I honestly think both drivers are involved in the accident, but only Honda driver (red line) is at fault.

Just the Honda driver, Tenner says it was a Wicklow reg car, they ALWAYS do that

I would of thought the Mazda? If you look at the next exit the Honda should be allowed to take the next exit in its current lane?

The Mazda driver crossed into a lane of traffic without checking that it was clear did it not?

Honda at fault. lucky it could have been a lot worse.

Yes but the Honda drive was in the wrong lane for the exit he wanted to take and because of this crossed the path of the honda

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,106 ✭✭✭✭TestTransmission

Quite possible they're both in the wrong lane actually the more I look at it.Does it have any other markings?I can't see it too well.

Did anyone tried to suggest mazda driver was at fault?
    Why are ye asking OP?

    Honda driver surely?

    The civic??

I agree that the Honda may have been in the wrong lane(depending on the specific markings on this roundabout), but the Mazda crossed into the lane that the Honda was in...so the Mazda hit the Honda.

You claim Mazda (blue) was in the wrong.

Could you please explain to us in few words, what is the correct way of driving on a roundabout?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭Arciphel

Looking at the second picture in the PDF shows that the Mazda crossed not one but two lanes.

Honda driver was in the correct lane. Mazda driver crossed over into the Hondas lane and thus is at fault.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭johnbobtheslob

the honda was in the wrong lane that was just stupidity whatever the honda driver was thinking.

    Sorry, my mistake - corrected.

It doesn't matter who was in the wrong lane. If you exit roundabout, you need to be sure you are free to go. You can't just cross, because you are in the right lane. If another car was there because he joined roundabout at previous entry point then who would you blame? Observation at roundabout is crucial, and accidents happen, if you can't exit safely you don't exit. Simple as that.

The honda was in the wrong lane, but I think it would also depend on where/when the mazda indicated to exit the roundabout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 518 ✭✭✭nacimroc

What do Irish people think the right lane is for ? They use the left lane for every exit. Honda at fault.

    Where is this roundabout?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,766 ✭✭✭robbie1876

Rules of the Road suggest that if you are not going straight ahead (taking the second exit) you should approach the roundabout in the right hand lane. Seems quite clear to me, the Mazda did exactly that to exit at the 3rd exit, which is correct. The Honda was in the wrong lane for not only the fourth exit, but the 3rd exit too.

Also, the collision happened in a yellow box junction, I can't see how making a case for crossing lanes at that point could stand up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,315 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

Both were in the wrong, but the Mazda caused the crash by not being in the correct lane. The Mazda should have been in the outside lane after the previous turn off. Although the Honda may have been at fault, technically the Mazda caused the crash.

Are you not supposed to give way to traffic from the right?

Dont know exactly how strict it is on roundabouts,

But whoever was first on (going by the pics it looks like the honda)

    Has the right of way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,120 ✭✭✭Tails142

Mazda was in the wrong lane, no doubt whatsoever, but the Honda cut across his path, so probably shares some liability.

If we all went around cutting off people who drive in the wrong lanes we could be crashing into each other every time we leave the house.

Whoever is continuing in a lane(weather or not its the correct lane for where they want to go) has right of way.

The Mazda moved out of its lane, across the path of another car which was remaining in its lane.

If a car is in the wrong lane for a motorway exit, does that mean that someone can change lanes and hit them and not be at fault?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,468 ✭✭✭matt-dublin

The honda being in the left lane should not have gone past the second exit, the Mazda can take any exit except for the first.

The mazda has to cross the lane and in any other scenario except for the Honda being there the Mazda would have been clear to exit

I've witnessed two cases of this on loughlinstown roundabout and in both circumstances the Gards said the driver in the left lane taking the third/fourth exit was in ye wrong

very similar on blanchardstown roundabout beside power city.... a lot of near miss.

In my understandings , before go off roundabout, need change line towards your exit,
I believe Mazda fault. if somebody changing driving line, (doesnt matter, on roundabout or straight line on M50), before manoeuvre make sure, you chosen line is empty of any traffic.
Honda was goin on her line, and it had no need give way to mazda., mazda had to slow before exit, move to left line, and turn left front left line, unless there is special markings, which i cant see on pictures.

    Mazdas fault.

It also depends on who was indicating & which way they were indicating. Even though the Mazda is in the correct lane it cannot just assume that it is OK to pull over & take the exit.

The Honda could of joined at the second exit & would then be in the correct lane. Really the Mazda should of indicated left before the exit & changed lanes so that it left the roundabout in the left lane.

Blue line drove into red any way you cut it. A court would find substantially in red's favour.

Insurer's likely to read 'it was on a roundabout' and try and carve it up 50 50 though.

It's illegal to change lane in a roundabout. 2 penalty points and or wreck leads endangerment.

All you can do is cross a lane to exit

Its amazing at the number of different answers in this thread . The answer is the honda was at fault . It proceeded all the way around a dual lane roundabout in the outside lane it should have been in the inside lane. The mazda was in the right lane for going straight through as was the honda if it went straight .
Allthough the mazda needed to take more care sometimes its hard to look over your left shoulder and navigate a roundabout

The rules tell us to pick our lane before we enter the roundabout to try not to change lane while on the roundabout

Mazda's front wheel, hit the rear end of honda. Mazda rear ended honda case closed.

My partner was driving the mazda, both herself and the Honda driver are insisting that they are not at fault. While it is clear that the Honda driver was in the wrong lane entering the roundabout considering her intention was to take the fourth exit, I personally believe that there is a grey area as to who is at fault at the point of impact. Could the insurers argue perhaps a 50 % liability as both parties should have been looking out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭niallu

    Honda definitely!

As he was exiting the roundabout after 12 on the clock he should have been in the other lane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 182 ✭✭worc

At first look I was blaming the Honda 100%, then I was blaming it 50:50 but I'd say the Mazda is at fault in reality.

Both were in the wrong lane for their exits (even though no idea what exit the honda was going to take) - at that point it was 50:50 - but then the mazda crossed lanes into another car so it becomes more on the Mazda for basically driving into another car.

Going straight through this roundabout would be taking the third exit - "straight through" is not defined by taking the "second" exit - so there's no chance of arguing either car was in the right lane.

To me it looks like the Mazda braked to avoid a head on collision.

Honda also should not have been there to cause the accident in the first place

    @worc

On a two lane roundabout you are allowed to be in the right lane for straight through.

If your going to or passing 12 o clock you MUST be in the right lane

Otherwise you must be in the left lane, after that you're a wicklow driver
