stock forever.

Plus, screens like this one are been phased out for higher resolution ones that are very nice but don't lend themselves well to modding old hardware.

    Question?
For the battery mod what do I need? I only have the battery pack that takes AA's at the moment.

    All the details here. :)

That Sony battery was bought from ebay ages ago. You'll need the rechargeable battery as it's thicker than the AA one. There's one top right of the picture in this ebay link.

Also I got the dc couplers on Rewind Bits some time ago, not sure if they stock them anymore. You'll need a female dc coupler & a male coupler to connect the charger to the battery pack.

    Cheers guys.

Just want to make sure I have all the parts ready for when a kind soul does all my mods :D

You mean you have a museum of exhibits made up of small stature clones of yourself??

    Outstanding!

I don't, but damn it if that's not the best idea I've heard in a long time :D

Weird, look at this. I put Sega Nomad into ebay.com to see what they're going for these days, and two units came up which both had the exact same yellow screen issue in the exact same place. I've never seen that before - let alone two at once!

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Nomad-Black-Handheld-With-2-Games-Cables-/280855773151?pt=Video_Games&hash=item41644effdf

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Genesis-Nomad-Portable-System-AS-IS-/320877111813?pt=Video_Games&hash=item4ab5c42a05

The second one would be a cheap way of getting a unit to do a screen mod.

I feel crazy enough being a newly owner of 2 Mega Drive 1's! :p

I think I might have to donate one to your Retro Museum for the public to abuse!

Although it would nice to keep both and mod the prettier one with the switchless mod,
and use the uglier one for the overclock mod and switched region mod.

Oisín have you ever came across any games that do not function properly @12.5Mhz?

If the only thing it affected was slowdown, then I might just set it to be overclocked permanently.

I thought the same when I was originally having the 12.5mhz mod done, but for some reason you couldn't leave it permanently wired. It's been a while since I used it so can't quite remember, but I think it causes timing issues in some games.

I kind of overused it when I first got the thing and my sound chip in that particular console stopped working.

Enternow soldered in a new chip and it works again - but it made me very wary of hitting the 12.5 switch!

Oooof! Sorry to hear that! Glad EnterNow fixed it all better!
    Thanks for the feedback.

If it weren't for the sheer unplayability of what it does to the game, I'd kinda enjoy 14 and 16.7Hz. No lie.

Its like Kicked Out by Pussy Galore, or an angry Sega MegaModem trying to make a mashup with Slayer because none of the Brazilian MDs want to play guitar hero with it.
