    .....since you've been supporting them.

You can include loan signings if you wish. No managers though, as I'm sure some people would have included theirs :pac:

    Sunderland:

    1) Niall Quinn - Signed in 1996 for £1.3m. He formed one half of one of our best ever strike partnerships, ended up saving the club from disaster when he took over as chairman and eventually left the club for good 15 years later with Sunderland an established Premier League team aiming for a top 8 finish.

    2) Kevin Phillips - Signed for £600,000 from Watford in 1997. Ended up scoring 115 goals in 209 games for the club and remains the only Englishman to ever win the European golden boot after scoring 30 goals in his first Premier League season with us. Was the second half of that great partnership with Quinn and fired Sunderland to two 7th place finishes in a row in England's top division.

    3) Stephane Sessegnon - The most naturally talented player I've ever seen in a Sunderland shirt. The man's a genius. Signed for £6.5m in 2010 and although we're not going to have him long, he'll net us a huge profit when he eventually moves on to bigger and better things.

    4) Darren Bent - Begrudgingly I'll have to put Darren Bent in here. Signed for an initial fee of £10m, scored 32 goals in 58 games and was sold for £24m after 18 months. He was excellent for us, just a shame how things ended I guess.

    5) Stefan Schwarz - Schwarz signed for us in 1999 and was a big part of that excellent Peter Reid side. He had a real touch of excellence about him and could thread a ball through the eye of a needle. He oozed class. I remember being shocked when we signed him as he'd just come off the back of an excellent season with Valencia.

Very honorable mentions to Jonny Evans, Tommy Sorensen, Nicky Summerbee and Alan Johnston. I fully expect John O'Shea to be right up there by the time his Sunderland career ends.

    - Denis Irwin
    - Roy Keane
    - Ruud Van Nistelrooy
    - Cristiano Ronaldo
    - Peter Schmeichel

    All genuine world-class players.

Cantona was a great player for us, and a catalyst for much of our success in the mid-late 90s, but he wasn't world-class.

For Liverpool I would say my top favourite signings were
    Jan Molby
    Sami Hyypia
    Xabi Alonso
    Fernando Torres
    Gary McAllister

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,558 ✭✭✭✭dreamers75

    Eddie Gormley
    Liam Buckley
    Paul Osam
    Keith Fahey
    Charles Livingstone

All free and as is the norm with Pats players who had "issues" with other clubs and turned out to be Saints Legends.

Fairly sure i coudl expand the list to around 90 :)

    Thierry Henry
    David Seaman
    Ian Wright
    Cesc Fabregas
    Patrick Vieira

For sheer value for money, Vieira at £3.5m and Fabregas at next to nothing go down as the deals of the century. Henry is self explanatory, and Ian Wright was the only guy we had capable of scoring goals for years. Seaman was the best keeper we ever had, so solid. Notable mentions for Sol Campbell and Denis Bergkamp.

    Cristiano Ronaldo
    Edwin Van Der Sar
    Nemanja Vidic
    Antonio Valencia
    Wayne Rooney

IMO all genuine world class players who had/have served the club well and apart from Rooney they were all signed for fees way below their worth IMO.

    Most of our best signings have been very recent;

    1. Luka Modric (£16.5 mill). Best CM in the PL imo, he is just so classy and has buckets loads of technical ability.

    2. Gareth Bale (£10 mill). His rise over the past 2 season has been meteoric.

    3. Robbie Keane (£7 mill). You can say what you like about him but he's a club legend. Was ever so consistent for 6 seasons then 2 not so good one's. Bagged us over 100 goals at his time at WHL. Ruined his career going to Liverpool.

    4. Aaron Lennon (£1.5 mill). One of the most consistent and dangerous wingers in the league. Makes such a difference when he plays.

    5. Rafael van der Vaart (£8 mill). I could have went for a few others here but getting a player of his calibre for that price was an extraordinary bit of business. Does the business so often against the big teams as well.

Honourable mentions to Carrick, Parker (at the price), Berba & Walker.

In the Premier League era I presume? If so then....

    Alan Shearer
Craig Bellamy(only for 1 season but he was brilliant)
    Tugay Kerimoglu
    Brad Friedel
    Tim Flowers

    Liverpool

    Goalkeeper-Doni

    Right Winger-Doni

    Kvarne
    Scales
Julian Dicks or Doni bit of a lose one there.

The ones I am going for are what I believe are the best signings. Not necessarily the best players but I picked them for what they did and were worth to their respective teams at the time.
    In no particular order:
    Steve Bruce
    Eric Cantona
    Teddy Sherringham
    Laurent Blanc
    Roy Keane

I'm sure I'll be ridiculed, but it's all a matter of opinion

Sessegnon should be one of the nominees for player of the year imo
    with Van Persie winning it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,627 ✭✭✭Sgt Pepper 64

    Chelsea 1980 onwards

Tempted to go with the Dave Sexton era, but in truth I have only vague memories of Osgood, Hutch and co and most of the team was in place when I started to take an interest.
So I will start in the 80's with the Bates era

Kerry Dixon 150k from Reading (With Speedie - 200 goals over 3 years)
SB was a scary place but you knew pretty much 1 of them would score and after the dark days of the 70's, Chelsea were on the up and Kerry fired us back up to the first divison (36 goals in all comps)

    Ruud Gullit - Free transfer
Ruud kick started a whole new era and helped raise chelseas profile
Known for his "sexy football", his contacts helped us attract players I had only dreamed about

    Mark Hughes 1.5 million
With Zola, helped us win the FA cup for the first time in 27 years, 1-0 against Middlesborough - the scorer - why none other than our present manager "Roberto Di Matteo, small world huh!
Became the first player in the 20th century to win the FA Cup 4 times.
Also helped lift the UEFA Cup winners cup a year later

    Zola 4.5 million
    My fave player ever.
Helped win us 3 trophies, but more than that was the total amabassodor both off the field as well as on it.
Back heels, nutmegging Schmichal, so many tricks and always smiling.
Helped bring a lot of new support to the team
    We have never replaced him

4 down 1 to go, so it has to be a modern player of the Roman era
Its tempting just to say Roman or Mourinho for the obvious reasons, but I'm going to go for

Frank Lampard - 11 million West ham

Although signed before Romans era, he only really took off under Mourinho
He's now scored over 500 goals, become the clubs 3rd highest scorer and won every trophy there is save a JT miskick in the CL final
Out of all the modern chelsea players, there is only one "Super Frankie"

All these have been very important in the history of Chelsea

I think Ruud Van Nistelrooy was a great signing for Utd, one of the best finishers that graced the PL.

    For my team:
    Barnes
    Berger
    Hamann
    Alonso
    Torres

Subs Aldridge, Hyypia, Reina, Westerveld, Dudek
No place for Lucas or Masch because I like midfielders that can pitch in with a goal or two.

    Dixie Dean
    Neville Southall
    Duncan Ferguson
    Mikel Arteta
    Tim Cahill

Dixie Dean is thrown in because of the legend surrounding his name. Obviously I wouldn't have seen 1st hand how great he was for Everton as he was signed in the 20's but he has to be mentioned. All of these are a matter of opinion. Bainesy could be thrown in as could loads of other great signings that Moyes has made.

Cantona - seemed to be the missing link that pushed others to develop the arrogance and single mindedness champions need.

Solskjaer - had literally never heard of him, but in my opinion was one of the finest goalscorers I've ever seen play, and signed for very little money.

Van Der Sar - Thought at first it was a stopgap solution, but was an excellent answer to goalkeeper difficulties that had been around since Schmeichel left.

Ronaldo - In my time as a fan Man United have had lots of great players and great teams but rarely an individual of the calibre that could be considered the best player in the world.

Stam - Only at the club three years, but probably the best three trophy wise in the history of the club, I think he was a very big reason for that, definitely one that shouldn't have been sold.

Irwin, Keane and Schmeichel world class, but Cantona wasn't?

    In my view, yes.

Cantona was brilliant for us in the league, but generally underperformed in Europe. Irwin, Schmeichel and Keane were great for us in both. That goes for Van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,732 ✭✭✭Magill

    1. Gary Kelly
    2. Lucas Radebe
    3. David Batty (Twice)
    4. Hasselbaink (Short but sweet)
    5. Lee Bowyer

Recently, only a few players stick out as we've mostly signed ****e... but snodgrass and J.Beckford were great signings.

Sorry, but that is ridiculous. The other three players were great, and probably fit in the world class bracket, but Cantona was widely seen as the #1 guy for United in that era. Makes no sense to view the other three as world class, but not him.

    1. Cantona - The final piece in the jigsaw.

    2. Irwin - Mr Consistency, a great defender and a great free kick taker

    3. Solskjaer - Scored a few importamt goals in his day and Shearer was fu*king dearer

    4. Keane - His years at the club were magnificent and his importance should never be forgotten

    5. Kanchelskis - One of my favourite players ever, killed me to see him leave. On his day he was poetry in motion.

    PL era

No particular order except number 1.

    1. SHEARER! Our greatest ever player, a true Geordie, an absolute toon hero no explanation needed.

    2. Nobby Solano- warrior and a half signed from Boca Juniors, what a servant one of our greatest and most consistent players of all time.

    3. Shay Given. Schmeichel aside I truly believe this guy is the best PL keeper of all time. Rarely ever makes a mistake, a true top-class goalkeeper.

    4. Gary Speed. Class act in our midfield, one of the greatest PL players of all time.

    5. Cheikh Tiote- One of the greatest ever PL signings. Who honestly heard much of this guy before signing for us? For something like 3.5 million he has proved quite a damn good player!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,721 ✭✭✭Al Capwned

    In no particular order:

Peter Schmeichel - the most effective keper we've ever had, who earned us many points every season

Eric - the catalyst for the early years of the success we are still experiencing

Cristiano Ronaldo - record speaks for itself - quite simply phenomenal

Roy Keane - the driving force behind united for years, inspiring captain, and a quality footballer too....

Ruud van Nistelrooy - Goalscorer supreme

Just wow. Underperformed in europe. So you're singling out Cantona for united's displays in europe when you could only field a small number of foreign players? I remember those games well and it was a very hard time to do well for English teams.
    Well, what can I say?

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

    No no, you're wrong.

1- Cantona The man was vital for united, the only season we didn't win the league while he played for us was the season he was banned. If there were not those restrictive home grown rules in europe we'd have seen how great a player he was on a european scale. The greatest number 7 of my time.

    2- Keane.

    3- Ole

    4- Ronaldo

    5- VDS

How on earth can you leave out Cantona?
One of Utd's most important players, even Fergie has gone on record saying so.
He changed Utd's and Fergies attitude to training, because he was amazed that no one was available to do it with him
After that, Utd started training and training

    have a read of this

I'm going to go last 15 years.

    5. Gennaro Ivan Gattuso - So important in the Carlitto era, was the heart of the team.

    4. Andrea Pirlo - He was the brain of the team, his passing was and still is peerless.

    3. Alessandro Nesta - By far and away the best Centre Back of his Generation.

    2. Andriy Shevchenko - Over 7 years he scored 175 goals in 296 games and became our second top scorer of all time. Scored the winning PK against Juve in the 2002 CL final in Juve. Absolute Rossoneri Legend and before moving to Chelsea was the best striker on the planet for about 5 years.

    1. Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite A.K.A. Kaká. In 6 seasons at Milan he became one of the clubs greatest ever players. One of the best players to Ever play in Italy and IMHO one of the best trequartistas of all time. His pace, control, strenght and ability to ride tackles made him unplayable on his day, 70 goals in 193 games for Milan helped us to 2 CL finals and his proformance in the 2007 "revenge" over Liverpool was flawless. A total master class, however his best game ever in a Milan shirt was a few weeks before. On a rainy night in Milan on the back of a 3 - 2 loss in Old Trafford, Milan game United a lesson in what football should look like and Kaka showed the world what a true number 10 is. He tore united apart for fun that night with the rain beating down he toyed with unites defence and was the centre of everything Milan did. Over those two Games he was the best player on the pitch by a country Mile and that season he was by far and away the best player in the world.
All 10 of his CL goals that season below. Most of them are schmexy.

    Leeds united

    Lucas Radebe
. One of the best defenders the Premiership has seen. Took a bit of time to settle but when he was moved from midfield to defense he never looked back. Cost us feck all as he came as part of the Massinga deal if my memory is correct.

Eric Cantona. Got him for practically nothing and he was a genius for us. Sold him for way too little to united after just over a year. still hurts:(

Tony Yeboah. Again short and sweet but what a year of goals this guy gave Leeds. Would be on the list for the volley against Liverpool alone.

Gordon Strachan. Absolute genius for us and was one of the main reasons we won the title all those years ago

Gary McAllister. Again like Strachan, he was a great player for us when we won the title. Formed one part of what was Leeds best ever midfield quartet that had Strachan, Batty and Speed as well.

The greatest number 7 of my time.
I wasn't singling out Cantona for United's poor displays in Europe during the era of the 3 foreigner rule. The simple fact is that he underperformed for us in Europe. He wasn't the only one, of course, but he's the one responsible for his own performances, no?
Put it this way, he was a player who shone very brightly for a relatively short period of time (relative, that is, to the other players I put on the list). I'm not saying he wasn't a great player for us (I loved Eric as much as the next fan), but compared to the other guys I listed he's not as good.

As for him being the greatest number 7 of your time: fine, that's your view. I'd say that Ronaldo is a superior player to Cantona in virtually every respect. He was and is a truly world class player. So was Bryan Robson if you want to rate the no.7s of the relatively recent past.

Technically Ronaldo is a better player, but for what Cantona did and brought to the club it's irreplaceable. Easily the most important signing of my 30 odd years. Without him i don't think we'd have been as successful in the 90's. Laying the foundation for everything that came after.
