    Hi guys.

I'm thinking of buying a .22 next week for plinking and vermin. dont want to tick off the nice neighbours or announce my businness to the world so i'm unlikely to use any thing out my back field other than subs .

What are the benifits to using a suppressor on the .22 when using subs, will it thighten the groups that much under 100 yards.

I'm trying to keep down my initial outlay on threading, mod ect

    thanks............

First off get a rifle that is already threaded for the mod. One of the CZ rifles are a good choice.

A mod will reduce the sound of a sub round quite a bit but not so much the HV rounds. It will make a little difference to the grouping and at 100y expect to get about 1 1/2" - 2" groups. 1/2" @50y is good for a factory rifle.

With and without a mod @50m. CZ Style and SAK mod off the bench.

    On a good day

    Thanks clive,

A picture saves 1000 words, going by those pics ill be getting one.
Im looking at the cz american, do you have to order them factory cut, and won,t that probably cost extra? was hopeing to do get a package deal for a few bits and then drop it into fergal white......

    - parker hale or sak mod? reading good reviews for both.......
    - Off my head i think the american barrel is 22.5 inches, should i remove a few inches when threading (maybe to 18') or will this affect range and accuracy??............

    thanks again..............................

If you want a short, threaded barrel and are going to use a scope, why not look at the CZ Varmint and save the gunsmithing costs. I think with .22lr that maximum velocity is reached at 14" of barrel and it's only the last 1" or so, and the crown that determine accuracy. With iron sights a longer barrel gives you a longer sight radius but with a scope it doesn't matter. With my rifle the accuracy with or without the mod (Parker Hale) seems to be more down to me on the day. If you do go the CZ route, get a trigger job done (or fit a kit yourself) as the factory one is not great.

Was undecided between the varment and the american. It was the added weight of the varment barrel that swung me towards the american.
I Was thinking of taking a few inches off to make it more compact with a mod on.......thanks for info re velocity 14' barrel

Read this thread for the (il)legalities of doing that:

Easy answer is get the CZ varmint with the 16 1/2" threaded barrel end of story. Look and ring around until you find a dealer with one in stock. Great rifle.

I've had both the CZ 22lr Style and CZ varmint 22lr, both with the longer barrels. Both shot much the same but I liked the heavy barreled varmint better.

€15 for the bits to transform the trigger from yodave on ebay. Or if you have the $$$ get a timney trigger, its far better again.

I had a SAK mod and can't see any reason to get any other make as it will do the job and is the cheapest @€;50 ish.

+1 with what clive said above. SAK mod and 16" barrel is the ideal .22lr setup.

    If after reading thru the above and you are still intending to shorten the barrel you should also consider;
    -not paying the household charge
-running your wagon on the green
-replacing your tax disc with a beer mat

Sure you might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb:D:D:D

(SMALL PRINT: I DO NOT ENDORSE OR CONDONE, NOR CONDEMN ANY OF THE ABOVE;))

What started out like this -

CZ 22lr Style with Nikko Nighteater 8-32x60 scope
    CZStyle22lrsideon.jpg

    Went to this

CZ 22lr Style Custom stock with Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 scope
    CZStylewithnewstock2.jpg

    Ended up like this

CZ 22lr Varmint same Custom stock and Bushnell Elite 3200 10x40 scope

    CZvarmint1.jpg

All now sold to fund this (should'a kept that varmint)
